Definitely a quick stoppage, but Manfredo hadn't been competitive up to that point. When Calzaghe started lighting him up, you can't blame the ref for deciding there was no sense letting the guy take a continued beating, when it was clear to everyone there how the fight was going to end.

@@pearcemark2 you could play that out 100 times, and Peter would sustain lifelong damage in at least 30-40 of them and won't win 1. It was an exhibition bout for a television series, that basically pitted an amateur against one of the greatest SMWs of all time; a man that schooled RJJ for 10 rounds! If you pay attention, you'll see that Joe's holding back the first round and quite frankly looking bored bout it, until he gets the green light to finish the fight. Both corners knew what was happening; the judges knew what's happening; the ref knew; and even the winner of said TV series knew what was going on, because he refused the fight... Yeah, Peter didn't even win The Contender. If you're thinking Joe may get tired, he never did. He threw hands like that until the 12th of his last fight at 36yo. And if you're thinking that Peter could just keep his hands up for 11 rounds. No, that wouldn't have lasted the 2nd round. Because some shots always slip through, and your arms can only sustain so much punishment, before you can no longer raise them.

@@chrisg9615 Apples and Oranges. First off, the ropeadope wouldn't've worked on Calzaghep; he doesn't tire. Secondly, Ali was returning, whereas Peter wasn't. Thirdly this was an exhibition bout between a fresh pro vs a hall-of-famer; it was dangerous and stupid from concept. Different era. Different stakes. Different ref. Different promoters... It's just a bad comparison.

People act like that's all calzaghe throws are soft punches or slaps, but little do they realize he's timing perfectly placed hard punches during those flurries. Not only do the fast punches score points they help establish his rhythm, throw the opponent off their rhythm and create openings for those harder more damaging shots. Ask Jeff Lacy if those punches by calzaghe feel like slaps.
