This is completely true. I joined the Army at 34 years old and it can be frustrating. I joined as an E-3 (because I had 90 college credit hours but wasn't quite done with my Bachelor's Degree) and an Officer Candidate. Everyone at Basic over 30 was highly annoyed with the, 'kids,' and some of the dumb stuff you had to do. However, it was nice to have the maturity and ability to not freak out about things that younger people would get upset about. (Lots and lots of drama in the female barracks) Me and one other guy in Basic were the oldest recruits out of 200 people and now that I'm in the TN National Guard OCS, I am the oldest in my class. Unfortunately PT is more troubling for me than the others, older bones/joints, takes longer to get in shape, etc. but everything else is about the same since this group is more mature, educated, etc. I say go for it if you want to serve! I joined as a Wife and Mom of an 11 year old daughter and while its extremely challenging, its equally rewarding.

Joined the Army Reserves at 36 and Jocko is right on the money here. I’m a high school teacher so I get along well with these kids who developed into soldiers alongside me. They call me “Teach”, “Pops”, or “Old Man” and have shown nothing but respect for me. Some say I inspire them to do better because they can’t let an old guy beat them at anything and it makes them push harder. Many of the things in BCT and AIT didn’t make sense to us but I would tell the guys to trust the process and be patient and positive. Be better than yesterday. I think it helped them and it helped me knowing that I was helping them.

@@zachdempsey5796 BMT flew by. It was hard being away from them, but they keep you so busy there that it kind of takes your mind off of them. My wife sent me a few letters while I was there, and i wrote some back. That helped. She was also very supportive of me joining, and also had her mom available to help while I was gone. I don't know if it would have been as easy without that additional help. I am still in tech school, as my job has one of the longest tech schools. I graduated BMT Jan. 23, so it had definitely been a long tech school. Still have about 6months left. It had been a good decision for me and my family so far. The medical insurance has been a godsend as well. Once I get operational around November of this year, I will be able to see how a normal life in the military will be. As for advice, I would say make sure you have a good support system from your spouse and ensure that you both know what changes will come, and even for the changes that you can't anticipate, be willing to work through them together. It helped that my wife and I had been married for 7 years before I joined. That support for each other had already been established. I joined the army when I was 30 in 2003 (MOS 11B1P). Basic training, AIT, and Airborne school (too easy). I loved the physical aspect of BT and AIT (PT, ruck marches, MOUT, shooting guns, being outdors, etc.), but what I hated, was being on lock down and standing around in formation, waiting for the drill sergeants (hurry up and wait). I started in a LEG infantry unit; after that, I went to a RSTA unit; and, I ended my time with the army, in a LRS unit. I did a few deployments in Iraq and went to a few schools. I decided to get out in 2012; because, I wanted to do the civilian thing again, due to the stupid shit and bad leadership. All said and done, though, I would do it all over again. And, I would highly recommend it for most people, despite the bad that goes along with it, regardless of your age. You get paid training with whatever MOS/career you choose (most of the military members aren't bullet magnets), career experience, leadership experience, travel opportunities, a brotherhood like no other, etc. Good times!

I'm a big fan of comics and science-fiction and when I heard President Trump's speech about creating a ''Space Force'',for several reasons I found it to be hilarious. One, it sounded like the name of a comic book or a sitcom or something out of a movie or video game(and I guess the U.S. Colonial Marines from James Cameron's Aliens, the Starship Troopers from the book and movie of the same name and the characters from the Halo video games, are all essentially a ''Space Force'' as are the Nova Corps from Marvel Comics and the Green Lantern Corps from DC Comics). Two, who would pay for Space Force? And three, it will never happen because as Lawrence O'Donnell commented on Bill Maher's show ''Real Time'' on HBO, it will never happen because it isn't up to The President. It's actually up to congress because they have to vote on it. And anyway, The United States Air Force ALREADY has the Air Force Space Command-admittedly, not quite a ''Space Force'', though.

