This is so articulated well. “You want to take care of your team, then that’s done by uplifting or improving the organization you are in.” It implies, you don’t need to be a therapist to be a leader. You don’t need to get involved in the emotions and thoughts of your team, only their purpose with respect to the organization. It may also imply that the organization is infallible, but first take care of your team because if the organization axes a team member, then you help them up and leave the organization. But keep your team members close is level one task.

As a former soldier (member of a team), to a section commander (leading a team) to CEO of my own company (leading a civilian team), there are many variables on this topic. As a leader, if you have the opportunity to hand pick your team, pick based on alignment to your values and your mission, NOT skills. Skills can be taught, purpose can not. If you have a team of shit bags, that you didn't get to choose, the balls in your court to bring them up to speed. To train, mentor and lead them. I personally looked for the best within the team, worked more with them than anyone else, and then used them to help train the others (under guidance).

In management there's the Peter principle (shamelessly quoting Wikipedia here): The Peter principle states that a person who is competent at a job will earn promotion to a more senior position which requires different skills. If the promoted person lacks the skills required for the new role, he or she will be incompetent at the new level, and will not be promoted again. If the person is competent in the new role, he or she will be promoted again, and will continue to be promoted until reaching a level at which he or she is incompetent. Being incompetent, the individual will not qualify for promotion again, and so will remain stuck at that final level (termed "Final Placement" or "Peter's Plateau"). This outcome is inevitable, given enough time and assuming that there are enough positions in the hierarchy to which competent employees may be promoted. This happened to me too so I took a step down back to my field of competence and now I'm writing a research paper which also covers that issue to help the bosses to not make that mistake again.

Probably depends on the team size. In this case, talking about platoons, yeah, it’s definitely possible to statistically end up with a bunch of duds. That’s why I actually prefer Napoleon’s version of the quote. “There are no bad regiments, only bad colonels”. Once you start getting into the high hundreds or low thousands, it’s a lot less credible to blame the grunts than the boss

Im in a leadership role, so yes i definitely agree. I never got to choose my team, there a definitely bad teams out there. The thing i did was observe and rearrange people to positions better suited for them and the team overall so the team is most efficient

Tactics is what happens on the Battlefield. Strong decision making when it comes to give orders to men on the field i.e: changing formations which SIDE to attack and when to. Strategy is on political SIDE of war. I.e: we are going to attack this place due to its bountiful reaources; if we support this nation this momment, they're be on our side and support our insterests.

It's fairly simple... Tactics are the short term decisions made... usually in the sense of "boots on the ground" level thinking. There's already been the briefings, recon's, information... and then you're in the field, where the tides of battle and the directions of forces can shift in a heartbeat... so tactical calls have to be made in the moment. From the daily cycles of force marching to setting camp times and guard watches, since one camp to the next bivouac will change format regularly... Charging into small villages with a shock-and-awe style sweep and clear can be a call made "on the spot" (so tactical)... Strategy is the over-view, the long term method to an ends. This is where the pre-war recon' counts, and you can decide "Northern route or Southern route?" as you're preparing to drive an army across a continent, taking up as much territory at the least cost you can get away with... This is where you decide whether you should go straight for an empire's capital city with a "Cut the head off and the serpent will die" over-all method... OR will you take the time to lay waste to the first couple of cities, sacrificing them outright, and use the flow of reputation to intimidate a withdrawal while besieging other cities in a "war of attrition" strategy... ;o)

Jocko is speaking about platoon element tactics. That is carried out by troop leading procedures. Strategy is based on who is planning. As a platoon sergeant it would seem tactical to have a 3-5 second rush (tactical) on an element in order to secure a control point that allows for easy access to a bridge (Strategy). Access to bridge means faster logistics to battalion. That is why everyone responded so vaguely with definitions. Chess can explain tactics versus strategy as well.

Thank you all for the explanations, points of view. If i understand correctly, strategy is the long term goal, and tactics is how you achieve it. Or in other words, like a goal and the road towards it. In my experience, there is no road without a goal, and equally no goal without the road towards it. My hypothesis and perception is that the "way" in which one does something is more important than "what" on does. For what does it mean to do something if one does not know how he does it. Then the road becomes the goal and the goal becomes the road.

I admittedly got in a heated debate yesterday with a group of my friends, they believe my “self help guru” and “mindset” are intrusive, pushy, extra, and I let my ego get in the way, I defended myself and the ways I preach. I know in principle what to do, but how do I change my actions to fit, when I see somebody say for example “I could workout today because” , I call it out. Clean up your own yard before you bitch about my bagonias... right? The only thing "calling out" generally does is make a big scene out of a small thing. In some cases (overt racial disparity, for instance) it's certainly called for... BUT reserve that for someone being a complete turd... and make an example of dressing him/her/them down. It should be rare in most folks' lives... Then concentrate on taking what's useful of this (and others') podcast a part of your work-ethic and over-all effort. Let failure and the frustrations that come with it become "the other guys' problems"... OR (TL;DR) "Fuck 'em! Their legs ain't broke! They can do the leg work for their own damn research!" ;o)

I really appreciate the insight into showing the mission really means taking care of your people. However, an organization doesn’t exist in a vacuum, there are more organizations out there. If a business fails, as an individual, you would just go to the next business rather than attempt to be that employee who will bring the organization in good standing. So if the mission fails, I take care of self and leave the organization. It’s a mindset of most employees. They see work as a paycheck rather than their business.

Jocko, here is a question for you. I was in a wrong place at a wrong time and got beat up. I was too cocky to just move away. I trained some martial arts and if I was sober, I would probably be able to defend myself. But I had some kind of freeze, I could not move, I had tunnel vision and walked away with black eye, half my face slightly swolen and bruised leg. I fully accept it was mostly my fault for letting my ego get the better of me, but it still hurts, not only physically but also mentally. What should I do now?

What if the team is a bunch of lazy, crybaby, twelve year olds who don’t want to work. Also, you can’t get them to stop being drama queens and get them to work because they are union and they don’t care what you say, because the leader is not union. This is a serious question. My wife is in this position and she is also in a male dominated industry. And her boss, who is not at the same location, doesn’t want to hear it and blames her for low moral. She is stuck and at the point of finding a different job.

Sun Tzu had described similar thing. The story goes somewhat like this - he made a bet with the king that he can make soldiers out of his concubines. The king was not to interfere, Sun Tzu (or some other guy - does not matter) had a free reign in this regard. So he gathered all the concubines and started to train them some movements, like march forward, turn etc. Of course they did not listen, just laughed at him. So he took one of them (king's favourite actually) and executed her. From now on, all other concubines would follow the orders without hesitation. Why did he do that? 1. to show that such behaviour will not be tolerated 2. because the king's favourite was in a position of leadership among the others. Example goes from above. It translates easily to your wife's situation - she should find out who is the "apha" among her workers and make him responsible for reporting to her. Let him be her right hand. If nothing changes - fire his ass. Next in line should be more willing to co-operate
