I love Joe Cocker's interpretation of this song written by Steve Winwood and Will Jennings. He has taken his vocals down a notch and his voice is smoother with a nice swing added to it, along with the soul sound that is in all of his songs. The sax adds richness and edge. It highlights to me once again what a great singer Joe Cocker was and one of the best ever. Sorry he left us but his music lives on and I have great memories. RIP Joe.

Just off to bed....but simply had to add another Joe Cocker absolute favourite before I go. He will be genuinely missed by all those who loved his voice,his music,his songs. In the ensuing weeks and months he will fade a little in the news but in the memories of those who simply adored him he will never fade in any way whatsoever. He may have left us but he will still be Talking Back To The Night and letting us all know he was too special to have ever really gone. Lovely,unique,unassuming Joe Cocker with his endearing personality in how he gave us his songs.

Joe Cocker had the ability that few others possessed of being able to take a song written by another artist and making it his own. Another singer overlooked by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...RIP .

Coool version, never heard this before, knew only the one from the Winwood album, discovery! also captivating! what I say is, a good song remains a good one. The performers express it and put them alive in different ways.

This version actually came out a few months before Winwood's, and I actually heard it a lot on an Albany radio station. This version is leaner and less synthesized than Steve's with real bass and lead guitar. And, of course, Joe's voice. I put this one, Steve's original and the 1987 remix hit in my Winwood playlist. Thanks for the upload!
@Cyclon3228910 жыл бұрын
How can this came before winwood's if it's a cover lol.
@trfesok10 жыл бұрын
Dario Pendrive Well, it did! I consider it a cover because he didn't write it.
@trfesok8 жыл бұрын
Yes, it did. I heard it on the radio before Steve's album was released.
@marksaunders30478 жыл бұрын
+Dario Pendrive and Devin Roberts, trfesok is correct in saying that Joe Cocker's version came out before Steve Winwoods. Cocker got the jump on Winwood by releasing his version of Talking Back To The Night, which incidentally was written by Steve Winwood and his writing partner Will Jennings in May 1982, off the album Sheffield Steel. Winwood release his version in September 1982 from the album off the same name but was a commercial flop. Winwood re-released the single in 1988, from the Chronicles album but as a remix version which proceeded to peak number 9 on the billboard singles chart.

The vocals are unusually subdued for Ol' Joe. I'd say Steve's version is better but this is a close second. His backup is excellent.

Never heard this, but a long time fan of Winwood's song......this does not suck. It is different, but with the same vibe, and that is OK with me.
@joeclements52288 жыл бұрын
It is the more insistent drum beat that is different from Winwood's version. Joe was a drinking friend of mine in the old days and he turned me on to Traffic, hence Winwood, the finest UK singer, songwriter, multi instrument musician of my era.

OMG. This sounds absolutely horrible Steve Winwood.. save this song. Don't get me wrong I like Joe Cocker. But this is just awful. It makes me physically sick just listen to this. He sounds like he's drunk at the pub.

This is not very good sorry to say.. I'm a huge Joe Cocker fan too, but this doesn't even compare to the original Winwood version.. Winwood's voice is MEANT for this song, it's HIS song, and it shows, Cocker ain't stealin that one!!!
@JenniferBtheGroove7 жыл бұрын
I have been a fan of Steve Winwood since he was 15years old playing in the Spencer Davis Group (Keep On Running and other hits), and then Traffic, Blind Faith etc....I love Stevie......but I have to agree Prok Chambers....Joe Cocker's version is better than Stevie's version
