Recorded Live: 13 July 1996 - North Sea Jazz Festival 1996 - Jan Steen Zaal
McCoy Tyner: Piano
Michael Brecker: Tenor saxophone
Avery Sharpe: Bass
Aaron Scott: Drums
Setlist:
0:00:11 - Changes
0:14:31 - Mellow Minor
0:27:30 - Where is Love
0:39:28 - Have You Met Miss Jones
0:45:17 - Impressions
We have to keep the music alive! I’m happy to share this full concert recording only broadcasted once on Dutch television. This was my first McCoy Tyner concert to attend live and I was completely blown away by it. Recorded on S-VHS tape so I happily spent a few days restoring and optimizing the audio :-)
I think this entire concert is genius, but please note this version of Where is Love. Just after McCoy started his intro (27:30) for some reason Michael Brecker walks from stage. McCoy, not fully aware of this, suddenly finds that Michael is no longer there to play the melody (29:04). At this moment I'm completely caught up in how this will go on and a little surprised McCoy extends his intro.
Of course the intro has to come to an end now, the surprise for McCoy remains and he asks Avery if he wants to go solo, but he says “no”. The melody starts and what McCoy plays at 30:54 is in my opinion like an unconscious reflex of one of the greatest pianist of all time. For McCoy, playing the piano is like walking, largely subconscious. This allows him to be focused unimpeded on his feeling and expression thereof without technical limitations.
Then Michael returns (31:12) and McCoy smoothly switches back to accompanying, just as easy but refined. Having seen McCoy Tyner live, will remain incredible memories.
Enjoy!

It is such a blessing to have these musical giants in my musical life. It was an even greater blessing to have seen them at various times in my lifetime. By the time Brecker was ready for Tyner, they fit like a glove and blew the doors off everything they played.

McCoy Tyner carried the spirit of John Coltrane, and has long been an inspiration to me as a pianist. Michael Brecker, another giant of jazz (and he's not even black!) R.I.P. both of these special souls.

About the comment " Just after McCoy started his intro (27:30) for some reason Michael Brecker walks from stage. McCoy, not fully aware of this, suddenly finds that Michael is no longer there to play the melody..", clearly at 27:25 Brecker is ready to go, far before Mc Toy Tyner had begun to play, Brecker was a great professionnal, not a lunatic man on stage. At this level everything is planned.

For me, the pairing of McCoy Tyner with Michael Brecker is the perfect combination. Tyner's earlier collaboration with Joe Henderson didn't work too well. That is because Tyner was a far nore advanced musician than Henderson. Specifically, Tyner often makes rapid chromatic alterations and plays 'outside' the tonal centre - Joe Henderson had no clue how this was done, whereas for Michale Brecker playing 'outside' is as natural as breathing. I daresay non-jazz players will not understand what is meant by this, but any musicians who are well versed in modern and contemprary jazz will know precisely what I'm talking about here. Whilst in some respects a liking for certain music and musicians is merely a matter of personal taste, from the POV of anyone who knows how to analyse music, there are some very clear means by which to evaluate the quality of someone's playing and their improvisational abilities. So, yes Coltrane and Tyner made a great team together, but for me Brecker brings an even more fruitful, coherent and complete package to the table which in combination with Tyner represents the pinnacle of post-bop musicianship.

Not a fan of the Brecker ego. He must realize he is the least of the masters here. How in the he you gonna out play The Maestro with just technique. Ya gotta stay in a humble spirit.

Huh? He is just being himself. You ever meet Michael Brecker? He’s as humble as they come. You’re confusing technique with ego. They aren’t the same thing.

Albert, McCoy said in an interview that Brecker is the modern version of Coltrane. Brecker was as humble as they come. Listen to the Brecker brothers in Spain concert. His solo on skunk funk is god like. Different than anything coltrane, bird, potter, ever could come close to.

Without the shoulders of the likes of Bird, John Coltrane, Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and many others to stand on, Michael Brecker woud have played- what? You suppose MB would have invented/developed Bebop, Hard Bop and Modal Jazz single handedly? In music as well as in the field of engineering, there are many who perfected things, but few who came up with original ideas. Brecker for my taste much to often goes on a tour de force, showing off his prowess. He just knew he was too late to be a real innovator, so he aimed to be the perfectionist. I'm simplifying of course, but hey, this is just a comment on youtube after all. To each his own. I'm perfectly fine with you praying to Brecker.
