I met Joe Frazier one time in the Philadelphia airport. What a nice guy, took time to talk with a nobody and gave me his signature. One shake of his hand and I knew right away why he was the champ.

I'm a Joe fan. Ali was an ass. Joe tried to help Ali and spent his own money and efforts to help Ali get back into boxing and then Ali talked some vicious crap about Joe. Joe was a class act, man. I recognize Ali as a great boxer. Maybe the greatest. But Joe was a terrific boxer and also a good human.

When the British TV show "This Is Your Life" honored Muhammad Ali in 1978, one of the final guests, which came as a complete surprise to Ali, was Joe Frazier. Frazier walked out on stage with a smile a mile long, happy to be there, happy to see Ali, and he turned a great event into an even greater event. And honestly, Ali didn't deserve Frazier's presence, and he probably knew it. Not after the horrible things he'd said about Frazier for years on end. But Frazier was the bigger man on that day in 1978, and he probably taught Ali something about humility as well, hopefully making Ali a better person for it.

I saw that show on KZbin and you can tell Ali was happy to see Joe and was humbled by his presence. When Joe told a story about the 2 setting up the first fight in Joe's car Ali was just tickled by Joe story. Joe was a great champion and a great man. Ali I bet wished he didn't say all those terrible things.

It was not Ali's individuality that made him so famous but his ability to connect to other humans and his ability to change, and I believe definitely changed a lot from the man who insulted Joe Frazier.

Great point, didn't see it that way. Most fighters would've paraded with the belt & left the true champion to fend for his self. Look at what's going on today. The best fighters are hesitant to fight. So they sure as hell wouldn't bail each other out to fight them. Frazier was a true champion. Essentially freed Ali just so he could beat him and PROVE he's the real champ

Joe Frazier to me is what I imagined boxing as a kid, a sportsman who doesn't speak much, driven by his relentless will wether if it is fueled by anger, frustration, determination or to overcome his adversities. Though to me, the greatest martial artists stayed humbled throughout their lives, master of their crafts who doesn't get changed by fame or wealth and Joe Frazier was one of them... In 1960, JFK became the first "made for TV" President and Ali became the first "made for TV" Boxer. It was Ali who started all the Trash Talk and antics in the ring that was to go one to influence many other Boxers in the future. It was with Ali that Boxing became less of a Sport and more of a Performance, a little like what happened in Pro Wrestling. But the promoters knew how to get more SUCKERS to buy more tickets, even SUCKERS who had never been interested in Boxing before. Their trick was to give the audience a "Show" rather than a straight "Sporting Event". Ali was the one who started "Boxing as a Performance" and today, at age 73, I'm convinced that his "act", his "performance" Was NOT just of his own invention. Someone behind the scenes had written Ali's script for him, perhaps some Powerful and Smart men behind the scenes who already knew how much money could be made from this new thing called TV. All you needed was avery talented boxer whose Big Mouth and childish antics make a Tidal Wave of SUCKERS gladly open up their wallets for that Egomaniac disguised as a Boxer named Ali. And Ali's Egomania was a template for all the Egomaniacs to follow in his wake, "Showmen" like Leonard, Macho Camacho and lately Boxers like Tyson Fury. Ali was really the WORST Thing to happen to the History of Boxing. So much so that fans called the more recent Champion Klitschko brothers from Ukraine "boring" because they still saw Boxing as a Sport and NOT At All as a Performance or an Act of any type. In my personal opinion, Joe Frazier was the real life version of Rocky. Yes, I know Chuck Wepner was the inspiration, but come on. Joe's from Philly, he trained in a slaughterhouse he worked at by punching meat, he ran the steps of the Philly museum, he defeated the goat, and he was known for having the biggest heart in all of boxing. He's Rocky. Or better yet, Rocky is Joe.

To me, Joe's second greatest fight, right behind his victory over Ali, was the Foreman fight. To get knocked down 6 times by the heaviest most vicious punches any boxer ever absorbed (one Foreman punch launched Joe's entire body off the ground), and to get up 6 times ready to fight some more was the most champion thing I ever saw in life. To this day. As pure boxing goes, he became my all time favorite that night. Love you, Smokin Joe. You're #1 in my book.

