Jody is unique, the way she sang and danced and always with high heels. Greetings from Heidelberg / Germany

I see the reference - Jody had her on style even from SOultrain days. But, you see elements of Cyndi Lauper, Madonna in her dress style, for Jody was also a trend setter. And dance music used a template that worked. But Jody had great hits - GREAT HITS.

Speaking on ITZJT's comparison of Jody Watley to Janet Jackson at around 3:03, she's not that far off. Consider this little bit of timeline history: Generationally speaking, a teenaged Janet Jackson probably grew up watching and studying Jody Watley back in the late 70s and 80s when Jody was both a Soul Train dancer and an original member of the noted R&B trio Shalamar. So Jody arguably was an early influence on Janet rather than the other way around; its just that Janet had a far more successful career. Not coincidently, it was also Jody's Shalamar bandmate and Soul Train dance partner Jeffrey Daniel who taught Janet's older brother Michael how to do the now iconic 'Moonwalk'. Respect and RIP to MJ.

It is similar to Janet Jackson's "Nasty Boys." BTW, this is where Arnold's line came from, "Hasta la vista, baby," in the second Terminator movie. It's crazy, the amount of people who think Arnold is where that came from, and quote him from the movie, not knowing, Jodie Watley rap-sang it first.

Janet was probably influenced by Jody! Jody was around long before Janet started her singing career. She was in Shalamar from the 1970's. 😎 And she was a fabulous Trendsetter too!

Your Janet comparison on the sound is on point. This song was produced/cowritten by Andre Cymone, a childhood friend of Prince who was in his first band. Janet’s music from this same ‘86/‘87 era was produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, formerly of The Time, a great funk/r&b band that Prince introduced to the world. But that sound?!? Whether it’s Prince, Andre/Jody, Janet, Alexander O’Neal, and other greats…all is part of The Minneapolis Sound. Janet had early albums as a teen without it…she went to Minny, got with Jimmy & Terry at 21 and made a Hall of Fame career. That Control/Rhythm Nation/janet/Velvet Rope album stretch is one of the best 4-album runs in history. Jody Watley, a stronger singer (not the same as artist) than Janet…had left a group called Shalomar, who were big back when Janet was still just acting, went out to Minneapolis…linked with Andre Cymone, together they made back-to-back solo classics under her name. I say all that to say…your instincts were on point, as they usually are. And I’m glad to see you enjoyed this banger. She’s got a rack of em if you wanna do another again: “Don’t You Want Me”, “Still a Thrill”, “Some Kind Of Lover”, “Real Love”, “Friends (featuring Rakim)”. Keep up the good work, it is very much appreciated. Peace.
