Joe Madureira and Humberto Ramos are hands down my favorite artists. Both of their styles are so unique.

I absolutely love Joe's work, along with Jim Lee they were the 2 biggest inspirations in my own art career, but esp Joe who's work I fell in love with back in the days he was working on X-Men. Im lucky to enough to own all of his line of Battle Chaser comics and own nearly all of the comics he has pencilled through his career. As a young artist I spent hundreds of hours drawing any character I could think of in his style. The thing that makes Joe's work so great is that its like I see each panel he has drawn like its animated, especially his fight scenes, they're so dynamic they feel like single animation cell from a movie. But also his understanding of the characters especially the Marvel guys: the way they hold themselves, for example the way he draws Logan with that slight stoop contrasting from someone like Cyclops who is always standing up straight, chest puffed out, or his Spiderman always looking dynamic and energetic, never still unless he is simply interacting normally with other heroes then Joe manages to portray Peter's youth in the way he holds himself - check out the page where he gets all nervous meeting Elektra in Savage Wolverine issue 6, page 11. One of the most amazing aspects of his work is that despite the exaggeration of anatomy his understanding of it is second to none. His anatomy and the way the muscles move and change shape according to different positions and poses is unbelievable and I have learned more from Joe's anatomy than any text book or diagram. Those key aspects along with his understanding of composition, light and storytelling is why for me he will always be my favourite artist period. Just wish he was more active and doing more sequential work, the guy is an incredible talent, he inspired a generation of artists.

Extremely organic rendering, can't think of anyone doing these stylized shapes and lines with the same quality.

I would say that Max Dunbar has a similar approach.

I wasnt that into JoeMad when he first started. I loved the Deadpool mini he did, but once he got on X-Men it was more cartoony than how he drew in the DP mini series, so I wasnt as excited for the first half of his run on X-Men,. But right around after they returned from the Age of Apocalypse that i saw a turn in Mad's art that caught my eye again. Battlechasers was just another level of awesomeness that made me a lifelong fan.

Your video on joe mad is awesome rich . I remembered discovering joe mad after being stressed out being a slave to the anime art style in high school . Joe mad inspired me to embrace the anime/manga art style but mix it with some American comics art style from reading how to draw comics the marvel way and over the years my art gets better over the years all thanks to joe mad. \m/

I was such a fan of Joe Mad back in the day. This vid sure brings back some memories when I was combing all the comic shops looking for anything Joe pencilled. Had some opportunities to buy some of his original art but passed over the price tag. Still kicking myself...Those pieces would be worth a mint now. Thanks for posting, Rich, and stay safe.

MAD! is a fantastic stylist. One of my favourite comics from the nineties was his Age of Apocalypse run, only years later after reading Battlechasers did I realise it was him he drew that just from looking at the art alone. His style and energy is so specific to him.

Rich, this kind of deep analysis, including your overlays, is what you should do more often. It really helps understanding what it actually is, that makes this art pop.

Joe's one of the best ever been. He came at a time when I had my doubts about continuing my own shit. I compose stuff for the enjoyment of trying to outdo my own demented mind''s eye. He';s one of the few artists I sat back after seeing his stuff on the X-men, which I regularly don't and didn't buy, and said this guy's just about the perfect comic book artist. From the generation that also produced Scot Mcdaniel who I think is another unsung master of the medium. Scott's stuff on Nightwing is without peer. Doo a vid on him freind.

This is all great. I still try to understand what happened to those guys back in the 90's. One got millionaire on issue 1 he did for image , and the book started to get late, because he was playing bass guitar all day long. The other one quited comics because his dream, was to be a videogame star, and he never finished the work he started and nobody was hired to fill in and finish the story. I felt betrayed, because it was hard to get his book in Brazil. The vultures from comic shops would triple the price of the cover and in my currency the price was "mad". When they shot strait from pencils it annoys me to a point that it ruins the experience. Maybe because I used to be an inker, that is just me. The editors they have to stop being in a hurry all the time, just do stuff in the proper way. Sorry for the long text.

I remember from your Comicon video that he draws small. Do you happen to know what size his pages are? I really struggle to draw big enough for 11x17
@RichardFriendartist4 жыл бұрын
He only did that for his pencil only marvel work after BC. Battle Chasers was drawn 11x17
@slydiesel994 жыл бұрын
I think later in his career he still drew on 11x17 bristol board but he would turn it on it's side and do two pages on that one piece of board.

New comer artist need to learn to be self inspiring in their art style And learn art style technique what work and don't on paper with drawing tool. JOE MADUREIRA,JIM LEE, and other high profile artist didn't get free lunch. work at your space with self inspiration. In my life experience before the internet there were similar artist that never got the recognition they deserves. Am very sure they swipe other artist style.