After the Thriller in Manilla Muhammad Ali called for Joe's son Marvis. He said to him he was sorry for the hurt he had caused their family, and to tell his father that he didn't mean the things he had said. It was an olive branch. Marvis told his father, and Frazier said no, why doesn't he say those things to me, why doesn't he apologise to me. A complicated relationship, and it's easy to see that moment from both sides. Ali respected Frazier, he just didn't pay him that respect in public. For Joe Frazier, as a straightforward and proud man, sentiment was all well and good but simply had to be backed up by man to man, face to face respect.

As a kid I rooted for Ali including his bouts vs. Frazier. As I got older with better knowledge of facts and understanding the ways of the world, my respect for Frazier grew exponentially. I prefer Frazier and it makes me angry how poorly Ali treated Frazier even after Frazier went out of his way to help Ali including lending him money when Ali was broke. Frazier's legacy is strong, but I think he deserves a higher rating given his many big wins, quality of opponents during a golden era of HW boxing, his smaller/shorter size and reach in a tough HW division. He was also nearly blind in one eye. Despite his short height and reach, Frazier exerted extreme pressure on his opponents, wading forward, bobbing and weaving to close the distance. Once inside, Frazier would throw viciously powerful hooks and upper cuts. Absolutely brutal body puncher. He beat Ali badly in their first fight and that was Ali in his prime when everyone felt that Ali was perhaps the greatest boxer ever. Frazier dominating Ali in their first fight is how I remember Frazier and not the beating he took vs. George Forman. Frazier was the epitome of toughness (mental & physical) and personal character. RIP Joe!

I, like many, was mesmerised by Ali 'performance'. But, 'How poorly Ali treated Frazier'?!...the man couldn't keep his mouth shut from spitting incessant insults at Frazier. Joe was an extremely SMALL heavyweight, even by 1970 standards. The standard heavyweight was around 6’3, 220 lbs. Joe was a dwarf by comparison at 5’10 and a weight that might go as low as 190 lbs. That small man humbled many giants. Hat tip to you, Joe.

Frazier was not an all time great,he was trouble for Ali and that was it. He ducked an old Sonny Liston Ernie Shavers and Ron Lyle for starters. He beat two tomato cans in his only title defenses and was nearly beaten twice by a very pedestrian Bonevena. I do think that style wise Tyson was a super charged version of Frazier who would have iced Ali in later rounds or beat Ali in a very lobsided decision. Mike had a much better defense than Joe and hit way harder and faster.

A sports illustrated reporter accidently left a recorder running and was talking to Ali at the time of his refusal and Ali said on the recording that he just wanted to make money and not fight in war. The whole doing it for Asains or blacks was a lie as most of Ali's legacy was a lie, Ali had the right not to go but his pretending to be a hero and proclaimed hero for his stand when he was just a coward is pathetic and tells you Ali was just faking as always.

Good stuff. Frazier could not possibly match hand speed with Ali. So, he had to get inside. And just keep on coming. It worked in the first fight, but Joe took the beating of his life but won anyway. His face looked like an ugly Halloween mask. Welts, swollen. His life was at stake in the hospital. Ali was a dangerous heavyweight prize fighter who could kill an average man with his lighting fast hands. The hideous beating Ali dished out after a THREE-YEAR LAYOFF was unbelievable. No other man on earth could do that to Joe. None. Ali won the second fight, and the third fight was one for the ages. Nothing but love and respect for both fighters. ❤❤❤

