I just finished watching “The Serpent” on Netflix, which is about a guy who murdered tourist traveling along the “hippie trail” in the 1970’s. So I started researching the hippie trail and traveling thru the Middle East was a popular thing to do back then and I agree, it’s wild to see westerners traveling so freely thru countries nowadays that are too dangerous

Levison Wood, back in early/mid 2000s, I found myself in Tehran. I remember walking through the Bazaar, and suddenly i saw another westerner. It was highly discouraged for us to be in Iran at that time. Anyway, he had a real worn and scruffy look, single day backpack. It most likely wasn't you back then, but god damn, if it was you - that would've been awesome. 😎

I just watched a documentary about the “Hippie Trail” because the mini series “The Serpent” on Netflix inspired me to look into it. Pretty crazy that westerners used to be able to freely travel through countries like Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It was also crazy to see just how little has changed in those middle eastern countries since the 1970’s.

I was an Australian soldier in Iraq (1991) and the British flew me and my mates from Salopi in Turkey, Salopi was on the border between Iraq and Turkey. We flew in on the British variant of the Chinook and the pilots flew the chinook like a roller coaster. I was very excited but sacred as shit. This was it, getting stuck in. Well the Chinook dropped quickly and the ramp went down and I ran out into a mix of fuel fumes and dust and into defensive positions. The noise was absolutely maddening but added to the thrill of the moment. The Chinook left as quickly as it landed and the sudden silence was strange. I managed to look over my shoulder as I lay prone with my kit falling to the side and into the back of my neck and saw the chopper as a small dot in the sky. The manic moments passed and there was no shooting, no ‘enemy’ and this was it. I was suddenly aware of a horrible sickening stench emanating from within me. I looked down and found that my chest and webbing had squashed into a pile of human shit. How did I know it was human shit? The stench! The odour was revolting and the shit was baked into a crusty cake by the heat covering the outer crusty shell cracked by my body. All the soggy yellowish and brown moist stinky shit covered my webbing and the front of my field cams. Day one!

Canadian here. I was backpacking for a few years about the same time as this gent; but I played it safe and went to places like Honduras, Guatemala, and Colombia. No shooting wars on when I was there... I have to say, backpacking was absolutely one of the best experiences I have ever had. Plenty of wild times. Lots of Canadians, Brits, Swedes, Norse and other Europeans in hostels all over the place, but I can count the number of Yanks I've met properly traveling with a day pack and grit on my thumbs. Just not a thing that Americans think to do, for whatever reason.
