Agreed! And since Jocko had on an actor like Gary Sinise, I'd love to see Jocko get Oliver Stone, Dale Dye and Rob Riggle on the podcast ( they've all served in the military and Jocko did say that he's been trying to get Dale Dye on the podcast, so I really hope that that happens because that would be such an amazing interview).

When I was deployed my parents were at a charity gala and Gary Sinise was there, someone had said that my parents had a son deployed and he took a picture with my parents; they (my parents) sent it to me in Iraq. We all watched the news and saw support for the war falling in 05, it was a great morale booster for me and my buddies that people cared. I really appreciated it and I have always been a big fan of Gary and always will be.

I understand why Mr Sinise didn't want to broach the alcoholism topic, but I'm happy Jocko ploughed into it anyway and even more glad Sinise relented and opened up. Even though he didn't want to discuss his wife's personal problems on air, he also wrote about that topic for a reason: his family's struggles are the struggles of countless others. Being sensitive to others' privacy is important, but sometimes it's even more important to share stories like this to give hope, comfort, and inspiration to others (oh look, 3:04:00). For me, it was one of the most deeply moving parts of the episode. Thanks for being vulnerable Gary!
@unitedstatesofamerica9948
@unitedstatesofamerica9948 3 жыл бұрын
Gary would've rather not gone in as much detail, and it was not Jocko to decide for Gary to be vulnerable and go in depth beyond his comfort for others' benefit - it should have been Gary's say completely. Jocko messed up in terms of social intelligence when it came to that.

Sounds familiar in my family. We traced our dad's side and every male served in some war beginning with the Tennessee militia in Lincoln's war. Dad was in Vietnam (died after 15 yrs of agent orange slowly killing him off) and he never spoke of his time there. Didn't even want to teach us to shoot. We learned on our own when we grew up. I wasn't till after he died that we saw photos from his time there. Only knew he was a Navy Corpsman and the officers loved him because he was a tremendous golfer (he was on the mini tour in Florida) … he was looking to put us in OTC when a threat of the draft came up but then pulled us saying "we fought in enough wars". My favorite job was working for Upstate Warriors for a few months (I couldn't live off the paycheck) and going into the prison to help the vets who were in there. We kept it small. County money to support those in our county in South Carolina

I noticed that, too but also in fairness, he DID put it in the book, right? If he didn't want to talk about it, that's certainly his right not to and if he didn't want Jocko to read the chapter, that's also his right but I think that people reading the chapter about Moira's alcohol problem is fair game if he already WROTE about it in a chapter in his book in the first place. He didn't have to talk about his wife's problem with alcoholism in the book but he did, so I think Jocko reading the chapter is still fair. Jocko missed the cues Gary was giving but again, if you don't want to talk about something or hear about it in an interview then maybe don't write about it in a book where everyone can read about it to begin with.
