If you're following the rules of the game but the other players aren't, you might think that gives you some credit (and ideally it should), but in practice that just makes you a pushover. Favreau also pointed out that lesson at 15:56 : "we have learned, over the last 8 years now, if something is a norm and it's important, maybe make it a law, right, because the norms are gone" (it's not possible to completely eliminate loopholes, but I guess you could at least try to minimize them with clear and concise language).

And, if at the time of saying it, you didn't think you'd do it, it isn't a lie either - you can't lie retrospectively. This isn't some poor unfortunate soul that was caught in the crossfire of political agenda. This is a 54 year old repeat offender committing felonies over an extended period of time (11 years). To say that it was unfair that he was charged for these offenses is absolutely ludicrous. Anyone else puts in a crime spree like that will end up in jail, unless of course their father is the POTUS. I am pretty disappointed in the Pardon take. First because Hunter's treatment was way out of bounds according to ever legal analyst who spoke about this. But second, Trump and his surrogates have made it clear that they will be on a revenge tour, including Hunter. One does note lose their right to fair treatment before the law by virtue of being the President's son. Evaluate the pardon on the merits (or lack there of of the prosecution), not on the relationship. I doubt that Biden would have pardoned Hunter if Harris had won. I don't disagree that pardons for Fauchi and others is appropriate given the revenge tour rhetoric. Maybe Trump et al will lose steam, but I wouldn't count on it. Finally, I understand that you guys are pundits, but the reality is that this pardon is not going to be defining of Joe's presidency, or hos legacy writ large. Joe is not a tragic figure. He has been an excellent president who made 1 critical mistake (running again) but it is super easy for all of us to call that a mistake in hindsight. It is important to keep the responsibility where it belongs. On Trump and his sycophants. Had he won reelection or had Harris won, remember just how close the election was, then his grand mistake turns out to not be a mistake at all. And the same is true if he had declined to run for reelection at all, and the Dem nominee lost. This Monday morning quarterbacking culture is the same one commented that "if only Joe had run in 2016 Trumpism would have died in the cradle." That statement is possibly true, but only matters in hindsight since "there was no way Trump could beat Hillary anyway". *sigh*

Can you imagine that Biden made this choice lightly? I can't. He knows that they would NEVER stop coming after Hunter. And I hope Biden has a decent group of people, including Tim Miller, on his list. I don't know if it's the best idea, but how better do we protect people?

I don't know, you could protect yourself by not being a depraved criminal 🤷🏻 a pardon spanning the last 11 years? C'mon.
@scarletsletter4466Күн бұрын
😂 Friend, NOBODY needs a blanket pardon spanning 11 years. It’s broader than what Nixon got. We whine about Trump pardons but he (1) pardoned ppl for specific crimes & (2) after they’d served their time/ punishment

Like I've written elsewhere, don't stop with pardoning Hunter. Commute the sentences of the 40 people on federal death row, cancel student debt by executive order, protect abortion on the national level by an executive order, move weed off the schedule one list, order Deep State operatives to make the Trump presidency a bureaucratic nightmare, get freaky with the red-tape president Biden! And make Trump live with it or roll it back so he's saddled with the unpopular reversals. Give 'em hell, Joe!

@@jfrsnjhnsn As Keith Olbermann said, Biden needs to pardon all his staff,Democratic politicians, supportive media figures, etc., their spouses, and all family, including pets. I’m with him on this.

Hunter Biden deserves to be pardoned. He and his family have suffered enough. And a fair deal had originally been reached,, but was abandoned because of politics.

I'd love to be angry about this, but instead it has really shown me how much faith I lost in the importance of propriety, norms, whatever you want to call it, with this election. I still think it's not the right thing to do, but I can't imagine being able to hold myself to that standard at that cost in Joe's position right now. I would use my privilege to show a family member mercy even if it was undeserved, and I would not let a guy who pardoned someone for scamming his own constituents shame me for it.
@Dac85Күн бұрын
Yes I imagine Joe was at the point of 'well the american people clearly don't give a shit about abuse of power, this is my last job ever, we campaigned on trying to do the right thing and lost in a landslide because of it, and the next guys are yahoos that are going to continue politically persecuting my remaining son just to be cruel, so fuck it'.
@scarletsletter4466Күн бұрын
I agree with you, but here’s the thing: if we cared about our child & we’re POTUS, we would’ve done it before this. You wouldn’t wait & then give the broadest pardon in history, going back 11 years & broader than Nixon. If it’s just tax evasion, you wouldn’t do this. You’d only do this if you’re really trying to stop an investigation into yourself. Yes, that’s a “rightwing talking point” right now. But it’s also TRUE. This doesn’t make sense under any other lens

@@caela79 how is this good parenting? Teaching your kid they do not have to pay the consequences of your actions ruins is good parenting?
@caela79Күн бұрын
@IndigoBellyDance Hunter isn't a freaking toddler. This won't teach him that there's no consequences for his actions. If anything it'll show him that his father puts his love of family above politics. It'll also show he's willing to protect him from retribution (which Trump has promised) that has nothing to actually do with him. Let's he honest, the GOP when after Hunter because they couldn't find anything to stuck to Joe. If his last name hadn't been Biden, he never would have been criminally charged with either the gun paperwork or the late taxes. At most he'd have been given a civil infraction and slapped with a fine. With Trump on his way back into office, I have no doubt his sentencing would also have been ridiculous and I have no problem with Joe protecting him from further GOP harassment.

In consideration of all the massive egos in DC, I do not see President Biden as making self-serving or transactional decisions. I think he saw Trump as an existential threat when few did, and that compelled him to defeat him. I think he judged the American public as too bigoted to elect a woman and he was right. Even after he appointed women in positions of power, the backlash convinced him that Harris would not win.

That's like saying that vomiting is worse than having diarrhea. All of Trump's picks have been a big middle finger to decency and being qualified for the job. Old Bankrupt Donny is trying to surround himself with people as bad as him so he'll have people with whom he gets along working for him.
