Looks like a nice time. For tics, peppermint oil will make them back out. Look up how to J-stroke with your canoe paddle, then you will be able to paddle on either side of the boat as long as you want without switching left and right. Thanks for sharing, take care.

Appreciate and enjoy your videos. Visited BWCAW 2 or 3 times a year many years ago. Now my kids do, and soon maybe the grandkids. Your videos are really true … have the right feeling. Two comments: Glad to see you wear your PFD…it’s a must do. People should just try to put one on while IN the water, and they will understand why you put them on BEFORE going in the water. Another tip: Tie a 15 ft length onto the bow of your canoe of that crummy yellow floating plastic rope. It’s not good for much, but doubles the ability to get back ahold of your canoe if you dump. Also, tie that ultralight canoe to something when you get out. It doesn’t take much of a breeze to send a canoe out into the lake while you’re left looking on from shore. Have fun. Be safe.

The birdsong when you are paddling at the start is the white throated Sparrow. It's my favourite bird call and always reminds me of the bwca. Premithrin works pretty well against ticks.

Thanks for sharing your adventure. Have to wait patiently for Sept. for my bwca trip. Regarding the ticks, as an old turkey hunter, I highly recommend the sawyer permetherin. Just hang pants, shirts, and socks on a line and spray them down and let dry before wearing. Best wishes.

Beautiful canoe, congrats on your solo trip. Might I suggest some more practice with your paddle for steering so you don't have to switch sides every three strokes, you may get into trouble had there been high winds. Happy to see you using the proper tool for the vessel though, good luck on your future trips.

Lots of people comment this on my videos. I do use C stroke/J stroke and even skulling. I much prefer to switch sides when solo paddling especially in high winds. I find I have more “pull” per stroke when doing this and don’t mind the switching and getting packs mildly wet. I’ve even won first place in solo Paddling competition twice 😉. Not saying that to toot my horn, just want to alleviate the concern many people have for me! I really do appreciate these comments and everyone’s care. ☺️

Fabulous video. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your trip with us. One thing I need to mention (I'm sure you expect nosy advice from an old canoeist!) When canoeing solo, the dean of North American canoeing Bill Mason (and daughter Becky) advises that one sit toward the middle of the canoe length, slightly to one side (angling the canoe), and using J-strokes to steer. All of this reduces the paddling energy expended. Cheers!

I definitely use j stoke sometimes. But when using my large two-three person canoe solo the j-stroke doesn’t really work. The canoe catches wind too easily and full strokes are necessary. Definitely more effort but otherwise it does not with with this canoe. Thank you for your comments and for watching with us! Enjoyed your video. When paddling solo the j stroke is really helpful. It's a great skill to have paddling stern in tandem as well. Once you learn it you'll be really glad you did. Happy paddling!

I actually do know the j-stroke and c-stroke but I don’t love them. I prefer to keep moving forward quickly, even if my things get a bit wet in the canoe from dripping paddles. Everyone is so different ☺️☺️

Looked great!! Great video! We got back last week from our trip. Rain and thunderstorms with 3 days of howling wind. Tough paddling in and out, but still a great trip because a rough trip camping in the BWCA is still better than a good day at work in Louisiana 95 degree weather!! Us southerners were quite chilly at night in the low 40’s. Glad the weather held out for you!

I enjoyed your video. I came late to canoeing but have been lucky to have 67 trips, a few elsewhere but most in Quetico to Brent Lake, and for the past few years with Covid, into Saganaga in the BWCAW. All of my trips are solo now, my paddling buddies having either gotten old and quit or my best. passed on. i will look at your other videos and plan my two trips this coming canoe season.

I recommend the J-stroke for straight canoeing on a lake or calm water. Saves on all of the switching sides.

I’m not a j-stroke fan. Especially in this canoe. It’s huge and catches wind. Easier to switch sides in my opinion. Many people do agree with you. I find it interesting! Different folks different strokes! 😉

Woohooo it’s getting close! There are wood tick removing tools you can buy if you never want to touch one! I still think they are fairly mild. 🙂

Thank you for the relaxing time in the woods! We have had a large increase of Ticks in Nova Scotia (took 22 off my dog from a 1.5hr hike). Used to seeing a few, but now I expect to pull at least 7 off the pup every trip out. My last few camp trips this year I have not seen any, but I also started using Sawyers Permethrin on my clothes and boots as recommended by Shug Emery. I tried a few natural repellents and did not find they had any effect here. Mostly Deer and Brown Dog ticks in this area. Thanks again!

I love your videos. I once lived in the upper Midwest and did a BWCA/ Quetico trip every year. Now I live in California but going to do another trip to the BWCA with my sons and grandson using canoes I am building next summer. For ticks, use permethrin ON YOUR CLOTHES ( not on you). It paralyzes and kills ticks and mosquitos. DEET repels them. Keep enjoying life and sharing your experiences. We all enjoy them.

Pick up a few packs of mosquito coils. Set them up on your perimeter + bug spray, and you'll kive bug free for the most part. Its amazing how well mosquito coils work

I just got a canoe esquif 16 prospecteur fully fitted out not used or been in a canoe but now looking to get some training in here in the UK before my Great Glen canoe trail in Scotland during August raising money for the Atzhiemers Society. I will be getting out for other adventures wild camping with the canoe and doing some wild life photography. I am retired so got some time on my hands in between part time job Great video and so peaceful out there in Canada on the lakes here in the UK we have got a few lakes and rivers which I plan to paddle on wish i did this years ago when i was younger 😊

Ticks have just been awful for me this year. I’ve never had more than 1-3 ticks on me for a season, and on one leg of a trip I had at least 20. Edit: you brought and cooked pizza rolls. You’re an absolute legend.

If you use a J stroke you won’t have to switch sides so frequently. It will keep your canoe straight. Enjoy your trip

I am one of the few who really just prefers to switch sides when paddling. Especially when I use the large white canoe solo. This canoe is tough when there isn’t enough weight, because of how high it sits and how even if it’s calm, the breeze blows you around 😂 the J stroke is barely enough steering power per stroke and it’s just frustrating. I just find it more efficient for me to switch sides especially in this canoe. I know I’m in the minority, but sticking to what feels best for me has been serving me well. 😊😊😊 are you a Boundary waters person? I hope you get to get out there this summer!

Good luck on your trip! This headband was from Dunham’s I believe. It’s a tad big on my head but when I bunch it up it stays in place. I also bring a scarf and wrap that around my head to keep bugs away from my ears when not wearing a bug net on my head.

I do have one and I actually packed it on this trip..But these campsites didn’t have a great place to set it up so I just didn’t bother.
