All the people asking for guests, don't get me wrong I absolutely love the guests all are incredibly amazing, but the first reason that I subscribed was because of these types of episodes. Jocko reading and analyzing books of battle and struggle in the worst conditions ancient or modern. Some of the greatest stuff to come out on KZbin in my opinion.

1ST YESS As someone who is in the process of becoming a British Army Officer, I'm truly grateful for this awesome podcast and words of wisdom from you Jocko. It'd be nice to see some sort of training tips/advice for people joining the army; what exactly should be focused on - less on heavy lifting, more on cailsthenics? - tips on improving run times, or swimming, etc. etc.

The fight was lost a long time before the polish frontier and Napoleon new it. Orangized the retreat for the able bodied soldiers that he would need for France to survive and then left as fast as possible to conscript more men, everyone was out to get him and he knew it. His escape was more than justified.

In terms of casualties compared to the army, was this the biggest military disaster of all time ?
@halfstep44

In terms of percentage it was one of the worst large scale operations at least in modern times. I think only about 1,000 men returned to fighting form. Barbarossa wasn't close as a percent. You have to read a history of the Russian campaign to get a sense of what a disaster it was. The battles were brutal as was the cold. And the retreat into Vilnius was horrific esp once the Cossacks stormed in

Small correction but at 6:35 he talks about the soldier being from Germany. In reality Germany wasn’t a country yet and it is because of Napoleon that after he was defeated Germans started to think of themselves as German. Before that Germany was a used more as a descriptor of a area where people spoke German

Napoleon is the reason the French men are so short, reportedly. The story goes that he put everyone 6 foot and taller in the front lines to terrify the enemy. They were also the first to die. Hence, the French man is an average of 6 inches shorter than other men of European descent. Fun factoid.

What I don't understand is, if the men were in such darkness and hellish suffering to the point of being "half-wild" and cursing their parents and their own birth, why didn't they just all look at each other and say "Let's abandon this mission", I mean if they are out of their minds then why didn't they do that instinctually to survive? "Why are we even doing this? Because some psycho told us to? What the fuck. Let's stop." "Ah good idea."

They were loyal soldiers. The leadership, command and comradeship held them together. It was the Grande Armee. Without those qualities Jakob would not have lived to give this account. Discipline and determination. Something most people lack today. Discipline, determination and mutual support in absolute madness. A Moscow bum.

@@shredwarfare5446 I’m just looking at this from a military perspective. The army was nearly wiped out completely several times. There was still a disciplined fighting force to the very end, both in the rear and vanguard units. Obviously discipline broke down but not in its entirety. If it had, and there had been a complete breakdown of the command and control, the survivors would of been completely annihilated. So, you have to give credit to those that held it together. Even those that were no longer fighting fit, you have to feel for them. The human suffering that they went through just to survive is something in itself. If everyone just went awol hundreds of miles inside enemy territory it would of been the end of the army. So at least they held some fighting discipline to allow for the retreat out of Russia. I just feel for what the common solider must of had to endure, fighting fit or not.
