The part about BUDS where you have to focus on the next two minutes, next thirty seconds, is a great analogue to anyone going through truly tough circumstances. Endurance is not about how strong you are. It’s about perspective. Just get through the next day, the next two minutes. You will take strength from reaching that objective. And then you get into a rhythm. Break your long term goal into tiny bite size pieces. That’s how you build endurance.

Clever and thoughtful: Jocko refuses to get dragged into complaining and blaming the "Left", the "media", "identity politics", "Millenials", "Socialism", but instead brings the focus back on his mantra: our individual responsibility as the leader we can be => the most consequential way to change things and move forward--e.g how he turns things around on blanket-blaming the Millenials using the Vietnam War's draftees example at 3:04:08 and shows humility: "we can always complain about the junior generation...The freaking kids in the teams right now are way better than I was". This to me is America at its best, fortitude, and why I listen to this podcast.
@tonya3308

Any system that is purely capitalistic or socialistic would not work - what does work is a system that takes the best of all systems regardless of what its called - you cannot argue with success. The current system has perpetuated a consolidation of wealth and power to a few - at the expense of smaller innovative entities. Liberals or conservatives are not bad - we need both - an AOC is needed to counteract the likes of Mitch McConnell, for example. Unfortunately so many do not understand the difference between socialism and communism, or even capitalism, or even economics.

Jocko puts down those millenial haters along with Tony Eafrati in a podcast as they served with mostly millenials as the backbone of their units. Many, many millenials are snowflakes but should not be generalized as such. However taking money from citizens is counterintuitive to freedom he fought for, as does identity politics as he discussed with Jonny Kim. The media is bullshit, but he knows there is no point to bring those idiots up.

I don't 100% agree with his socialism points, tho. Socialism was an ideology born a LONG time ago, during a time when ppl were trully oppressed. (I really, really need ppl to read history.) Bc otherwise you don't have the right context for view points. That was the era of serfs and mass starvation punctuated by economic depression, and massively inneffective warfare. That is the only reason why "socialism" was ever a thing. "Socialism" today does not trully exist. And socialism as a general feeling online, on twitter or whatever, rises when you have mass problems. If you have companies which have been poisoning ppl for decades for instance. If entire districts have lost their jobs. Socialism is not the answer to that. But you do need to enforce regulations! Stop fighting ideological battles if you don't need to. Fix the underlining cause. And understand the historical context bc it will help you speak to ppl from different parts of the world. Otherwise you will keep fighting loosing ideological battles, when you don't need to. "You" is a general you, btw. The "lurch" is there bc they are used to having to go to extremes on both ends of the spectrum in order to get anything at all done. Which is fundamentally bad/inneffective bc it causes ppl to distrust their politicians. They're used to them lieing at this point. And yes that is a problem. In a well regulated capitalist society you don't get this issue. The generation he is worried about is young and grew up, so far, in an environment where they HAVE to exaggerate. It is habbit. By attacking that, or misinterpreting it, you lose out on having that dialogue and coming together, and getting ppl working together towards a common goal. I'm not saying they are right. They are wrong. I'm saying, understand the root cause of the problem. Bc then you ca fix the housing issue by removing unnecessary red tape, and the wage is fine now. Or you can build smaller boutique-style homes which cost significanltly less (but still do NOT contain asbestos in the ceiling) and then again the ppl earning less can afford those. At the end of the day, this might just be a logistic problem. It may just be that someone took one too many bribes or forgot to look at population growth numbers and attract investment. Not everyone acts with the best intentions. But if you do, or if HE does. You can fix a lot of the issues which are driving modern "socialism". (sorry this is so long, its been bugging me for a while).

Walk a mile in someone else's shoes has been something I learned in my life. When I hear complaining people who complain about the most minor issue. It truly pisses me off. Then you hear that the squeaky wheel always gets the grease. Eventually that squeaky wheel gets replaced for one that doesn't squeak. Over complaining actually slows down a companies efficiency and causes more in house fighting and bickering. The Israelites wondered the wilderness for 40 years because of their rebellious nature and continual complaining of what God provided for them. They were ungrateful for what the Lord provided and also for getting them out of Egyptian captivity. Even in ancient times. It wouldn't take 40 years to even walk from Egypt to Israel. Which means that they were forced by God to walk in circles. This is such a great illustration of what complaining and having ungratefulness will do to a person, a family, an employer, a community, a state, and a country. It causes a cycle that continues on and on of being left out in the wilderness with no direction and goal in life.

Apparently still had my sense of humor...asked for a pillow for my balls, sister wound up getting it, and many other similar stories. They documented the entire month while I was in lala land. It was very helpful when looking at pics & reading accounts. While under nothing but darkness. With one tiny tiny tiny spec of light. Fought every moment while intubated. Maybe because it was written considering how things were hundreds of years ago? What's happening in countries that are not as trigger happy? American police visited Finland to see why the local police force doesn't fire guns more than 7 shots (the whole police force combined) annually. A random guy walked towards them downtown at night, and the american police freaked out that local police weren't getting ready to draw guns. The random guy just came to ask directions from the police and walked away. The key to safe streets is not through arming everyone.
