Despite being four years late, these first ten podcasts have had significant relevance to my current life because they are about timeless advice applicable to any situation.

Great Podcast as Always, The Mortar Shells & Fragments are the most horrible, just hearing the sound of mortar shell as it hits the cement surface, & that hot air blast of detonation, sends the chills to my spine . As I had to endure these mortar shellings in Sarajevo Bosnia 92-95 while I was 12 years old . It stays with you forever & you never forget it.

At around 2:19:20 and quiet often during various podcasts, Jocko talks about the importance of knowing what is and what is not in our control and if it s the later, how important it is to embrace it. There is a quote I ve known and repeated to myself very often since I was 12 y/o, it s from Napoleon and goes : "Ce que je ne peux éviter, il me faut l'embrasser" meaning "What I can't avoid, I have to embrace"... Thanks for yet another great podcast 🙌🙏!

This podcast is turning my life around. As a new (and young) leader I no longer go to work second guessing myself, now I confront adversity with a smile and saying GOOD. My confidence has increased, and I've been using the "no fucking slack" motto on myself and my guys, though I still need to find my own phrase until then I will borrow this one.

I was a mortarman in the US Marines for 4 years. One of our mantras was "Steel Rain, Steel Pain". Mortars are one of the most technical and intellectual systems to operate and can be absolutely devastating to whoever is on the receiving end, as Jocko pointed out in this episode. The camaraderie and teamwork of a well-trained and highly disciplined platoon of Marine mortarmen cannot be overstated. We reveled in the psychological and emotional effect we had on the enemy bc if the mortars didn't kill you, they would sap every ounce of your will to continue fighting. Either way, you're done. Mortarmen are brutal, intelligent and hard-pressing warriors, and I was fortunate and privileged enough to serve with some of the best. Semper Fi, Do or Die!!! 🤟🤟

For anyone looking to seriously train in the types of padding & protective gear Jocko mentions around 1:18:00 or so, Tony Blauer makes his "SPEAR" suit. Having used these while in the Army, I can personally attest that they allow fighters to go full-bore on each other. $3000 per suit isn't cheap, but if that investment allows you to prepare and achieve the sort of conditioning which allows you, your battle buddies, or your officers/agents to survive in the heat of the moment, I'd say it's worthwhile. It's also a damn sight less expensive than a funeral.

I remember Pearl Harbor day. In addition to the attack on the US, it is my step father's birthday. He was born December 7th, 1941. His father fought in the pacific theater and was one of the first Americans to go into Hiroshima after the nuclear bomb was dropped. It changed him forever. He rarely talked about it but one night when we boys were just shy of young men he did. His stories, while edited for our youth were not dissimilar to those in the book. As a grown man, I know his reality in the Pacific was exactly the same as described herein.

In the practice of his task, the commander must keep in close touch with all subordinate units by means of personal visits and observation; it is essential that he know from personal contact the mental, moral, and physical state of his troops, the conditions with which they are confronted, their accomplishments, their desires, their needs, and their views, and that he promptly extend recognition for services well done, extend help where help is needed and give encouragement in adversity, but never hesitate to exact whatever effort is necessary to attain the desired end. Considerate and devoted to those whom he commands, he should be faithful and loyal to those who command him. -War Department

"Whilst men are linked together, they easily and speedily communicate the alarm of any evil design. They are enabled to fathom it with common counsel, and to oppose it with united strength. Whereas, when they lie dispersed, without concert, order, or discipline, communication is uncertain, counsel difficult, and resistance impracticable. Where men are not acquainted with each other’s principles, nor experienced in each other’s talents, nor at all practised in their mutual habitudes and dispositions by joint efforts in business; no personal confidence, no friendship, no common interest, subsisting among them; it is evidently impossible that they can act a public part with uniformity, perseverance, or efficacy. In a connection, the most inconsiderable man, by adding to the weight of the whole, has his value, and his use; out of it, the greatest talents are wholly unserviceable to the public. No man, who is not inflamed by vain-glory into enthusiasm, can flatter himself that his single, unsupported, desultory, unsystematic endeavours, are of power to defeat the subtle designs and united cabals of ambitious citizens. When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle." Edmund Burke “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Meal prep for you and your child for the whole week, wake up at 4:30 AM go to sleep at 9 PM. move for cheaper cost-of-living get a job that allows you to be home before and after your child goes to school. That should help a lot if you’re not doing that already.