When I joined the Marines I was 20 turned 21 in Bootcamp. I was making 25 and hour in 04 in union as steelworker. Reading the Philly Metro paper at lunch seeing insurgency picking up. I thought war was over. Then was like this is the new world forever, I signed up hot 119 GT score on ASVAP and wanted combat ASAP so Marines are 1st to fight so thats what I went with. I did not know all the SOCOM stuff. Turned 21 in bootcamp. Had a carear and my experiences in Frankford HS where our famous students are Drug Kingpins who firebombed houses.. Kaboni Savage. The stuff I was into was another reason to go. I had so much more street smarts. I hunted upstate and stayed in ocean in summer. I was all city swimmer which saved me a few times surfing as a kid. So I had alot of experience from every social background good and bad. I was NJPed in SOI for Tiajauna so lost Recon Indoc. Tiajauna was just a fun place. So in fleet I was good, well liked and Trusted. I hated toxic leadership. I was training for MARSOC but my NJP barred me. I did not want normal infantry anymore. We had majors writing thier own bronze stars with Vs without being in the TIC. So I left for Philly Fire Dept. I do wish I joined Army SF reserves though. I am 36 now and feel unfafilled with my military career. Toxic leaders pushed me out, the Corps has modernized better and allowing to get to higher level. I think USMC infantry should all be SOC capable Tier 3 unit. I am fighting alot of fire with alot of Vets in Busiest station in Philly with 1st in work, maybe the country also. Good money alot of time to train, travel and shoot. I have had my problems with getting back into civilian life. The world stops for nobody, losing alot of friends to PTSD and so on. I am blessed and continue to push. Crush life everyday.

This came up in my feed today. I had my 32nd birthday during initial officer training. I'd graduated university nearly a decade earlier, done post-grad, qualified as a professional, had a career then joined up. It was an interesting experience doing this with the kids who could be as young as 18. Physically some things were easier for me (typically endurance) and others harder (more impact stuff as I had another decade's worth of sports injuries and aging). Given my background the mental exercises were not a problem for me. However, exactly as you said, at that age you have to go in with the right attitude. I talked to friends who were already in service and went through that training with the view of this is a game that has to be played, some things will look dumb, but they are part of the game, play the game, get through and out the other side where the real service and the grownups are. Worked out pretty well and I made O5 in 10 years.

Oh and his Army job? Battery CO in Viet Nam. His father worked as an engineer for Combustion Engineering. I can tell you 20 years of .mil is worth it. 20 active is great. 20 years reserve is OK, but the check does not hit the bank until you turn 60.

I'm a poor 26 year old. Mind has been shifting towards the military more and more now. Thinking about the airforce. Still not sure though. Learning how to program right now, and while the pay off with that is potentially huge, there were plenty of times in the past where I went out to get a job. I put in 300 applications in the first year before I gave up and found a basic retail job, after I had gotten my bachelors in History. So now I'm going back to school hoping to change all that. Getting an associates/certificate in programming, but may need a bachelors for a specialized degree... and the only way I can pay for that and not be entrenched in debt is by joining an ROTC program.

Ringo SP I enlisted in army on active duty at age 34 and had my 35th birthday in basic. I'm glad I did join the military but at the same time I wish I had gone about it a different way. I'd recommend anyone who's older to either enlist in the air force (among other things, the air force is said to be more mature than the army plus a lot of the young punks you'll see in the army you wouldn't deal with in the air force to the same degree), or come in as an officer instead of enlisting, or try to make sure you get a really good job that is transferable to civilian (you may be in fantastic shape but enlisting in a mos like infantry at your age and then having to mow lawns is way underneath you at your age). Also don't wait way too late. By the time my recruiter was done with me, even though I had a high ASVAB score, there were only a very small number of mos choices I could make and I had to end up settling for a MOS that isn't so good.

