The whole “war is stupid” rant reminds me of the “don’t learn swordsmanship” lesson from Kill Six Billion Demons. Basically, long story short, in this webcomic’s lore there’s numerous quotes from a manual of swordsmanship written by the greatest sword master of all time. The opening of the manual essentially tells you to go out and build a house, make a farm, and basically get a life. It then concludes with “okay, now that you have a life, you no longer have any need to learn swordsmanship because learning to use a sword is stupid and sword masters are all fools.”

@@Baldwin-iv445 The narrative of Haig being a butcher is a myth and one historians are trying to get changed because Haig was actually very well aware of the conditions and challenges he even visited the frontline trench alot he did genuinely care about the troops under his command and contrary to the myth Haig wanted to hold off the attack at the Somme until his troops where reinforced with more experienced troops he also was very much in favour of deploying tanks he was one of the first to recognise their potential. There are a lot of myth's about Douglas Haig hell even the quote "Lions lead by Donkeys" is a modern quote the majority of officers contrary to the common narrative where genuinely pretty good and everyone was struggling to get out of the trench warfare nobody knew how the officers and general made the best with what they had.

@@samuel10125 I was agreeing with Dewot above. I am fully aware of how Haig has had his legacy shit on. Actually, in Joes reaction to, "A fully unwanted rant on WW1 tanks." I mentioned in the chat how Haig has gotten too much hate. And then Joe went to go on a tirade on all of the regurgitated points that people give about Haig, which I responded with talking about how Haig regularly visited artillery pos and hospitals and didn't eat in luxury and was always close enough to the front where he could command his troops, just not in the trenches. And then Joe said it was all propaganda. Now, don't get me wrong, I like Joe, but this goes to show how Haig has undeservedly had his legacy destroyed to the point where perfectly reasonable history nerds like us and scout even fall for all the myths.

Unrelated, but when you mentioned how tactics was waiting for your opponent to make a mistake, it reminded me of this CoH pvp game I was in once. Short version, I suck at CoH cuz I can't micro for shit and preferred static defenses and long range artillery that can't really deal with rush tactics. Anyways, there I was, using a fucking AA truck to hold off intantry when I suddenly hear my opponent (we were friends in the same discord voice chat at the time) mention he didn't actually have anything to stop me after the infantry he sent towards me got shredded by my AA truck and his only tank, which was a light tank cuz it was still early game, just got knocked out by my infantry with a piat. Hearing this, I immediately sent everything I had forward and managed to take out his base. That was the single victory I ever scored against that guy

No, it was Not horrid German tactics that lost them the war, it was the fact Germany had NO(very little) FUEL which FORCED their tactics and had not enough manpower! USSR had fuel and trucks from the USA allowing them to simply bypass the German tank formations by hitting the flanks of the Germans by sending tanks at unsupported infantry with only anti tank guns time after time after time as the Germans were tied hand and foot to the railroads as they were using a thing called..... HORSES on the eastern front. Yea yea, this is over simplified, and yes, both the USSR and Germans used shit tactics... but honestly... who the Hell did not in WWII?

Everything fought with in WWII was developed BEFORE WWII kicked off even the Manhattan project, though this one you can claim half of it was developed during WWII and it only happened due to GARGANTUAN amounts of $$$. There are a couple VERY rare small exceptions such as a couple field hacks by the army for anti mine work created by the Brits and even THIS was in progress BEFORE WWII kicked off. ALL aircraft engines used in WWII were in development before WWII. Yes, even the turbines which showed up in 1945. All the breakthroughs in materials science aluminum which allowed those lighter faster aircraft happened in the 1930's. ASDIC/RADAR--> same thing.

I think that their is a myth to how cavalry were used that ppl still believe By the beginning of the 1st World War, all cavalry units had been turned into what would be better described as mounted rifleman. There was some debate over removing their melee weapons but it was felt that the 1 time they were needed would be worth keeping them. This was then justified in ww1 as there were several successful cavalry charges, such as the Australian light horse and one in the opening phases where British cavalry met German cavalry sabre to sabre There were even mass cavalry charges in ww2, most notable by Italy in North A and the red army polish cavalry in Russia (both were successful btw) also, the US lost the war of 1812, which was mostly fort by any troops who made up the equivalent of the B-team...

