QBs beat opposing defenses. Tom Brady and Joe Burrow didn't BEAT Mahomes. Their defenses and our own receivers beat Mahomes.

the #1 thing that gives the Chiefs problems with the Bengals is that the Bengals have big athletic receivers who routinely win 1v1 matchups in press, and the Chiefs like to press and blitz. Whenever Burrow gets in trouble he just chucks it up to Chase or Higgins on the sideline and more often than not they come down with it even in heavy coverage.

For quarterbacks specifically, it comes down to two things I would say (aside from good fortune): 1. The HC/GM viewing the offensive line as a fundamental strength of the team. 2. The QB’s level of awareness and ability to avoid situations which increase the likelihood of injury. Matt Ryan was sorely let down in the first case, but he also knew when/how to take a hit.

Yes, there’ll be periodic regression, but if you allow decline to set in for multiple seasons it’s unlikely that the quarterback will overcome that. Mahomes has never had to contend with the 2020/2021 Falcons offensive line or Chicago’s, to name but two examples.

Yes the KC 2nd half collapse does suck though but it’s a lesson learned. That’s what is making the Chiefs a real NFL dynasty, winning these postseason games, going to these conference championships, and ultimately winning the whole thing. That statistic mean much less, considering its interdivisional and the browns dont and will never make it down the stretch. There are many freak occurrences within divisions where the worse team just seems to have the others number. Dont get me wrong, I give the browns credit, and it really comes down to the D line and they definitely match up well against cincy no doubt. But when it comes down to it being able to beat the chiefs is way more important when the time comes way down the stretch and you want to win a championship.

You know, that's probably exactly right...and there's nothing wrong with that. From the Bengals' perspective, KC is the mountain between them and the promised land. So *of course* they are continually building their team to beat KC. From the Browns' perspective, what's in their way? Bengals. If Cleveland builds themselves up to be the dominant team in that division, they'll probably start measuring themselves up against the Chiefs. That's a perfectly reasonable outlook, for both teams. And I say that as a KC fan who lives in MO. To my mind this quote from Burrow was honest, respectful, and frankly a huge compliment to KC. They *are* built to beat the chiefs, like Ford built the GT40 to beat Ferrari. In both cases, the dominant team ought to be flattered. Of course in 1964 and 1965 Ford lost all those battles (couldn't stay healthy!)...and I'm not betting on the Bengals' 2024 going like Ford's 1966. But that's what they've done: they built the team very intentionally with their top rival in mind. If he can stay healthy we should get some great games out of it. Bring it on.

They hit on some very high draft picks, had a qb on a rookie contract and been able to go sign free agents that fill holes in their roster. Let's see how they do paying their qb $50M and drafting late 20's early 30's in the draft. Veach 2022 draft was insane. Mcduffie, Karloftis, Moore, Cook, Chenel, William's, Watson, Kinnard, Pecheco, Johnson. Moore, Kinnard are flops, Johnson looked promising until season ending injury last year.

The AFC is by far the best division in football also with all top 10 defenses… so of course the bengals are going to lose to their other divisional opponents that’s kind of a silly argument to make, they don’t play in a cupcake AFC west which the chiefs lost to the broncos and raiders this season who are horrible and these teams still had a chance to win the West going into the last 2 weeks of the season. Burrow has played through a lot of injuries just as much as mahomes has so you obviously don’t pay attention which mahomes has really only played through an ankle injury. He’s had to sit out for a concussion and his dislocated knee cap so he doesn’t play through all of his injuries. Under pressure is a subjective stat line if you didn’t know that, it’s kinda like baseball and recording errors. And Burrow doesn’t have a HOF HC either so there that too.

Mahomes is the most clutch quarterback in NFL history when his team is down 10 or more. He’s 17-14 when his team is down 10 or That’s 54.8 % or 55%. That’s a higher percentage than Tom Brady and Joe Montana.

A significant factor in Burrow’s effectiveness is having two contested catch monsters to throw the ball up to in big moments and knowing the odds are Higgins or Chase will make a play. Mahomes has never had that.

Burrows injuries last season are concerning. He strained his calf with nobody around him and when he tore the ligament in his wrist nobody hit him. Bengals need to worry about their defense, which was terrible last season. They have 11 draft picks and need defense help. The Chiefs hit on all those picks on defense 2 drafts ago. They have 7 picks this draft. I predict 5 out of the 7 are on offense. If KC can win with the worst receiving corps imagine how they will perform with a good receiver room. Every season in sports, as in life, is different. It takes health and luck to win it all. I thought the strength of the Bengals team in 2022 was their defense. I read all these comments and am stunned by the discourse. Appreciate Joe, Patrick, and the league as a whole. We are fanatics but we are also football brothers and sisters.

I think Simms interviewed Burrow a couple years ago. Great interview as usual. Anyways Burrow is one of the smartest, if not the smartest, QBs in the league. So that presents problems for teams. Even teams that might be more talented can easily lose when you have Einstein Boy on the other side.

I just read that Joe Burrow IS 3-1 against Mahomes and the Chiefs. There aren’t many QBs who have Mahomes’ number and maybe Joe does. Mahomes certainly makes great plays and has a killer arm but I would say Joe Burrow is more fundamentally sound. Plus Joe is no slouch as a passer. The thing is though there are quite a few AFC teams that will challenge the Chiefs. The Texans. The Jags if Trevor turns things around. The Chargers will be interesting. The Ravens can’t buy a playoff win so probably not them. Hopefully the Bills make it to the Super Bowl but I’m not sold on the idea that Buffalo is “better” sans Diggs. But a healthy Joe Burrow should put the Fear of God into Chiefs fans because he’s a guy who’s shown he can do it.

Challenges to the Chiefs? The Chiefs are the the AFC. The Chargers won’t do anything their first year, Bills their entire team is depleted, the Dolphins just can’t beat physical defenses. Yes the Texans have a load of potential but not a lot of championship experience. It’s still the Chiefs until proven otherwise. And yes the 4 AFC North teams are all possible playoff teams.

The narrative from the media and the Cincy fans is that the Bengals won that AFCCG against because Burrow is awesome. Burrow played fine in that game but was hardly the difference maker. The hero(s) was the Bengal defense!! That game was trending towards a blowout before their defense stepped up and shut the Chiefs down. The Chiefs had scored TD's on three consecutive drives and were in a position to score on a likely game ending 4th TD right before halftime, yet all the credit was given to Burrow. The Chiefs had a poor defense particularly in the secondary that opposing teams regularly scored 30+points against so the key back then was stopping Mahomes. How this turn into something else if funny.

Chiefs defense has improved a lot since those first few match ups and bengals defense has lost key pieces. We'll see what happens with tee but im fairness bengals have been drafting well and burrow is elite, they are probably still the best threat to the throne for kc but using the past match ups as a reference is not the best guage.

Point is the iteration of the 2021 could be one of the better overall rosters they will have depending on how well they draft. Just like any team that has a superstar qb on a rookie contract, I'm sure they have a couple more cheap years on burrows deal but the bill is coming due in Buffalo this year for example. Bill has already came due in kc and is part of the reason they struggled on offense last year. I have no reason to believe that cincy won't draft well but one big miss really sets a team back with a huge qb contract.
