I'm a Project Superintendent, I read the book when it first came out and have reread it a couple times since. It had such a profound effect on me that I bought copies and gave them to the two assistants I had on site at the time and one for my daughter, almost 10 years ago. I know they read the book because I saw the change in them almost immediately. The book so clearly expressed what I had known but did'nt know how to. I still use the lessons I learned from the book and do my best to carry through whether its the safety of the guys and gals on site or just the planning for the day. I do hold other responsibe but I hold myself responsible first. And yes it applies to everyday life. The book is much more in depth but the talk strikes a nerve!

Using Jocko's own lesson here, who is responsible for "this mentality is deeply missing in this generation"? The answer to that would be the people who raised them, instructed them, and led them. The people who didn't teach and show them how to be responsible and take ownership are at fault. I am not sure if that was the commenter's intended interpretation of his statement or not, but I say, if there is fault found in the young, their elder should be the ones who are ashamed.

Blows my mind that TEDx flagged this. It's one of the most raw and real storytellings I've heard. You can hear the nervousness in his voice and yet he delivered with such paused grace and humility. This is a lesson that goes many layers deep. I'm kinda sad that anyine from TEDx went full Karen on this. Never censor anyone for speaking their truth. All of us have something to learn from each other.

This is the kind of man that I hope lives in every soldier. This man has a level of honor that is so uncommon that it's tragic. If more people were as brave as this man, I am convinced the world would be a far greater place. This is the perfect example of a man that I aspire to be. This human being is exactly the type of "look you in the eye and shake your hand" kind of man that I really hope me and my son can come close to being. I will try Mr. Willink. To be a leader of men at 19, 25, or 50 in a battlefield environment, in business and in life will never be easy. It goes against innate primal feelings to run or hide from hardship. To be a leader means ownership of everything. %100 of effort, I pushed my self hard to be the best leader I could be in the Marines while I was in, To live up to the great leaders and friends I have lost, the lessons they have taught me. I still to this day hyper analyze situations years later on how I could have done better. Always look forward in life, everything is a learning experience and never stop believing in yourself, even if everyone already has.

I come back and rewatch this, because the two things he said that stood out to me the most is: "Don't hide your delicate pride from the truth." And then: "Don't make excuses or blame anyone else or any other thing. Take ownership, of your problems and the solutions for them. Take ownership of EVERYTHING in your life, the GOOD, and the BAD." It's as simple as that, from my perspective. You cannot control what you did in the past, you cannot control what always happens to you, but you CAN control the type of person you will allow yourself to be. That's what he's mainly talking about, deciding who and what you will be.

If you are not willing to face reality, if you are not humble, you cannot learn and grow. Instead you will live an illusion to protect your ego and pride to the detriment of yourself and others around you. There are several forms with different names like stubbornness, narcissism or something else. But it will not work. It will only prolong and create suffering and hinder progress. Only in facing reality, especially those parts we do not want to look at, will you be able to adapt and make progress. Only then, you can be truly a force for the good.
