In ‘84 or maybe it was ‘85 I went down to Barry Harris’ Jazz Cultural Theatre to play at a Tuesday night jam session for the first time. I was apprehensive but ready to take whatever was gonna happen so I played a blues and felt ok about it, followed by a second tune that didn’t go well. Kim Clarke had an open mike near her and said……”well you didn’t know that one ….did you!” I went to every jam session Tuesdays and Thursdays (occasionally Saturdays) for as long as the place was still open. I caught some great classes given by Barry Harris and loved the vibe, the workshop nature of it all….and it didn’t take long for Kim to smile and say hello most nights. I’d work hard to build up a repertoire and the beginnings of improvisational thinking too. Kim calling me out at my first session kept me going like no one else anywhere ever….thanks Kim!

Keith Kilgo was also a member of the famous funk-jazz group, The Blackbyrds-and this is an excellent set-all the musicians are in top form-really impressed with upright bassist Kim Clarke also, and seeing/hearing this video is a reminder of the reason why I began to embrace and fall in love with jazz decades ago, after being into funk and r&b for over two decades! I saw it was time for a change-in terms of the musical direction I felt I needed to personally to go in, to go to the next level-and have no regrets for having done so...but it's been a rough road, and "nothing worthwhile comes easy" I've always heard, but that's another story in itself-ciao! 8-17-24.

If they didn't make an album from this performance, they should have.
