He moved to France at 10 years old with his Parents. His dad was a member of the Communist party of America so he had to moved to France to continue his film career.

Mr Dassin vous pouvez parler dans n'importe quelle langue tu as quelque chose dans la voix qui ne peut rester impossible à reproduire déjà les Français les imitateurs ne savent pas reproduire ta voix pourtant tu as une voix de baryton bass je comprends pas qu'ils puissent faire que de très mauvaises imitations à tel point que si la musique est bien là quand à la voix zéro

Comme j appréciais Joe pour son intelligence , sa finesse d esprit, son éducation, sa classe et l Artiste qu’il était ne pouvait donc qu être à cette image ! Joe could have broken into U.S. show business had he tried a lot earlier in his career. I think that at the ripe age of 42 he was at ease with himself as far fame and expansion were concerned. RIP. Joe .

His English was surprisingly good considering he spent the majority of his life in France.

But he was an American and this never changed. He has written five novels during the time he was a student at University of Michigan and all were written in English. For one of them he received a Hopwood award, in 1958.
