FROM THE QUEENSBERRY VAULT...
It's October 1997 and a 22-0 Joe Calzaghe takes on the legendary Chris Eubank for the vacant WBO World Super Middleweight Championship. This fight wasn't meant to happen. Calzaghe was supposed to be fighting Steve Collins, while Eubank was preparing for a light heavyweight contest against Mark Prince. With Collins' forced to retire, Calzaghe had 2 weeks to prepare for a new opponent and Eubank had 2 weeks to drop the weight.
This turned into a real 'changing of the guard' classic.

I watched every single Calzaghe fight and pretty much every televised fight ever as well so I can honestly say that Joe Calzaghe is one of the best but most underrated fighter in boxing. His record tells you how good he was and the fact that he had over 40 fights, won them all and doesn't even look like he's ever been a boxer tells you how good he was. Massive Big Up to Joe Calzaghe!!!

Only guy he has a chance against would be Duran, because Duran was a brawler and brawlers match poorly against Calzaghe. The other fighters you named would starch Calzaghe.
@peterpereira3653
@peterpereira3653 3 жыл бұрын
I doubt Leonard could actually stop Calzaghe inside the distance given he has been in with bigger punchers than Leonard.But Leonard has the boxing skills and hand and foot speed to win a decision.Duran just isn’t suited style for style against the bigger Calzaghe.Hearns maybe can outbox Calzaghe but then again he could get KOed by him too.Calzaghe before his chronic hand issues could definitely power punch with authority.Hagler out of the fabulous four would be the most likely to stop Calzaghe inside the distance but Calzaghe could definitely present problems for Hagler too. And Calzaghe would still be the naturally bigger man against any of the fabulous four, who would have had a punching power advantage and or speed and reach advantage over some of them, and a better work rate than any of them.Any boxer who can throw around 1,000 punches in a fight which Calzaghe did in several fights is going to present the opponent with problems just in reducing that kind of punch output.The punches don’t need to look pretty or land fully clean as Jeff Lacy found out himself if enough of those punches land they do take effect on the one being hit.The only one of the fabulous four I see winning relatively easily against Calzaghe is Leonard using similar tactics and strategy he used to defeat Hagler with.He has the speed advantages of both hands and foot speed.Throws maybe the best punch combinations ever seen by a boxer and has the footwork to get in and out of range before Calzaghe can land his own clusters of punches so thus negating Calzaghe punch output right there. And the height and reach differences can be overcome by the superior speed of Leonard.

Joe calzaghe has just got to be one of the most I would say easily top 5 most underrated and unrecognized of all time he's beaten some of the best of all time Bernard Hopkins Roy Jones jr. Jeff Lacy mikkel Kessler and of course Chris Eubank and that was towards the end of his career when he was well into his career the best of all was when he beat Roy Jones jr. And Bernard Hopkins at their own game give them a taste of their own medicine taunting them showboating but not taking it too far it's well he's like the Energizer Bunny he has an endless stamina throwing an average of 1000 punches over 12 rounds ridiculous!!

TheVillest what a fucking idiotic comment, boxers get to be past their best at various ages, some are great young but fade quickly (Naz, Mike Tyson) and some bloom later on (Mickey Ward, Chisora). Eubank was two years past his prime at this point and still had two tough fights at cruiser after this one. Calzaghe just caught him at the right time, story of his career. He beat three past it elite fighters (Eubank, RJJ and Hopkins), one in his prime (Kessler) and one that was totally overrated (Lacy). I still think Calzaghe was the real deal, but I think he would’ve struggled against the Eubank that beat Benn.

Prime Eubank handily beats Joe at this point in his career. Joe fought nobodies up to this point. Prime Eubank vs Prime Joe, it's a contest. I think Eubank still wins. The only thing I have trouble with is identifying when Joe was in his prime, other than by age. His career was odd in that it took him forever to fight anyone good and he fought them all at the end of their careers.
@danyoutube7491
@danyoutube7491 11 ай бұрын
@@thatguythatdoesstuff7448 I don't think Eubank would ever beat him, he was very tough but not as skilled or wily as Calzaghe, not to mention the balance of speed and punch output was always in the Welshman's favour. Eubank did well to last this whole fight and had his moments but it wasn't at all close a decision, and it would not have been greatly different in Eubank's prime in my opinion. Regarding Joe's prime, this was probably his prime in terms of punching power and perhaps general fitness, but he obviously wasn't as experienced as he became later, and he became a better boxer later on I think. If Calzaghe had slightly better European competition, perhaps Benn or Eubank in their prime, it would have brought up his standard faster (in particular I think it would have spurred him to be less of a brawler and sharpen his boxing skills against more dangerous and skilful opponents than he fought for the most part in his early years) and he might have been able to take on a prime Roy Jones or Hopkins. My instinct is that he would have lost, at least to Jones just because he was such a ridiculous phenomenon, but perhaps he could have beaten or drawn with Hopkins. The actual fight with Hopkins was marred by the many borderline (and sometimes clearly over the line) illegal and unsporting behaviour of Hopkins, and I think he would have been more confident to fight Calzaghe in a less cagey fashion had he been younger. Calzaghe himself was getting long in the tooth by then, and not as dynamic as we see him in this late 90s era. He wanted to fight these better fighters by the way, but they weren't interested because his name was not a draw in America until he beat Lacy (apparently he got part way through negotiations with Hopkins, but Hopkins' people were offering a very low percentage to Calzaghe and they didn't seem very keen on making the fight happen. I think Joe was seen as good enough to be a risk to face but not a big commercial draw to compensate for that risk, so the biggest names weren't realistically available to him at that stage). Another nice scenario in my opinion would be to have Froch come in a few years earlier and so be a realistic proposition for Calzaghe, I think it would have been an interesting contest. Certainly Froch was tough and not an easy prospect, given his ranginess and decent power and the fact that Calzaghe struggled a bit with tall guys (like Kessler), but as with Kessler I think Calzaghe would have adapted to any problems posed and would have beaten Froch. It would have been entertaining though, I don't doubt that.

goods win for joe considering joe was just brit level in the 90s, even though eubank was coming off a string of years of big losses and from 2 divisions away in just one week. eubank still had good chin at this point, even when weight weakened, even though he had no interest in winning.

@@peterpereira3653 because it wasnt even the division he wanted to be in. once in the ring, he liked to scrap. But prep is 90% of winning a fight, he wasnt prepped with 2 weeks notice dropping 2 divisions. Still joes best win until the controversial win/draw with reid

He wanted that wbo to pretend he was the actual champ and act like people were dodging him. When in reality he had to chase them. They were the a side with more prestigious titles. Joe's career is a well timed, cherry picked run that shows if you carefully manage a career and avoid all risks you can achieve great things.

@@meandmynine_tm9684 as much as i like joe and his boxing style... i cant argue with what you just said. he decided to fight name guys in the last 5/6 fights. unfortunately guys who were over the hill. after he fought eubank there was about a 15 fight stretch where he fought virtually nobody's with the exception of byron mitchell who was basically just a name and nowhere near the level of joe
