Are you constantly playing the same old licks using the minor pentatonic scale?
Do you look at shredders like Phil X and Joe Bonamassa and wonder 'how on earth do these guys play such mind-blowing licks using the minor pentatonic?'
Well, you're not alone. I used to struggle to get creative with this 5-note scale and I too would look at players of that calibre and feel inspired but at the same time I admittedly felt a little bit hopeless...
I could not fathom how they were able to create such blisteringly fast, technical and fresh-sounding lines using the same scale that I'd been playing with for years.
Everything I played with the minor pentatonic sounded re-hashed, cliché, stale, repetitive... and if you're nodding your head reading this, then you yourself know exactly what I mean!
Fortunately I was able to move past that and unlock new approaches to using the minor pentatonic by simply looking at what those guys were doing in great detail.
I would watch videos on KZbin, pick a scale run that I liked the sound of, slow the video down and loop it over and over, I would even tab out the line in Guitar Pro note-for-note and after doing so I was able to analyse what was going on and figure out the key ingredients that made, say, a Joe Bonamassa pentatonic lick, sound so damn amazing!
Fortunately for you, what this means is that I've already cracked the code on what makes their pentatonic runs so incredible and so in this free KZbin lesson, I'm sharing with you THREE pentatonic scale runs that take influence from the likes of Phil X and Joe Bonamassa so that the next time you take a solo on a gig, you can turn heads with your newfound pentatonic approaches!

I am so proud of you Ross. This is awesome Dude 👌 For sure no doubt... you are the Master. I've been following your lessons for awhile , a coupla years or so and you were the one who made Music Theory 🎶 make sense. I appreciate you so much. I am an Advocate for the Americans With Disabilities and I have been trying to find online instruction to recommend to those with challenges on how to learn guitar in different formats other than sight driven. You might be able to help me out with your Bulletproof 2.0 Online course 😉. Best of luck to you.

About 4yrs ago, I got injured at work. Had a good 6months off. I started searching KZbin for great online teachers to pass the time. With a lot of time on my hands, I researched well over 200 online teachers. I found about 12 that taught real, no bs, lessons playing our favorite instrument. Ross is in my top 12 for sure. You've found a Great guy and teacher! Keep playing, enjoy and Rock on!!

Wow! I read all these comments about Ross after I posted to keep mine pure and authentic. This guy Ross Campbell must be related to Vivian Campbell. Aside from several similarities, Ross is just phenomenal at playing and teaching. Everyone in the comments section are supporting that. Happy New Year and God bless you all out there, my fellow pickers, thrashers, strummers, and shredders.🎸❤☺🙏👍

I really like this lesson as a great example of mixing different note groupings. The biggest thing for me was although the first lick is relatively straightforward, I’d never move Pentatonic shapes on the 4th string like that. Just a slight variation on what I normally do but that feels really fluent. It’s so cool to shine new light on old windows!!

Just discovered your channel today and have only watched this video but I really like how you break the sections into easy to understand bites. I’ve always wanted to be able to whip out some stockish ascending and descending licks that cover more of the fret board than the 4 and 6’s in a box position. I say stock as in to add to my bag of tricks not as in boring. I’ve been playing for nearly thirty years with a good 15 to 16 year gap of not really practicing and progressing just whipping out an acoustic here and there but all the guitar content on KZbin has reignited the passion for guitar and I’ve been playing pretty seriously for the past 2 plus years. Thanks for taking the time to break this down for someone with very little theory can understand and implement. I couldn’t get my parents to buy me lessons growing up but had a couple friends that did take lessons and I was able to keep up them as far as what they could do by the guitar mags and what They would show me from their lessons but I always felt like I was holding on for dear life lol. We all three managed to challenge each other and competition drove us to get better. I still don’t really understand the positions of the fretboard but maybe if I hang around this channel it’ll come together eventually. Man I wish I had the resources when I started playing that beginners do today.

Note groupings and practice are often not given enough focus by the majority of players. Joe , Gary and Eric J are all really great exponents of playing odd groupings whilst keeping the notes they play simple. Great video Ross hopefully it will go a long way to making folks think twice about playing solos consisting of triplets and sixteenth notes only🤘🏻
