Guys like Joe and Eric Johnson would not start your second lick on an upstroke. They would start with a downstroke and then sweep through to the next string, also doing a downstroke. Check out some of Troy Grady's videos. He has some extremely good ones on the pick mechanics of Eric Johnson, as well as others.

You could start with an upstroke or downstroke and still keep Eric Johnsons mechanics. I've seen a lot of Troy Grady's videos - they are great. The key part of Eric's playing is that any time you cross strings, it is done with a downstroke. If you start my example lick with an upstroke, you are still switching strings with a downstroke, and thus can keep the "downward pick-slant", as Troy Grady explains it. The economy picking is only needed if you need to switch strings after a downstroke.

Great vids, you should talk about using metronome and the five pentatonic position. Metronome is the best way to get our left and righ hands in synchronisation with each other, I think it the most challenging part. The key of success is playing slowly first than increase the speed slowly but surely to get it perfectly.
