When I was a boy of about 12 my father, a pianist, woke me at about 2 AM. Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson were on TV. Dad knew I was keen on the guitar and I always tried to participate in the Friday night jam sessions at our home. So, Dad got me up and the two of us sat in front of the B&W television and were mesmerized by the genius pouring from the tiny speaker. That was my intro to Joe Pass and now, nearly 50 years later his musicianship still astounds me. Thank you for posting this. I will watch it again and again. Whenever I see Joe Pass performing solo I am taken back to that night.

You are so fortunate to have had this musical connection with your dad. I did too. Our living room contained a grand piano and a Conn theater organ with full pedal board. A few evenings a month we'd play duets, mostly blues-based with lots of improvising. As I went through my mid-teens I experienced typical adolescent rebellion and would instigate lots of silly arguments. Our music sessions kept us from losing touch completely and by the time I turned 19 we were reconciled. I have no doubt music enriched our relationship and might well have saved it.

ahhh... I've seen Joe a bunch, particularly around this time. Never with Ella, though. Last time was especially unforgettable - with Sarah Vaughan at the Blue Note, Greenwich Village NYC, 1989. Was newlywed, my wife had been raised on classical music and ballet, and she was so blown away (she's a very accomplished classical pianist and ballerina). She loved that I turned her on to jazz... most memorable jazz evening was a table for 2 at the jazz café on the corner of our street and Broadway, practically at arm's length from McCoy Tyner... I saved up $ for a month for that - and wow, was it ever worth it! Changed her life! Music has given us all so much; we should never take it for granted, we are fortunate. Joe shares the top shelf with the greatest of the greats. I'm obviously a guitarist... 'nuff said. Peace and Alohas, y'all

I love it at 2:53. Check this out-- After "Virtuoso Joe" dazzles us, as usual, with his incredible, fluid, bebop, saxophone-like lines with ease, WITH HIS EYES CLOSED! He gets surprised by the camera close-up but, like a true and rare pro, doesn't miss a beat, or a chord, or a lick, and he cracks a sweet, warm smile and just keeps WAILING, folks --Whoa! Joe, we sure miss you, and thanks for everything you did for music and art. Your legacy will live FOREVER. Most of all, thanks for your courageous example of conquering your heroin addiction to deliver us "the goods" (as in, excellent and timeless music) for many, many years while you were around on this here planet Earth. Thanks, Joe, for giving me your precious time and energy after your live solo concert performance to answer my question about which chord you used on your composition, "Two Track Trip", from the obscure Guitar Player Magazine record you recorded a half a decade earlier at that point. I could tell, Joe, were tired after the performance giving it your all --and, most of all, of the usual, "You're great, Joe!" fawning fan stuff by all the people who mobbed you on stage after the gig because you could have told me to "Get lost!" But NO! Joe, you calmly thought for a moment, --and I'll never forget this, --you told me the EXACT chord, so I could understand, --being a novice at that point, --in how to figure out what it was by your straight forward explanation of Jazz Music theory in a just a few minutes. WOW! People, I stand before all of YOU, --past, present and future to say, NO money could buy, and, NOTHING, could compare to those few minutes with the sadly late, but great Joe Pass. Joe Pass, may you be firing up that ole Jazz bandstand where ever you are! We LOVE you, Joe, and always will! ;_; [then wipes tears from eyes] Peace.

Using high powered amplification is what brought the jazz guitar to the forefront, and is a useful tool for expression in its own right. I keep hearing these phrases thinking that a phaser and some fuzz would sound killer! John petrucci comes to mind.
@epf19612 жыл бұрын
@@stevescuba1978 Pardon me, but you’re wrong. What brought the guitar into its own as a viable solo instrument was not “high powered” amplification, but enough amplification to allow the guitar (thanks to Charlie Christian) to have a solo voice alongside the horns in an ensemble. No louder or softer than an (unamplified) saxophone. I think the point Mr. Schoonenberg was trying to make is that, if you’re a great player, you don’t need to dress like a clown, have fancy dance moves, blow everyone’s eardrums out with a Marshall Stack, and end the show by setting your guitar on fire. In addition, “phasers and fuzz” have no place in classic jazz. Again, these are unnecessary adornments that would only cloud the purity of a virtuoso performance such as this. We want to hear the guitar, not artificial electronic effects. Perhaps they ARE needed in the more juvenile styles of music that could not stand on their own without them.
@stevescuba19782 жыл бұрын
@@epf1961 just because you don't understand different music does not mean it is juvenile. Experimenting with new sounds is the way music has always evolved. It is amusing how many of you old timers think that music stopped where YOU chose, and that anything different is less sophisticated or "juvenile". I guess YOU get to decide what is considered virtuous performance, and which instruments deserve a place on stage. Good metal music is every bit as sophisticated as Bach, regardless of how many watts it is amplified with. When I said high powered amplification, I meant "loud enough to hear over the band", and believe me, those ole 2-6 watt amps are plenty loud! Also, if you don't think that the stage they are on has "high-powered" amplification, making his solitary guitar a viable means of entertaining the crowd, then how do you think everyone could hear him? I also never said that Joe Pass needed pedals, I said it would be interesting to hear it that way. I would imagine that most guitar players would enjoy experimenting with different sounds to open up their expressive arsenal...every single guitar player I've met has.
@stevescuba19782 жыл бұрын
@@epf1961 I left my previous reply as an example of 30 minutes and a cup of coffee. I did not intend to be snappy. What I meant by my original post was that; the guitar amplifier, and venue sound systems, allowed a single guitar to be played, with nuance and clarity, to large audiences. Play in Pass' style without an amplifier, and quiet talking would drown out the guitar. When I said high-powered, I meant mostly that a guitar could be played with sax and drums and be a lead instrument or blend. When it comes to style, John Petrucci, an accomplished music student, teacher, and performer plays very jazzy licks and styles, but adds interesting flavors to the sounds with effects, varying his music from clean to metal to just strange. To each their own, and if it doesn't suit you, then you are free to listen to what pleases you. At one time, people thought the vocal styles of these early blues/jazz female singers was raunchy and vulgar. People did not see the quality of gritty voices, just like distorted guitars. Time moves on, and I feel that MORE expression in music is good, whether it is through sheer virtuosity (Joe Pass) or immense creativity (Jimi Hendrix). I do not agree, however that the use of effects implies anything juvenile. Quite the contrary, to use effects with a guitar effectively turns it into a new instrument to be incorporated into your music. I would say that, fine tastefully, mastery of effects is its own realm of musical genius.

