We had to write a 5 year, 10 year, and 20-year plan for our senior year English class. Little did I know, it was instrumental in the life choices I made years later. I answered the goals subconsciously when I was 18. Now, 12 years later, I consciously kept my 5 year and 10 year goals and am working towards my 20 year goals.

One of the five and 10-year planning techniques I have developed for myself is based on hindsight. I know exactly what decisions and things I should have been doing five or ten years ago. So I try and project into the future, and come up with an answer to the question: Five or ten years from, what am I going to wish I had done right now? And then I do that thing.

How about not joining the military so that the politicians can't send you to other countries to invade and make worse. Examples include pretty much every conflict we have been in since WW2. There is no more draft so in the name of "EXTEREME OWNERSHIP" shouldn't Jocko and everyone else who volunteered to be in the military and go to Iraq which was an illgal war, but what evs because you have ZERO responsibility as a solider because you follow a chain of command. The biggest problem I see with this is life itself. Survival plays a role. When needs are not met, priorities shift. The points made in this video still stand, yet it is not as easy as it sounds. Never forget who you are and what you want outta life, or time itself will make you forget about everything you truly care about.

By all means do all you can at maximal intent if you feel that you want something. Though I feel that if you simply observe how the things around you are being done, you can imply some of those, sometimes in opposition or in variance to how you saw it being done, towards your mentality in pursuit of your goals. Notice that I said observe, not dabbling or getting sucked into it. Reading or getting a mentor can also be an option. But when resources are relatively scarce, I believe that this isn't such a bad alternative. This takes time and a lot of mental processing. Keep your vision peripheral. But your scope of focus can be toggled if need be. Reprimand with fixation but let your mind still feel the pulse of the entirety.

All those 14-24 year olds out there who are doing a 5-10 year plan here is some wisdom I have earned, Don't join the military-industrial complex. Jocko makes it seem like all the sacrifice that his guests endured were all for good, but the truth is it is not. Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Lybia, Afghanistan, etc..... all those wars were not about "Freedom", they are about empire. War is a racket, at least Jocko did read that book. But what does that make us who served in the military? GW Bush said "The best defense is a good offense" when speaking about the "War on Terror" (Waiting for the Jocko episode where he explains how to go to war on a tactic) . Doesn't that make us the OFFENDER? Stop the propaganda flag waving freedom BS, the military is a scam plain and simple. If you practice "EXTREME OWNERSHIP" than EVERYONE who served in somewhat responsible for all the death and destruction we have caused the world.

I’m stuck in a terrible mindset that I failed my kids. I know in the grand scheme of things I’m a good father but I had my kids young.. I wasn’t prepared financially and my kids have watched me struggle while we lived paycheck to paycheck. My 5 year plan that I have written down this year will leave my kids at 19, 14, and 9. I should have already owned a house for them to grow up in. They should not have seen their father struggle with bills living paycheck to paycheck. My kids should have experienced Disney land and vacations. I wish when I got out of the Army I had a 5 year plan. I got complacent. It won’t happen again but I wish I figured out when my kids were younger so I could have given them the life they deserve.

5 year plans are good in the Complicated. The Complex is a different domain. Jocko is usually looking in Complex. See Dave Snowden Cynefin. Broad goals, meaning common understanding of intent, meaning John Boyd. Mission Command, Destruction & Creation, OODA.

Five year plans are good for frameworks. A framework allows for adjustments as necessary. IOWs, "follow these steps exactly" does not work IRL. People need functional brains and reasoning abilities to execute. We currently have an over-reliance on "detailing every step" in an attempt to eliminate the NEED to REASON. We see how that worked out, POORLY. 10-15 years ago it was "there's an app for that" pushes that saturated the market with incomplete apps, but overinflated people's confidence in the market.

My stress and life fulfillment increased substantially once I started managing myself like a business. You need to set expectations, boundaries and manage your relationships to get what you want. A lot of stress comes from over committing or going along with others when its not really what you want. When you invest in yourself and become valuable you get that confidence to assert yourself.