I joined the Navy at age 35. They treat like I'm 17. I'm not allowed to go anywhere unless I'm accompanied by a 19yr old. I've owned property, lived on my own, worked. It's extremely demeaning and lowers a person's self worth and self esteem to conform them to a younger person's rules and age standards by belittling the older one based on rank not by age. I really just want to leave base to go train in BJJ but I'm not allowed to leave even for educational school purposes and none of the younger group wants to train. They all want to get drunk +underage, you can't hang out with 19yr olds as a 35yr old and you can't hang out with people your own age because it's subject to ucmj.

Haha I joined Marine Corps at 29 and I'm now 31. No regrets at all...I'm thinking of doing OCS if they allow an old dog like me.

"the stupid stuff" everyone who's been in knows, but it it's hard to explain and it usually happens way more often than the "cool stuff" haha

I'm 30 this year in october, and I'm honestly considering trying to join the navy...always wanted to when I was younger but i don't think l was mature enough, and I also have worked a lot of jobs I've really hated and haven't found a good passion and good training.

I’m 33, I’m a pharmacist so I would direct commission as an O-3. Only thing is, I tore my ACL at age 17, got it repaired but the arthritic damage is bad, like you hear the knees creaking when I bend them.

Did Basic when I was 20, released honorably before making battalion. Biggest mistake of my life. Am 32 now and heavily contemplating rejoining Infantry....

Been thinking about this alot lately. Just turned 28, 130 pounds soaking wet, very thin, and wonder if I can cut it Always wanted to be an Army Field Medic until I graduated highschool got into drugs and alcohol (not bad bad, but I have fallen pretty low back then. Like just holding me back now, got a good family, support, and stayed out of jail) and haven't been able to get myself squared away and where an "average adult" should be. No house, no wife, no kids. Got a decent job, I love it but it doesn't pay that well, great work ethic, good runnin car, great family support, just stuck on sleep aids, kratom, cigarettes, and not "happy" with where I'm at. Feel kinda lost and content when I don't have the money and life I'm "supposed" to have by now. If I can motivate, get more active, drop the sleep drugs, kratom, and cigarettes, maybe the military could be the best thing to ever happen to me, idk, been wondering alot.

Hey man, you’re not alone. I’m in a pretty similar situation to yours. I’m 25.

Do not tell them you ever did drugs or kratom. Get clean and make sure all that shit is out of your system and never tell them you had a drug problem

I’m 23 and in a similar situation, but much worse Put down well over a gallon of 5% truly seltzer/day Kratom, Caffeine, Vaping 24/7 etc. along with a few other drugs Grew up extremely capable in sports and school but went down a path of destruction with drugs and alcohol when my mother and step dad divorced Heavily considering fully committing my addictive nature to Special Forces and becoming a savage It’s one hell of a commitment though

Truthfully I'm 28, I've always wanted to go into the military but after highschool I went and got a job and just going through life. Recently I've been seriously considering going into the army or national guard.

Brother, I am also 28. I just put forward my application to join. My friend tells me "the military is for idiots who have no structure or life skills, don't waste your life". I have amazing skills in branding and marketing, and I did the same thing you have, just going through life and doing jobs. Nothing to show for anything I've accomplished. Since I was a kid I have always wanted to join the military. I recently got my citizenship so I'm allowed to join legally. One thing I've learned at my age: even those who know more than me, who mean well, don't have a clue what they're talking about! I made the decision to stop listening to them and make my own choices. At least if I mess up, I only have myself to blame, and won't scapegoat my friend/dad/mentor/schoolteacher or any one else who cared about me and want me to live up to mybpotential. I accepted that they don't know any better than I do. And even though I'm not as young, I'll be looked at funny, and lack the skills to command respect among men, I don't care. I have a burning desire to do this, ever since I was young I've listened to winston Churchill and always wanted to enlist. I want to serve my country as my country has served me and gave me refuge when I needed it most. Point of me saying all this is you're not alone. I wish you the best of luck. Trust your own instincts and live your own life, you have nothing to regret but inaction.
