Joe Henderson was one of the top tenor players - never receiving the recognition due. He could play anything - a rare giant in his own right.

Joe Henderson is the only tenor saxophonist in the same orbit with the great John Coltrane. A complete musician with technical ability to spare. His mode for joe and in an out are two of the great jazz recordings of that period. Thank you Kenny dorham for introducing the jazz World to the great Joe Henderson.

@@josephgutkowski2059 to my ears - Booker Ervin could belong there. Wayne Shorter certainly belongs as a composer. Land and Jordan - at least according to what I heard until today - don’t give me the same level of excitement (of the two - CJ is closer)

The youngsters today, as good as they truly are, still cannot match the dynamics on their horns like the Masters of the fifties and sixty's. Joe and Stan (Getz) are two prime examples............ today's players can blast you with a "thousand notes" and "runs" but fail to tell a musical story like you hear right here LIVE !!!!! EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mind blowing, this must indeed be some of the best jazz ever recorded. Joe Henderson is truly amazing, but let's not forget Kenny Drew Sr. who was one of the outstanding pianists at that time. It's also hard to believe that Tootie Heath is the only living survivor of this quartet.

Trio is one of the great trios of that period. Kenny is one of a few pianist that I would track in a classroom with Wynton. Niels was developing into a monster; and Tooie has always been one of the most underrated drummers. This was Dexter’s Band during this period!!! Joe takes no prisoners. Being there in his presence leaves one in bewilderment and respect for an unique and additional outlay of tenor creativity. Also, recorded shortly after Joe leftMiles’ Band.

@@josephgutkowski2059 music is also a symbol. Bach is pure music, but also German and Central European music. This music here is open to the world, incorporates many musical traditions, as synthesized in the black American community. So while the music itself is very hybrid, its origins are in a very specific community.

The only thing wrong with Joe Henderson is nothing , and that is what's wrong with him, he has everything all the ideas, all the story , all the history, all the technique, all the passion and its really enjoyable to listen to. No one else has that - presumably this is why he wasn't more influential , I guess you'd want to emulate someone who has something you could add to.
