Tried that in the past. Realized that there's consequences that I had to deal with and stopped. What,, you think after having sex with a girl, she'll magically disappear and you can go on doing what you're doing? She's going to stick around. And you now have to treat her right about every day of the year. Not that I went that far, I gave up girls because it's a pain for people who don't want to deal with it.

So jocko reminds me of my father. My dad was a banker. Not skilled in combat. Out of shape. Ect. What reminds me of my father is his incredible knowledge of leadership. My dad took a common sense down and dirty approach to life. He did what worked and he was a great leader/ manager of people. And I get reminded of that everytime I watch this podcast. So thank you for that.

Echo saying “seeing it one time is a way bigger difference than never seeing it”. Totally agree. In a management position I’ve come across situations and been like “how do I assess this?”, then the next time I use that experience and build off of it. I tell my subordinates that you won’t truly know what to do until you’ve dealt with a situation at least once.

It's amazing to consider how a group of people with all the information and long analysis can still make terrible decision. For instance during the first world war the construction of the Maginot line supposed to stop the german invasion, while the german just got around it. Well if group of intelligent people can make this king of mistake, imagine the magnitude of the mistake you can make by yourself.

What if your working memory is not good enough to run multiple possibilities and their outcomes in your head while on your feet?
@lukecronquist60036 жыл бұрын
I would give the asshole answer that probably you should not be taking the leadership role then. Or at least get an assistant that is really good at that, like a computer style analytical person (contrary to the stereotype, most of us analytical types can think just as well on our feet). Personally I am that and I have the opposite problem; not exactly analysis paralysis but the mental noise can obscure the events of the moment. I dunno. I am a strong believer in leadership teams ~ delegating leadership partially into who you are leading. You want the logical, thinker, etc, but also 'the mom' ~ morale booster, etc.

“You have to learn to detatch” I see a dichotomy here: how do you detatch and yet also exercise ownership? My answer: own the learning process. Whats yours?
@smexijebus4 жыл бұрын
I think it's that you detach in the sense of trying to get that 'big picture' view of the situation, in order to not get overwhelmed by your stress, fears, and anxieties. I don't think detachment and ownership are mutually exclusive, in fact, detaching would probably help you better take ownership, I think. If you're not detached, if you're only worrying about the things that can go wrong, the consequences of failure, you're too in your own head to be able to deal with things effectively. But if you detach from your worries, it allows you to calm down, think clearly, and act in a way that is best for you and everyone around you, thereby taking ownership of the situation.
