If you can carry along a passion for film from youth to adulthood, you have won half the battle. Thanks, Illeana Douglas and Joe Dante from all the "monster kids" (like me) who grew up with 1950s Sci-Fi movies.

Matinee is a special favorite of mine, too. When you see the choppers and "When the Lion Sleeps Tonight" comes on the soundtrack at the end you realize/remember that all those kids were at an age that not many years after the events in the film they'd be facing Vietnam. Such an understated, wise social commentary, I think, giving the film a sneaky, subtle emotional impact without disturbing the fun one bit.

That was a crazy story how he once made a movie without the ending and asked the audience how it should end. Hope that doesn't become a new thing in Hollywood :-)
