This tourniquet subject matter blows my mind. As an Army Sapper in Bosnia '96 I had a cargo pocket stuffed with tourniquets. Removed blew up minefields for a year and thank God I never needed to use them but at least I had them. Doc even had the pneumatic trousers.

Tourniquets were a major staple of my gear as a 68W. Gladly everyone, regardless of MOS, was issued an IFAK which includes one when I was in. Never was I ever without a few extras. Our fellow medic tried his best. We can't save them all but, we can damn well try! Train how you fight.

Our corpsman used to give us tampons, safety scissors and enough 550 cord to make a 3-4 ft strap kinda like those bracelets and with a small carbiner or shackle on one end. Its a great tourniquet and easy to use. It takes less space in your pocket than a can of cope and the Rip-it you forgot you stole.

When they talk about walking through a building and knowing all the exits and doors as they go along it was reassuring to know I'm not the only one doing this and I'm not crazy or paranoid. I always do this, I've trained myself to be excellent at doing this after being in a fire in a building and having no idea how to get out and nearly dying in the smoke. I find myself preparing all the time, everywhere I go and it takes little effort.

My sister in law on 4days ago got into a4 wheeler accident and received a deep gash on her forearm to close to her elbow so I had to apply a makeshift tourniquet above the elbow using a tee shirt and metal rod. I learned this in a Combat Lifesaver class I took in Basic training. I was able to stop the blood loss. But it was the lady that allowed us to get into her car so she could take us to the hospital that saved her life! So many people just drove past us! Thank god the lady stopped!

Great discussion on mindset and situational awareness. I had a recent incidence of this at a local mall. Foot pursuit of an individual who ran by me and instead of being my usual aware self I had my head buried in my phone while waiting on a family member. It took me about 3-4 seconds to realize what was happening because I didn't seeing it coming by being aware of my surroundings. You can have all of the training in the world but if you are not situationally aware you will wind up behind the curve. Can't wait for the book.

I’m a big proponent of barefoot training. Moving through rough terrain barefoot is big part of the advanced MovNat training I do and teach. Not that I won’t wear (minimalist) shoes, but I have the capability to move without them in case the situation ever arises. Just another skill to have. 💪🏼👣

Interesting. I've never formally trained that way, but even as a kid I'd make it a point to walk barefoot on hot asphalt, concrete, gravel, and other rough surfaces until my soles were toughened up. I was poor growing up and knew that I wouldn't be getting new shoes very often, so I did it to be able to go anywhere without shoes, even on asphalt on a 100+ degree day.

I can only say that however the idea came into your head, understand that if you run a sliver or hunk of shrapnel, cactus, razor wire, broken glass, or sliver of wood into those feet, not only did you just take yourself out, you won't be able to hump your ruck and will be of no use to your team......yes team!

I served with 1st LT David Bernstein during this deployment with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. We came in the unit around the same time. We were in B Co 1/508 173rd Abn together. He was one of the best guys I’ve ever served with. I remember him joking with me in the gym in Kirkuk shortly before he died. One of the saddest days on that deployment when he passed away.

Great wisdom. There are always connections to be made between skills and live's many events in general. Anatomy can be applied, in principle, to the automobile, the computer, the hinge, etc. We often create things, whether intentionally or not, based on our understanding of the human body and it's many parts with their respective functions in relation to each other. This is part of an ancient body of wisdom passed down for millenia. "Know thyself" means a whole lot more than before, you know? I find that amazing.

If you actually look at the specifics of the situation, specifics that Mike showed on his own podcast, they never labeled him a domestic terrorist, and Mike dramatically misrepresented the situation (and continues to do so). He's trying to manufacture outrage. They labeled American Contingency as having ties to MVE, which was accurate, because some of its members were targeting FBI agents homes and coordinating extremist activities together, and Mike himself actually reported these individuals to law enforcement. Mike himself was never named, nor did the FBI ever accuse him of domestic terrorism, publicly or privately. Mike has created this narrative and really run with it, and its just not accurate, not based on what he's shown us.

Last thing I saw from him a couple of days ago was about how he was homeschooling his boys and teaching them to operate as a 2-man fire team, because that was "the most important thing". As a dustoff medic in viet nam I used 2” white medical tape exclusively on traumatic amputations. It took about 5 seconds to go around a leg 2 or 3 times to stop bleeding. IV’s we’re done with 14 or 16 gauge jelco needles with dextrose d5w bottles turned wide open.

I always try to carry a tourniquet and I’m not even a soldier. It’s amazing how easy it is to bleed out. Anything from a gunshot wound, car accident to something as small as cutting through an artery while working on your car in the driveway. Second time listening to this podcast. Building resilience through going internal. I’ve gotten out of shape but last year, I was a few years out of the infantry and I would randomly pick up my kit and go running around the block. I’d stop at a certain point, gain my breath and start pushing again. The infantry taught me, NO ONE FEELS SORRY FOR YOU, DONT FEEL SORRY FOR YOURSELF. This is REAL LIFE. You gotta get yourself together. You need to push yourself as hard as possible and reflect on where you believe your limit is. My brother used to say “I know I could go back into the Marine Corps any day, because I’ve met my limit and I know where that line is”. I’ve gotten close to my breaking point so as I’m maneuvering, I’m going to maneuver slightly slower than my breaking point because getting to the fight isn’t the end of the mission, you have to fight and walk back. Thanks GySgt Cain. That quote broke the infantry wide open in less than 10 seconds for me.

