I realize this is wayyy late (I've been catching up, podcast by podcast, since late 2016), but just in case anyone curious about history reads this: The Admiral states that not even the Roman legions relied on professional troops that would serve for decades. He's only right as far as the first century BC. After that, as Rome violently transitioned from an overstretched Republic to an official Empire (plenty of warning for us there, btw), it revolutionized its military. The Legions were transformed into a permanent professional force that drew its infantry from the poor classes and had a minimum 25 year term of service. Roman soldiers were basically deployed until they died or earned that 25 year retirement. This was the Army that anchored civilization for the next 4 centuries and beyond. Other than that, great podcast by two incredibly high-achieving leaders! Thank you, Jocko and Admiral McRaven!

This made me think of one of the best examples of leadership I ever saw while in the Army. I was assigned patient security detail on a cas-e-vac. I was initially told by my command I would make a round trip and be back at my base that night. Of course that's not what happened and I was dropped off at Ballad at 0300 hours. After a few hours sleep and not being a hundred percent sure where I was I discovered I would be there several days. I headed to the PX to pickup a set of pts and came across a major. I greeted him with good morning sir but no salute because we did not salute on my base and I had not been briefed on customs and courtesy's there. The major began to chew me alive. A Sergeant first class stepped in and vouged that I had just landed on the base and received no briefing. I had not met that NCO but he stuck up for me. Left a great impression.

My biggest issue in SOF and it’s every organization I’ve met hundreds of guys that had the same issues. The prescription drugs and alcohol and 20yrs of war TBI/PTSD. Have to be taken into account. Our guys have been physically and mentally abused for 20yrs. the leadership allowed z-drugs like ambien and stimulants like Nuvigel/adderall to be dispensed like crazy. Which then alters chemicals in the brain that leads to anxiety/depression. Then they wonder why guys ended up with “Behavioral problems” problems. Btw we learned this lesson once in Vietnam. Alcohol weakens the lining of the brain so your a lot more susceptible to TBI etc. --- but before people go judging especially older officers who were at the 0-6 level on 9/11. They don’t have any idea what it’s like being at war 20yrs being in the 0-1 - 0-4 ranks or E1-E7/8. You gotta look from the context our guys had poor leadership and guidance allowing the alcohol and prescription drug use which then led to serious issues. I can’t even count how many operators I know that were addicted to Opioids, benzodiazepines, z-drugs, & stimulants. All which the commands allowed. Understand the avg door kicker is between 19-26 or so. Just think back to when you were between that age range and having a command make the prescription drug use acceptable. Now we have record veteran suicide stats which goes to show. The issues are much deeper than a random guy just wanting to do wrong for the fun of it. People need to take responsibility for what they did to contribute to the destructive culture. Instead of blaming the young guy that had ambien shoved down his throat at 19yrs old. I mean 19! At 19 you don’t know anything.

1:33:33 he's talking about plans they made against the Tirpitz. The real story is the Prinz Eugen. She was never sank during World War II. Then when she was confiscated by The Americans after the war, she was part of the fleet that was hit twice with nuclear bombs. Even after being nuked twice she still didn't sink and she had to be purposefully scuttled off an atoll in the Pacific Ocean where she still sits keel up to thi day. That ship was so complex that they had to have a German crew sail it back to the United States along with some U S sailors. Then when the German Sailors were sent back home the American Sailors couldn't keep her running. So they towed her out in the middle of the ocean to nuke her twice then they had to tow her again to the atoll where she was finally scuttled.

I've been listening to and enjoying Jocko since beginning of the year. To some extent the conversations reinforce certain impressions I have of myself... "I certainly do that good thing", "I definitely don't do that bad thing", but doesn't this episode open with the Unilateral Flanking Move 0:55. Hmmm, I've done that, it's bad? Oh boy, right out of the gate I better pay attention! Luckily podcast moves on to some more comfortable territory - Long Green Table, Death Before Dishonor, Respect, Leadership/Followership - and I'm back to feeling pretty good about myself when we get to the Paper Towel Dilemma 2:00:36. Damn, I have a paper towel dilemma, and I have completely mismanaged it! Moved right into the value of Inspection 02:03:48 - it's possible I uttered the phase "we're all professionals here." last month - that landed too close to home. Lots of respect to Admiral McRaven and Jocko. One concern is all contrarians listening to this will think they're Billy Mitchell. All-in-all, this one is worth listening to beginning to end - the Jocko/Echo dialog at the end is priceless. Tell your friends and get the book!