Excellent presentation! I've read many books on boxing and the one episode that sticks in my mind is how badly Ali treated Frazier after Frazier not only helped Ali get his boxing licence back but also lent him funds to survive! What Ali did to Fraizer was unforgivable. Only a real man like Fraizer could forgive such betrayal. Unlike so many champions who became champions because of God given talents, Fraizer became a champion because he paid his dues and earned every fight he won, and lost. He was and will probably remain the most unappreciated and underrated heavyweight champion in history with, perhaps, the exception of Lennox Lewis, whose career seems to have been an eerie replay of the Joe's struggle for the cruel and fickle hearts of boxing fans. But, as anyone who has ever had to fight an opponent so adored and enamoured by his fans that they see you as no more than a bug to be crushed under their hero's foot, it is that hero's respect that matters the most. Joe Fraizer earned that respect the day he beat Ali where it counted the most: in the ring. RIP Mr Fraizer, for you earned your place as a champion and there are many who will always remember you for that.

It's extremely hypocritical and ungrateful. Fraizer helped him, only for Ali to try to use Joe head as a springboard while saying "later, loser". It completely torpedos the mythic persona of Ali as this great man of virtue. Like you can make the argument that Ali was just selling the fight, but the counterpoint to that is that if Ali really cared about his fellow blacks and how they're looked at by the rest of the world, then maybe he wouldn't try to destroy public perception of another black man who objectively came from even worse circumstances just to squeeze even more money out of the media circus. Joe frazier is my favorite heavyweight of all time, he was TRULY relentless til the end, even when he was nearly out on his feet and had no clue where he was he was still tryna throw that left hook, he'd get hit with the force of a freight train and stand right back up before the ref got to 3. Actually Ali was ahead on the scorecards in the thrilla of Manilla. However, Ali was about to quit on his chair and not go in to the 15th round but Fraziers coach didn’t let Frazier go on and surrendered before Ali quit

I’ve always been a fan of Joe Frazier and preferred is slick style as an in fighter more so than Ali’s beautiful Float Like A Butterfly Sting Like A Bee method… Joes style was so much more in depth and contained so much simple intricacies than what others could see within his style!!!! As a young teen and I’m only 26 now I’m still madly in love with his in fighting style!!! With all of that being said this is one of the most in death documentaries I’ve ever seen about joe!!! Feeling his energy through this is an amazing feeling so thank you!!!!

I'm 45 years old born in 1977. As for me I'll always look at smokin Joe as top five heavyweight champs of all time. Totally underrated and totally disrespected by Muhammad Ali. I get it he was trying to make money but it's a shame the way he went about it Muhammad Ali that is. Muhammad Ali regretted doing that. Unfortunately Joe Frazier never forgave him, can't say I blame him. I always thought Tyson reminding me a lot of Frazier. That compact Cobra ready to strike in a moment's notice. There's no doubt in my mind that if you trace Joe Frazier's lineage it would lead to the great gladiators of the Roman times.

Ali lit a fire inside of Frazier that never died, and even though Frazier was blind in one eye he still commanded respect and if you didn't give it to him he would take it from you in the ring. That's exactly what happened with Ali too, Frazier earned that respect from a guy that didn't just give it to anyone!!! Frazier will ALWAYS be champ to me!!!

This is a very good mini-doc. It certainly evokes my compassion for Mr. Frazier, and I love his philosophical statement about being "alone" whether on the road training or in the ring. The footage of those left hooks is truly riveting, and Joe is a very respectful human being (with a talent for boxing).

Phenomenal documentary, one of the best I have ever seen, to the point it nearly got me teary eyed at how you made the distinction on Joe being his own man, champion and all time great, rather than simply Ali's nemesis, like many list him as. Love your accurate commentary and the detail that many, many people would miss. Plus your voice is so appropriately authentic. People are very quick to note Ali's 3 and a half year lay off before he got dismantled by Frazier in fight 1 but they rarely recognise that he was legally blind in one eye and Ali swelled up the other to the point he was effectively fighting on instinct and not sight, in the final rounds of Manilla, which is why I am so pleased you comment specifically on that. Notice how he couldn't even see the shots to avoid them and yet still he was finding some success against a rallying Ali in rounds 13-14. One of the GOATs and my all time favourite boxer. A champion in and out of the ring. Wonderful to see him getting more appreciation.
