There is a philosophy called stoicism that relates to a lot of what Jocko talks about! The main 3 Stoics were Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus. They have very inspirational books that I highly recommend. You can use stoicism even in modern day life! I’m still fairly new to it, but it’s changed me greatly.

I'm with echo regarding the 12 minute 'excerpt'. I like them at that length. It's not too long and not too short. It's long enough to hear the thorough explanations. And also, I enjoy the little banter in between. It's like a mini Jocko Podcast, minus the 2 hours.

Personally I feel that the rule of war that was " Unless you want disorder, have your soldiers do what they're trained to do", I don't think it was meant in that narrow if a sense. A swordsman back then would also be trained in the use of a spear, and possibly bow or gun. I think it's more like asking a platoon of infantrymen to all of a sudden take over command on all logistical operations during a campaign. Or making them do something they aren't well trained in like manning a howitzer. All soldiers I'll m history to today are expected to adapt to battlefield conditions, but do not make them do something that soldiers don't do essentially.

Jocko, since you have Dichotomy of Leadership as a supplement to Extreme Ownership, how about a Q&A book as a supplement to the Field Manual? I think you both mentioned putting it up on the website. It would be tremendous to have a Jocko black and white/succinct manual for leadership and followership problems!

There is no surer sign of decay in a country than to see the rites of religion held in contempt.- Nicolo Machiavelli
@sethbracken
@sethbracken 5 жыл бұрын
The context is important though. Later in that same chapter he says it’s the priesthood of the Catholic Church’s fault that Italy is such a mess. The preists set such a bad example that all the people in the whole country have become wicked and irreligious (meaning they’ll be damned), and the bad example keeps Italy disunified and weak (which is even worse than going to hell, LOL). NM’s observation of decay is both proof of the decay, AND accelerates it by sharing the observation with readers.
@highconfessornicodemus1613
@highconfessornicodemus1613 5 жыл бұрын
The quote is the context for chapter 12 of titus livius. His chief complaint against the church of that time it's that their infighting and their failings harm the Faith and cause strife within the nation. As NM points out, those that conspire against or bring contempt to faith should be admonished, especially if it is a member or body of the clergy.

Sir Isaac Brock The fact that something as simple as putting "in God we trust" on money can unify a nation suggests that the nation holds a high regard for Christian values. It also suggests that Machiavelli's quote is right. As a weakening of the common faith would cause disunity within the nation.

Sir Isaac Brock Very serious, whether you believe or not, His story is an amazing example of extreme ownership. Using Jocko's lens of Extreme Ownership, Discipline, and recognizong the Dichotomy inherent to most of life, is of value to soldiers, businessmen, politicians and even the faithful. Churches require good leadership as much as any other community or orginization.
@highconfessornicodemus1613
@highconfessornicodemus1613 5 жыл бұрын
Sir Isaac Brock One example is that Christ, although innocent, chose to take the sins of the world upon Himself so that the rest of humanity could be saved. This is not dissimilar to when Jocko talks about a leader needing to take ownership of any mistake made by the team. so that the entire team or company can succeed on future ventures or missions. As the leader will ensure that they are properly equipped and educated to deal with the situation. Another example is to compare Jocko's methods of leadership with the way that Christ interacts with His disciples.
@highconfessornicodemus1613
@highconfessornicodemus1613 5 жыл бұрын
Sir Isaac Brock Those are all great points. They are a perfect example of the Dichotomy inherant within God the Father He is alpha and omega, beginning and ender of the universe, sole creator and sole solution. As a parent, if you allow your children to remain in a perfect and safe environment they are inevitably going to be naive. The only solution is to guide them as best you can and allow them to find the knowledge of good and evil on their own, warning them against it yet knowing they will inevitably taste it. Even knowing full well that your child would trespass before hand, when they do transgress you must discipline them. I am glad that God did not create a perfect world with perfectly obedient creatures, perhaps it is something akin to the struggle of sisyphus. The world would be boring without any work to do. Also if you were the writer of all creation would you write a story with no conflict?

Official KZbin Commentator Edit: the fellow "official KZbin Commentator" had left a question asking me why I try so hard, even though most people dont want to hear someone preaching. This was my response. I am going to leave it up, although I do not know why he deleted his question. 2 Timothy 4.2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. I preach because it is what God has called us to do in this age. I have had the chance to speak to every kind and persuasion of people from all over the world. I have seen miracles, and I have seen people's lives turned around by prayer. Christ went out of his way to save me when I am the least deserving. How evil would I have to be to have freely received this salvation and not try to share it?
