I just watched the ‚Live at Montreux‘ DVD where this is from. Also had an LP with it many years ago. It‘s just mindblowingly great but in a very different way than almost every ‚You Tube super-shred virtuoso‘ these days. Joe Pass had an incredible swing to his playing and when he starts ‚walking’ the tune here after the introduction it really takes off. You could add drums to it without any conflict. And because of his amazing time feel, all his fast licks and harmonic variations make sense. With all the sophistication, there is a bluesy, gritty feel to it. The guitar into amp setup is as simple as can be but there are huge dynamics here. To sum it up: This IS jazz!

When I saw him live, around '79 in Nottingham UK, he was incredible. Not one mistake and a perfect flowing finger style execution. My favourite number he did that night was Cherokee - played with a pick, at breakneck pace and so exciting. He was something special.

High level. Very few jazz guitarists can play a solo guitar concert without it becoming very boring after awhile. Joe could do it.
