I think Joe is being very respectful seeing Jess's parents. It is a good start for their future.

They're the ethnic minorities in his country. Doesn't take much bravery. What would be brave is if this was India and he talked to them there.

God, how sad. He shouldn't punish his Daughter for what happened to him. I really hated her Mother, she was too worried about what others would think.
@PriusRaj4 жыл бұрын
I don't think he's punishing his daughter. I think he's trying to protect her. He literally said "you will only end up disappointing her". He's letting fear cloud his mind. The mother though, she's just a fucking crazy shallow bitch.
@Lifeskeyishappiness4 жыл бұрын
A lot of Asians parents were like her though, caring about what their community thinks more than what makes their child happy. This affects marriages and careers as they often wanted to choose that for you, it's starting to change a bit now though.

Lol as far as the mother goes she played the role perfectly it’s a culture thing being very overprotective of their kids 😂🙏🏽

When you see this scene you now understand why her parents did not want her to get into football. It came from a place of trauma and pain and fear.

For them to come from their Home Country to England to start a brand new life was very hard for them. Working in Factories, their children being harassed and bullied and insisting that their Grades whether up to par. They feel that since their children have it "easier" they should be more grateful because of everything that they went through. Even now on UK TV there's still conflict. Remember the Indian Girl who came out to her Mother, she didn't want to hear it.
@PurpleRose14 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt that was their intention. Like Jess later said in the movie when Joe asked her why they won't let her play, they think they're protecting her, especially her dad after what happened to him. Yeah, her mother seems to be a bit more worried about what others in their community would think about her playing (though I'm not sure how that would bring shame to the family as I'm not Indian so I don't completely understand their culture) but in her mind she was trying to spare herself & her family the risk of becoming pariahs in their community.
@Lifeskeyishappiness4 жыл бұрын
@@PurpleRose1 Basically in South Asian communities you were suppose to grow up to be a doctor or lawyer and cook for your husbands if you're a woman. If you lead a different lifestyle you risk bringing shame to your family and damaging your parents reputation in the community. Silly I know. Nowadays times of changed and Asian parents are much more liberal and value their child's happiness much more, it does still happen to a certain extent though, where parents would control your career and who you marry.

I always believed from this scene the dad was trying to protect Jess cause he experienced racism from his cricket but the mother is just worried about the ‘shame’ Jess will bring to her family and I feel she is only thinking of herself

And now the UK has an Indian Prime Minister!! The change is mind-boggling! People would have either laughed at you or thought you have gone mad if you had suggested even 10 years ago that a person of Indian heritage would one day be Prime Minister of the UK. I know I would have responded saying maybe in a hundred years, or maybe never. And it is not just the PM. The entire Ministerial Cabinet is now incredibly multicultural, with people from all kinds of backgrounds - of African heritage, Caribbean heritage, Middle Eastern, etc. Nobody could have thought this possible even 10 or 20 years ago.
