Those stories from WWII would be priceless. The European's priorities would be wild to hear from someone that was there. When Germany invaded the Italians hid their daughters and wives. The French hid their wine. By comparison when Russia invaded Ukraine the Ukrainians hid their toasters and coffee makers.

I’m only 30 mins into the episode but as a fellow 2-2 Ramrod in Vilseck, Kosovo, FOB Normandy, a near-invasion of Najaf, and then Fallujah (under Mattis’ command), I hope all of you stick with this episode and listen to these two amazing men. Bellavia is a true American hero and has been, and continues to be, a great spokesperson for the Ramrods and our entire post-9/11 generation of combat vets. God Bless him and all those we lost. As a postscript: I read House to House many years ago and can’t wait to read his new book. All gave some and some gave all… freedom isn’t free.

I don't read a lot of books but think I am going to have to buy David's. Out of curiosity, what did you think of Mattis, and the Marines for that matter (I'm a Marine myself but a later generation than OIF and OEF and am just curious) - thanks!

@@sergiogarcia4347 I wouldn't say ungrateful (sure some are) but by in large the American public (citizens, not govt) is very supportive of vets. Being a vet has opened a lot of doors for me and people treat me way better when they find out. Of course, you have some that are condescending or discriminate against us but its a small minority in my experience.

I was also in 2-2 but I didn't get in until mid 06, unit started back up in April of 07, you guys were mentioned in the start up speech. I used to talk to David on Facebook, but recently the account went down, I am assuming that the reason was too many random messages as he mentioned... Think I'll try and get ahold of him again. ☕🤔🇺🇸

My military service was nothing, but David's speech mentioned SSG Matteson. JC and I were in the same squad in OSUT. I have some pretty fond memories of him and when I learned of his death, it hit pretty hard. Jesus, where do we find such men and women who take on more than they should and sacrifice like no one can imagine? I learned this though, after I learned of JC's death, I figured out that instead of thanking someone for their service, we need to live life to the fullest, to be good to people and love as much as we can. Sometimes, I think for a brief moment of what would JC want to do? He would want to hug his Mom and Dad and Sister, and laugh and smile like he did. We can at least do that for them.

I have mixed feelings about my service. Sometimes I get lost in the morals of the "Grand Strategy" and my place in it. Kinda came to a head after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. Sometimes it's hard to remember why I joined. The pride me and my buddies felt, all we accomplished and sacrificed in the 101st. Conversations like this have helped me meet my demons on level ground. This is mission critical work you guys are doing. Thank you.

I found House to House on Audible and I wouldn’t be listening to it if I hadn’t found Jacko Podcast on KZbin (where you talk about being treated as a doormat). I’m at Chapter 20 and it’s just wow 😮as a very spoiled and privileged person, I am in awe of what American and Aussie armed forces do. Thank you so much for eliminating such awful people. To me, it’s something that I would really struggle to do, but most definitely appreciate the hard work, bravery and depths of hell you’d have to delve into at the time and live with forever to do your job. It takes strength of character, courage and determination to endure, and step over that mental barrier of ‘not turning tail and running’ which is purely instinctual, and really fighting. I can’t even watch movies like Saving Private Ryan because I would be bawling and my empathy would be lost on extremists. Much credit to everyone who does this. It’s all good and well for people like me to want peace, and never touch a gun (no hate, just fear) but when there is good in the world, it is always counteracted with a modicum of bad 😢and it takes good people to step up and eliminate threats. I would love to know how a little old 47 year old chunky butt could help out anywhere ♥️ and continue the good work on a larger peaceful level. The desire to do good is there, and now that my kids are grown, I can do more.

I was in the reserves when I read his book House to House. That book made me feel like I wasn't really doing anything or contributing to the fight in either Iraq or Afghanistan. So I changed mos and went active duty. I went from a generator mechanic to a combat engineer and my unit was the same. 3/1. Duke brigade. We served years apart but I feel honored to have served in the same unit as these warriors. My fight was in Afghanistan, but I wish I was there with these guys in Iraq. However they definitely were in good hands with good leaders (at least at the company and squad level).

I met David up at FOB Normandy when he returned as a journalist ( 2007-2008 timeframe) . I was in a special program as an attachment from the law enforcement side of the house and embedded with the 3/2 SCR . David had come up to see his guy Fitz who he talks about on the podcast and in his books . Fitz was the real deal like David a combat historian on enemies TTPs a real warfighter . I went out with Fitz more than once on mission or patrol and witness the teaching moments that Collin Fitz would pass along to his Platoon that would save lives and defeat the enemy . I as David did, learned so much from Collin and his lessons and it help me to have success and to get home safely. Thank you David for your service and also Jocko for this great podcast. DY NYPD
