The opening was rough and it made me furious. My brother was murdered. I can tell you that what the families of those two girls are going through to this day should never happen to anyone. Evil absolutely exists. I hope to God I have what it takes to handle it when it comes my time. I will root it out and set it right so no one in my family need experience it again. Damn, he’s really not trying to let echo have this. I agree that his upbringing created the base for what he would eventually become. He still made the choices he made, and echo gets that, but he would’ve been a lot less likely to make those choices had he been raised differently. Echo isn’t trying to excuse anything, and seeing it the way he does is a lot of the reason that we have laws to protect children from neglect and abuse, to give them a fair chance at being a balanced person.

My mothers maiden name is "Panzram" ultra rare name BTW. I am distance relative of Carl, true story. The name is Prussisn, our ancestors moved to Australia and the USA at the end of the 1800s. My grandfather who's last name is Panzram is probably the most ethical man anyone could be unbelievable nice went to church every Sunday etc Two extremes same name, with some shared DNA. Feel strange for me to think about this.

I think that what Echo is trying to say is that cause and responsibility are two different things. From a personal perspective, it's extremely important to take responsibility for your actions. But for society as a whole, it's more useful to look into what causes a criminal to be like this, because this knowledge can actually be used to reduce crime rates. In other words, even though criminals are 100% responsible for their actions, preventing people from becoming criminals in the first place is more beneficial for society than imprisoning them after they commit the crimes, regardless of who's fault it is.

Nailed it. Too bad Jocko wouldn't give Echo a fair shake on a valid point. Ironically, Jocko, just a minute or two later, pointed to how people can make a difference by treating others well. In other words, he ended up agreeing with Echo, though I'm not sure he knew it at that moment. Echo also didn't do a great job articulating his point.

I love how theatrical these podcasts are. Like the lighting is harsh, it’s colorless, the mic sensitivity is through the roof, Jocko doesn’t smile, he speaks calmly and low, he pauses for dramatic effect and then speaks quickly.

That was a rough video to listen to at the beginning of the new year but serves as a reminder to keep your guard up and be prepared, because evil can take many forms. Evil can start with just a thought if you let that seed sprout. I loved the discussion about the red light and the green light. I think it's useful to be action-oriented and when you see, green just go without admiring too long what beautiful shade of green it is. I could sense it on Jocko when he read the book, what kind of action he would take against the evil in those stories. Jordan Peterson had a video, where he said that the Bible translation of the meek shall inherit the earth is inaccurate. Instead, the true translation is: "People who know how to use the sword and decide to keep it in its sheath, will inherit the earth." Happy New Year to both of you!!! Congratulations on finishing your book on time. I'm looking forward to reading it with my kids.

The beginning story really hit me.. It's important to know this type of evil is out here, it makes no sense to try and hide from or forget the horrors of mankind. But man, I get too emotional when talking about this to others.. I just get too angry. I can listen to it, I can read about it but when I try to discuss this type of topic it feels too difficult. I have been getting better at taking ownership and using that ownership to solve problems in my relationships (work, marriage, etc.), but I took a stumble this morning. My wife washed the coffee pot and put it back together yesterday. We have a little Black and Decker pot that I programmed to make 2 cups at 0500 every morning. When assembling the coffee pot, however, she neglected to put the plastic cap on the glass pot. My morning coffee is now all over the counter, the water reservoir is full of wet grounds. So I spent my breakfast time cleaning the whole pot and counter. I opened the bedroom door, woke her up and said, "You ruined my coffee."

Back to the "cause and effect" debate. Imagine you have a line of dominoes set up. If someone else knocks your dominoes down thats not your fault but at that point it is your responsibility to stop the chain reaction.

Regarding their debate on nature vs nurture... Echo and Jocko are both correct. In my opinion, Echo just was not expressing what I feel he was trying to say (which can be found at 1:10:46 - 1:11:12) To Echo's point: Parenting has an incredible impact on kids, as such being able to curve theirs kids into certain mindsets and styles of living (mostly). This is the "cause and effect" he kept mentioning. To Jocko's point: No matter the upbringing, everyone has a choice as to how they live and act. Blaming other people for your life choices is foolish. So they are both right haha

Just like jocko, i for the most part disagree with echos point. While it's true parenting has a big impact, it's only up to a certain age. It then significantly shifts to peers and teachers. Once they have good and bad influences, it's on them no matter how the parents are.

So no shit there I was....Iraq in the Al Anbar Province in 2003. It was the beginning of June. All has been relatively quiet up to this point. I’m in the 3rd ACR, and we arrived ready to battle the Republican Guard’s elite tank battalions. That was not to be thanks to 10th SFG(A) and a crap ton of B-52, Fast Movers, and other air strikes. I digress. So here we are in the lull before violence started an uptick. Doing a presence patrol in order to keep the peace. About halfway through this patrol I saw him. We locked eyes through the crowd. He was back from the main body of the locals who came out to glimpse the American Troops there to liberate them from the previous oppressive regime. The eyes were lifeless black orbs. The beard thick and black as pitch. His gaze did not falter, nor did he flinch at our meager show of force. He was there to see his enemy. To get a measure of those he was destine to kill. For the rest of my days I will remember that face. Those eyes. The hatred. One week later we got into our first TIC. My friend and mentor was killed that night, and I was wounded slightly. That day I peered into the face of evil. It reinforced my beliefs in God, Country, and the American values.

Clint Emerson has also served in the US Navy SEALS. He is right about being prepared for dangerous, emergency situations that can catch you by surprise. He has seen a lot and explains that by being aware and taking control, having and setting boundaries and making wise choices is a good, healthy, wise decision that allows people to have disipline which allows them to gain more freedom. His advice is helpful, prevents problems from happening and saves lives. That is a blessing!

The discussion/debate Echo and Jocko are having in the second half of the podcast can be clarified by Stephen Covey in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. There is an important difference between someone/something influencing us and someone/something determining us/choices. Panzram, like all people, was powerfully influenced by his parents and early years, but he was not determine/fated/predestined to commit those crimes because of his parents or experiences. That was a choice for which he is responsible.

Panzram was a straight narcissist. Victim of his own life. He suffered for his terrible decisions and inflicted that suffering on others.. I don't even think he was a psycho/sociopath just a bitter bastard who thought the world owed him something. The head trauma he sustained as a child probably didn't help either tbf..🤔 I read the book years ago, but just found this pc. 👍 Jocko for President 💪❤️

Carl Panzram was a monster but as much as any violent criminal he was a monster of the worlds making. When he was very young he was the victim of a botched ear operation (performed at home) which permanently damaged the parts of his brain responsible for the regulation of anger and impulse control. This surely played a substantial role in his delinquency, which resulted in his placement in a juvenile facility where he and other boys were subject to horrendous and repeated physical and sexual abuse. Throughout his life he would suffer unbelievable brutalization in prison which he then meted out to others. What he did was evil and by the time he was an adult there was no good left in him, but he was a product of the evils of his time, and a manifestation of them
