I can't count how many times I have seen Joe play live when I lived in Austin in the 80's. He was there often and has alway been one of my favorites. I named my truck Loretta.

Rented my first house in Lubbock when Joe and Butch Hancock moved out of it. 1971. Jimmie Dale Gilmore had the little house next door. That old house is long gone, but those guys were instrumental in my music experience. House is gone, memories remain. Thanks guys!!

Not just Lubbock, the whole state has produced more great singer / songwriters than any other state! I am constantly amazed at the talent Texas has given us!

The best was watching and hearing Joe, Jesse and Lloyd. RIP Jesse.

Joe Jesse and Lloyd were the original band. I am fortunate to have seen them around Lubbock when I didn't even realize the great band. I was only 19 in 1971, and a transplant from the East coast. Damn.

Met Joe in Lubbock in 1971 when I was sent there in the AF. I came from the East coast and didn't realize all the awesome music coming from that area. OMG He and Butch and Jimmy still tour.

Met Joe in 1971 when the AF sent me to Lubbock. He and Butch Hancock moved out of a house they rented and I moved in. Jimmie Dale Gilmore lived next door. I learned alot.

Well you can call out the sheriff and the highway patrol There's a fool on the road careening out of control Hard liquor, fast women, Lord, I can't leave 'em be I wish hard livin' didn't come so easy to me. I keep my engine revin' and my beer on ice My idea of heaven is a pair 'a dice Come on seven come eleven, set this poor boy free! I wish hard livin' didn't come so easy to me. Bright lights, Saturday night I had me a little you know I feel all right My cupcake, she can shimmy and shake Spends more money any fool can make So give a shot of cocktail juice Ain’t no cure for the Honkytonk blues If they come up with something I’ll be living up in immunity And I wish hard livin' didn't come so easy to me. Ahh pick it Joe When my tires are flat and I'm out of gas I promise myself I'll let the next one pass I wish that a promise didn't break so easily I wish hard livin' didn't come so easy to me

He's not quite as energetic as he was back in the '70's, but I think his voice is even better. Kind of amazing that little old Lubbock, Texas produced both Joe Ely and Buddy Holly (among others) -- must be something in the water out there ...

You can buy a Shure Sm58, a Taylor T5, and some beautifully distressed boots.... but not in a million years can you do with them what Joe Ely can do with them.

The time changes are not that easy. Try clapping in 4/4, and tapping your foot in 3/4. A good drummer could. I think Joe could.
