why is a Brit singing a American southern song, which would certainty be called "racist" today. I mean this song has nothing to do w/England at at all. I don't get it. Who is doing the "shuffling" in the song?

According to Wikipedia it was written in 1912 by a Russian emigree, a Tin Pan Alley writer making a living. Why can't anyone sing it? I can't understand what the problem is?!

@@johnnytenjobs Doesn't matter it is still an American topic song. Irving Berlin, born in Russia, raised in NYC, wrote God Bless America. How many Brits would sing that song? Joe Brown was making a mockery of that song.

@@estelleadamski308 So by that logic The Beatles and The Rolling Stones shouldn't have picked up any music that originated from Black America. Music is international. How about British 2-Tone. I grew up with that. Black and white bands taking Jamaican music and adapting it for a young British audience.

@@johnnytenjobs America is a melting pot from the world, that is why most of the music originated from here., RagTime, R&B, Blues, Jazz. Country. Honky Tonk, HillBilly, Swing, BoogieWoogie, etc. Yes, the Brits copied American Rock N Roll They did not invent it.

@@estelleadamski308 Joe Brown was part of the 1950s British skiffle scene. They all borrowed American Blues and other music from much earlier in the century in a home made and rather amateur style which the teenage market adored. The later 60's R&B guys polished the sound and sold it back the USA with some success. They picked up stuff which could be construed as problematic now but which was innocent at the time. Mick Jagger doesn't include Brown Sugar in live sets any more for obvious reasons.

I resent a Brit singing this song that is a personal to American's as it is of our history, not England, and then joking and laughing about talking about black people

What are you talking about? It's about a boat!!!!!!!!1

@@johnhodges8264 yes, a boat named after a confederate general who fought against the United States in the Civil War. What business is it of anyone in England to sing a song that is sensitive to Americans? It is none of their business, let them sing songs about their queen or something. Sing their OWN songs.

I see so we can’t sing songs by Elvis, Al Jolson, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby etc because. ‘YOU’ don’t like it last time I checked songs were written for anyone too enjoy, sing, or listen to.