Losing a soldier that our country invested millions in training over a $20 piece of cloth and a stick isn't just a tragedy, it's a symptom of just how far our country has fallen. We went from taking care of the small things (like making sure every medic had an adequate suppl of tourniquets) to trying to take care of huge things (like climate change) that we have no business interfering in. That being said, knowing that there's men like Mike and Jocko out there, trying to change the world for the better gives me hope that our country will be great again. America needs more men and women that think like the both of you.

A very educational podcast, loved it. Guys I have no idea how it is in the US, especially since unfortunately, the US is the country with mass shootings all the time, but I had an idea watching this. Why don't schools hire veterans especially the ones with special training, have one at least who is a permanent employee who is there in case of any disaster, especially a shooting and can also give a one week workshop to every class each year, the class can include al types of survival knowledge they have through their military training. Honestly it is a better use of their training than active duty.

Where they are talking about testing yourself is so true. You should always know what you can and can't do. I was always in pretty good shape because I was active. When I broke my back, neck, shoulder, ribs, breast plate, collarbone, knee, ankle and foot (motorcycle accident) I had several surgeries and found I lost the ability to do most things the way I had been doing them. Because of this I started to push myself to exercise and become much more physical again. Now I am turning 65 and I am finding that because of age I can't do as much as what I did only a few years ago. What neither of you have talked about is the need to adapt to physical changes and sometimes on the fly. I wanted to get back into karate, I realized I didn't have the same power I once did. I went to a school and saw things that looked fake, as people were throwing each other and using joint locks and gravity to subdue the attacker. What I was seeing looked like it had to be fake. I asked if they could show me a few things so I could see how this actually worked. They didn't take me to the point of the throw but to the point where I was off balance and they could complete the technique with literally no effort. The joint locks were also required very little effort to inflict severe pain (and damage) if necessary. The key is timing not strength. Jiujutsu and Hapkido are the two styles I study now. I am only 5'7" I have learned how to be able to throw a man 6'2" weighing 260 pounds with literally no real effort on my part. Being ready and practicing is the key to being able to defend yourself. I don't think the things I used in Kyokushin Kai Kan Karate would serve me nearly as well today as it did years ago. Prior to starting this class I had major rotator cuff repairs done on three of the muscles, one of which was severed. I couldn't do a single push up when I start class but now I am up to 30. At my age if I don't use it I know I will lose it. Many people my age cannot do half of what I can do physically. I am not bragging here. I am saying I don't want to be a target. Bad guys always look for someone weaker than them to attack. The exercise I get and the practice have given me enough confidence to know that I at least have a chance to defend myself enough to get away. I am also fortunate enough to have a school where a Sensei and another student were both inducted into the International martial arts hall of fame. The main thing I have learned through these physical problems is to keep moving forward both physically and mentally to keep from going backwards.gth. Jiujutsu and Hapkido are the two styles I study now. I am only 5'7" I have learned how to over the past 6 monthonths

Theres such a balance to being a man in my mind. the epitome of what it means to be a man is so much of what you say. Youre not mindless and sloppy. Well thought out and tight, not full of ego but full of pride. Pride in a way of life pride in family and friends and most importantly having pride in yourself, you have no choice but to hold yourself to a standard same with those around you. Its uplifting, you show a good example of character how to be humble and calm, take everything in stride and make shit work. Its so easy to get overwhelmed but when you've gotten it done before whats the worry.

The story of the tourniquet reminds me of the story of the emergency call in germany. Until the 1970s there were all different phone numbers, depending on the region. Then one father lost his son. The ambulance came to late because it was to late alarmed. Someone could not get the number quick enough. The father then lobbied for a unified number in whole germany. Today we have one emergency number in whole europe. Its 112. Take care, guys.

Last two times I wore flip flops outside I got into a fight with a dude in the hood and he wouldn't fight me in the grass, I kicked them off and went to kicking. Fractured both of his wrists but chewed an avocado worth of skin off of my foot(in the screets). More recently had to save my German Shephard from two attacking pitbulls. Pepper sprayed them three times and then slipped in it and speared myself in the inner thigh. I don't do flip flops no mo' lol. I served in Baghdad in '05. Those EFPs were no joke. Great show! (I'm a law abiding felon so I had to do what I had to do, a pointy stick spear like you fellas mentioned earlier. I wasn't even trying to kill the dogs but when that 6" blade got buried in my inner thigh i just knew i was going to bleed out and acted accordingly).

@Joey Marino He recovered physically ok but he was definitely traumatized from it. He had a big hole in his ear where it met the top of his head and some bruises on his neck. He thought they were playing with him because he plays with pit bulls 2 of which look almost identical to the dogs that attacked him. Side note dogs apparently don't give a shit about pepper or bear spray. After I exhausted those options and saw both dogs on his neck at the same time that's when it clicked in my head that I had to stop it (this was before I poked myself).

My mother was a nurse. I remember being told as a kid in the eighties and even much later. Probably even up into the 2000's that you should only ever use a tourniquet as a last resort. That if you used one it was like automatic loss of that limb. I wonder how many people died as a result of that misguidance. Things that people did a long time ago are not always bad ideas. Tourniquets have been used forever. But people tend to always think the "old ways" are always some kind of dumb witch doctor stuff. Some of it may be. But I'd bet most of it was based in real experience.

So, on the topic of force on force training, and the limitations of sim training availability to the civilian market, would airsoft also be a viable option for civilians in training? How could civilians really successfully train these concepts regularly and effectively on their own without the logistical support it requires to be able to get sim rounds and equipment?