Joe is unbelievably skilled. He can do anything he wants to do on the jazz guitar. Whether he is playing solo, duo, whatever, he is in command. Ella is so great. Both of them are such great artists.

This is as good as it gets, true strangeness, Ella and Joe, taking us well far out beyond whatever your beliefs are. This is divine partnership. True love and COMPLEX. So pristine. So joyous!

not god gifted. stop giving credit to your delusions for musicians who practice hard all the time. God has nothing to do with it, or the world would be different. god is a lazy pos by all accounts.

Joe Pass is marvelous to behold and listen to, he has so unique a sound and style, the "mother of smooth"... I do have a dozen Joe Pass old vinyls here... but I must confess, that I never could make him one of my musical favourites, because of that cool smoothness, almost no dynamics in the music, and somehow it just keeps on and on... You can't tell one tune from the next, unless it's a very famous one. But the moment Ella steps in... the duet is so damn good.... amazing.

When you play and sing at this level there may be different players/singers but there is no one better. Two absolute masters at their best enjoying each others art and making beautiful art together.

My theory (among many) is that musicians that are having a good time - joy as it were - are the best at their craft. I love to watch Dave Brubeck play - he is totally lost in his love of playing the piano!

This should be considered a world heritage duo...and thanks God Joe could go on for hours while Ella was trying to find her way back in the song :)) Hearing one of the greatest singer ever lived saying "I'm sorry" if one thinks of how much presumption there is nowadays among the new generations of singers...unbelievable! Joe thank you for giving us so much, RIP... we'll never forget you!!!

Due to my jazz-loving parents I came to see and enjoy this marvelous duo some years later in the 80's at a very similar concert in my hometown Düsseldorf. I assume it to be one of their last visits of Germany. Ella was nearly blind and had week legs due to her diabetis, but what a voice she still had! This remarkably wide range from tender to sharp, from sweet to expressive, from playful to groovy was still shining through. And what can one not like about Joe's playing? His skills are impeccable. Few people know that even a metal guitarist like Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath quoted Joe to be his idol. Ella and Joe, they both were undisputed masters and icons of their category. I am thankful for having seen them on stage during their lifetime. And thanks also for the upload.

What an overstatement, there is no greatest guitarist.. Besides you seem to be forgetting Django Rheinhardt, Chet Atkins, Paco de Lucia, George Benson and Tommy Emmanuel just to drop a few names of other equally great guitarists in there...

George Fasey having found an idol means always "X" is FOR ME the gratest - all those admired artists became famous because of their uncomparable skills..all of them are "the greatest" for all the different tastes on the world. I like the excitement in all those postings - for me there is nothing about "over- underrated". Just listen and close your eyes, forget the world around you..

In all reality, it's completely scary that someone can be that good. I mean, they've somehow gone way beyond the human and into some element of the stratospheric. It really is too much to take in all at once.

Just gonna get this out there, I listen to multiple genres, and highly enjoy this music, but if you are putting music up as a objective thing, you are sorely mistaken, no finer music to you? Maybe to you, not everyone.

This avid listener to jazz (since 1955) agrees that it is impossible to seriously find any fault in the music-making of either Joe or Ella. One indicator of Ella's mastery is that nobody except Mel Torme could match her ability to scat. (Mind you, it's hard to think of more than a handful of other singers -- in the whole history of jazz -- whose scat singing doesn't cause the listener to squirm.)

Joe Pass and Ella Fitzgerald...Man! The incredible, melodic music that they made together back in ‘75 was absolutely heavenly!