Mandatory retirement age for the US is 60. And yet we still have morons who think the MCX SPEAR was a good replacement for the M4. It isn't. The people who have used it in combat have even said so. If anything, it's more like a replacement for the rapidly aging M14. In other words, it's better as a DMR than a service rifle. Ouch. I think we can all agree that there should've been a compromise. The M250 LMG has been universally loved, while the MCX SPEAR hasn't. The RM277 Rifle has gotten nothing but positive reception across the board, while it's LMG version has not. Just give SIG the LMG contract, while General Dynamics gets the Rifle contract with the RM277. There. Problem solved.

Numbers do matter. Especially missing numbers. If the quality is good like in most US products that were given to the other allies. Without the US production numbers the sowjets would have lost probably and germanys missing equipment numbers broke all their fancy new combined warfare tactics from the start. No trucks, half tracks etc.mostly just walking or horses.

Soooooooo the cossacks aren't russian. They originate as a fusion of turkic and slavic ethnic groups that came together quite early, as in before the tenth century. They lived mainly in Ukraine, and some of them in the southeast of Russia. Also they were TERRIFYING. The classic 'short men on chubby horses with furry hats', they were (much like the North American Indians) light cavalry the likes of which the west had never seen before. Back in the early parts of the second millenium AD, despite being a disorganized collection of ....tribes isn't even accurate. The Cossacks began as essentially Slavic adventurers and or criminals journeying into what is now Ukraine and south east Russia, making friends with these guys mainly by saying things like 'heyyyyyy! My names Pyotr! Look, before you kill me, I have this idea where we could both get a pile of treasure, fuck with the Russian assholes that screwed me over, and after that, well.... Plenty more Russian assholes especially if we stay partners... Some historians think that at this time the region was a sort of 'wild west' with extremely disgruntled native inhabitants seeing an influx of european assholes, but some of those europeans joined their side instead. This produced, as Russia gradually gained local dominance, a great pool of potential recruits to the cavalry. Russia's cossack regiments became legends, supposedly even the Polish Winged Hussars spoke of cossacks with respect. Not fear, because they're Winged Hussars, and if they charged Russian tanks on horseback I would place my money on the poles, and not simply because the Russian tanks would break down or explode by themselves. One of the major reasons, if you believe in cultural heritage and inspirations as a valid part of warfare, (and I do, at least in most cases, reminding a people under attack by a superior force that 'the line of their people before them' have all risen to these same ocassions, and that they will too, etc etc etc will produce the most important factor in winning a war: belief that you are just plain better than they are, and as long as we keep fighting, they will keep losing, but I digress) that Russia is being so throughly slapped around by Ukraine could easily be said to be because Ukraine is Cossack country. Those people are, seriously, the descendants of people who told the Mongols to sod off (and make it stick) largely because they were the descendants of Vikings, and of the slavic people tough enough to spit in a vikings eye and make it stick. That's what a Ukrainian is. Ukraine is a place where 19 yr old schoolgirls can out drink any two US marines, and very likely out ***** them afterwards. (Count the number of asterisk before jumping to conclusions, coomer, although your first guess is likely ALSO correct. But only if she feel like it.). Ukraine is a place where a girl of 19 has an ass like two cats fighting in a sack, but where what matters more to the boys she works with is how fast she can get the mortar up and lobbing love notes at the enemy. In short, Cossacks are charging Russian tanks RIGHT NOW. And the Russian tanks are going backwards as fast as they can because of it. I feel your pain. Goddamn Montgomery was such a complete bloody tool. It's sort of shocking he didn't get forced out of the service long before reaching General, the Brits being something of an old boys club at officer level, one would think such an obnoxious dickweed would have been shuffled off. I should read a bit and find out why one of these days.
