Moving from classical to jazz embouchure is similar to moving the mouth and lips from saying YES to a position ready to say NO. Say YES, then NO, and observe how the shape of the lower lip (and your mouth shape) changes. For classical > YES embouchure. For jazz > NO embouchure. In YES position, the lower lip is stretched wider, its skin is tight as a drum, which suppresses some reed 'buzz'. In NO position (jazz position), the opposite: lower lip is soft, not tight, and the reed vibrates freely, creating that extra 'buzz' which we hear in jazz music.

Oh my god. I've always wanted that super jazzy tone but I sound like the 2.5 reed with classical embrochure and I never knew how to fix it. THANKS SO MUCH!! (From a very happy clarinettist now saxophonist :))

For the case above I did not recommend a softer reed because the players question came from someone playing a Jazz 2.5 reed. But the reed is very important. A classical 3.5 or 3 even will be harder to get a Jazz sound than a 2.5 or 3 Jazz reed. Jody Espina

JodyJazz Inc I have recently gotten the Jody jet 6 to replace my Claude lakey 5. Until I tried this jet mouthpiece I couldn’t find one I liked better than my lakey. But wow... I find your mouthpiece plays well with various strength reeds. A forgiving mouthpiece with a big sound. So I’m trying legere signature series reeds. Been playing 2.5 but recently tried several strengths and found the sweet spot in the fullness of sound with 3.25. 3 was not as big and 3.5 seemed too controlled for lack of a better description. I tried these reeds using my normal Embouchure which I have an ok jazz sound but not great. So I’m trying the new Embouchure that you and others have recommended but finding it difficult with the 3.25 reed. Would the 3.25 be too strong for the jazz sound or is it a matter of training the Embouchure? I know you recommended a 3 for the person in who wrote the letter. Does it depend on the hours practice per week. This is more for a hobby these days. Thanks!

Super quality advice. Wish I had this info 20+ yrs ago, back in college there were so many hack teachers eating up time and cash. Also very limited selection of decent consistent mouthpieces. Quality Advice and quality products, this guy walks the walk and talks. Thank you Jody. Also I'm loving the Super Jet on alto. Once this COVID 19 thing clears up I can try it out with real people in a larger room/bar instead of my closet+computer.

Step 1: apply cork grease to ur lips vigorously. Step 2: turn the mouthpiece the right way (reed facing up). Step 3: put the horn in its case n go home.

This should help, as an adult getting back into playing after twenty years, I had to redevelope my embouchure and didn't have time to practice for several hours a day. I stuck with the Jazz embouchure and had to stay with softer Reeds. It's harder to blend in concert band.

M Burton how did you make out with the new open embouchure? When I was in high school a played on a Selmer Larry Teal and a private teacher helped me switch to an open embouchure. It freed up my sound so much that the band teacher though I had changed my mouthpiece.

Sushi_Tech lower your reed size, your reed strength may be to high and that makes the sound airy and hard to project.

I play a Ralph Morgan jazz It's really fat like most HRs and because it's a very high quality peice finding the centre is very easy. I play slightly bright or round or loose because the other side has me sounding like a bass clarinet, which IS actually what I do at symphony, this is what you can get if you want to spend the bucks....

Alternate fingerings can have a small change in tone which to me is fine in certain circumstances, but its mostly the embouchure since its the main thing that changes your sound. Like you can place your tongue on a tip of the reed and it will sound muffled, and if you want a certain note to pop out from the rest, just have the proper embouchure and then go back to that "muffled" sounds. Im not sure if any of this is correct, but feel free in correcting me

At my school there really strict of how we look and what pieces to use while playing. I play on a size 3 Vandoren reed with a selmer c star. Do you think with enough practice I'll be able to get a jazz sound for my friends and family or will I have to change reeds or mouthpiece?

LaserW0lf I have a Selmer C star for my tenor and it’s pretty difficult to get a jazz sound out of it. Since it is designed for concert band, the c star will not deliver the sound you want for jazz. I recommend starting with a Vandoren V16 for your saxophone, and using green java reeds if you want to start practicing jazz.

Are you saying that lip position does not make any difference? Must admit, this Classical Vs Jazz Emboucher was news to me until recently, but there are numerous videos demonstrating a similar tonal difference. Good air stream is key, but slight adjustments of emboucher do seem to produce a fuller tone as demonstrated here.
