I had a shitty job. No money, no work/life balance, no direction in life. I’d just graduated college and just couldn’t find a job willing to hire someone with no experience. Hundreds of applications, 3 interviews. Not one was interested in me. I didn’t know what to do. My major was not in any art, but I grew up drawing and was doing digital artwork for local bands, so I started grinding out a graphic design portfolio, 6 months I worked on this, to try and nab some proper freelance work, so I’d at least have some kinda money. I ended up booking a full time job at a great company during a period of expansion. I make good money, I love what I do, I have time for myself and the other things I wanna do. In conclusion; figure out what you wanna do, and fucking do it. Be the best at it. Or even just good enough. Because if I can do it, so can you.

As frustrating as it can be, it's honestly sad to see someone you care about constantly have a victim mentality. It's like they're trapped in a prison of their own design where everything is someone else's fault and they're just the 'victim' of bad breaks. It allows them to live in a state of delusion where they don't have to take responsibility for the fact they're just stuck on a loop of self pity and laziness. Like Joe said though, when it get's to a certain point you have to just leave them be. You can't force them to see what they don't want to see and you can't be an enabler.

I have someone in my life who I’ve come to realize is like this, and it’s causing a lot of negativity in my life. I’ve come to the unfortunate conclusion that I just have to greatly reduce my contact with this person, and when they start blowing me up with their toxic drama I just cannot engage. I have been through some seriously fucked up shit in my life but I honestly feel that there is no such thing as a victim, everyone has struggles and problems but it is 100% up to you how you deal with them and move forward in your life. Anyone who can’t do that is not an emotionally mature person.

This shit is on POINT!!! We ALL struggle. I struggle. Every day. Some days are better than others. Some days I'm on top of the f'n world!! Yesterday, I struggled with plumbing a pump on a pond, and such mundane shit cost me 4 hours of my life and it was embarrassing. Made me want to cry. And so many people around me that are so negative. I feel like I have to help them defeat their own minds and their own personal demons. But, sometimes, man, I can barely do it myself. Where are those people when I'm down? Smh. I've got a good life. I'm blessed. I have decent intelligence. I'm healthy. I have a good income, own my own business. So, I'm blessed. I know it. But, sometimes.... and it's those times that separate us. The weak from the strong. And I empathize. I do my best to be there for the people I love when they're going through it. But, sometimes I'm like, hey man, it's time you do this shit for yourself. I got my own shit. Where the fuck are you when I'm down? I do my best to be altruistic and supportive. But, sometimes I wrestle with cutting those people out of my life. Life.... like this guy just said... our minds... a trip.

George Bushlington true, but that doesn't last. Those people who are getting paid their worth move on, that's what I did. I was paid less at one job and doing more than my coworkers, when I asked for a raise I was denied so I left. I found a new job, got ranked #2 out of the staff in the first month of my being there, and I'm making more than them consistently because of my effort. That isn't to say that luck isn't involved, I wouldn't have gotten my last job without luck. But luck is only part of it

Not only do “I can’t catch a break people” drag people down, but when they DO catch the rare break they tend to completely squander it. Consider the true statistic that people who win the lotto tend to go bankrupt, get divorced, etc shortly thereafter. They catch a break, and then they squander it all.

Friend of mine gained motivation and hasn't even stopped working on himself after a bad breakup. While physically and financially he got it together, mentally he's barely progressed at all. And like Joe said, it's exhausting and every conversation I consider takin a break from befriending the guy. Constantly shaming his own hair, yelling about the same traffic annoyances every time he drives, complaining about fat people and (this one's hilarious) complaining about people parking close to the store because "they're too lazy to walk farther"...... it's constant and it's taken too much energy out of me.

Victim mentality can literally kill you.

Some of us are going paralyzed from our "bad break" and get worse everytime they sit up or stand up for more than a couple hours . Some of our bad breaks are degenerative disorders which means that they are getting worse over time and they don't just effect someone's past but are integrally part of a person's future.

It's hard to overcome what you've been feed since you were a child . It impedes your ability to have succes because you think the world is against you and working hard is pointless. FUCK THAT ! try hard, do what's best for you and succeed. You are stronger and more capable than you know. Take time , think, get your head on, make a plan. Sure you will fail several times. The way that Yves mentions how a baby cries after feeling sensation outside of the womb for the first time is a pretty interesting event to think about. Radiohead's Everything in Its Right Place also looks into how bizarre, and even tragic, that moment is. It is like this intense transition from order to chaos, and all the person who is experiencing this can do is cry because of how intense it is. I wish that there was some way that we could re-experience birth while keeping the minds we have gained as we age. The closest thing to doing that is to actually die, given that it would resemble the state we were in before birth. To be honest, not being born actually sounds kind of nice.

Then I go on LinkedIn and see a post by someone who was a grocery bagger and life guard land the exact type of job I want. And he has less experience. I at least have some from internships but this guy's talking about how he has no finance experience and his degree is in marketing. Another group of dickheads whose skulls I want to crack with a jackhammer are the ones who say "Well, then start a business."

It's a controversial one in my opinion. Definitely easy to poison your mind if you can't catch that break. Happens to me all the time. I grafted my ass off 70 hours a week whilst trying to get education for 18-30 hours a week for 2 years to get me where I wanted for it to be crushed in the first month lol. It's hard picking yourself back up but you have to if you want to achieve whatever it is you aim for. Most sacrifices cost money too and coming from a very poor family in a first world country, statistically it's very hard to get out of that bubble to chase whatever it is you want in the first place. However, life doesn't care for your hardships and you have to get blood out of a stone regardless. Luckily I'm 22 so have my whole life ahead of me to make and learn from mistakes and setbacks. Graft your ass off and better yourself mentally, get rid of social networking sites that poison your mind, keep like minded people around you and don't waste time on people not interested in bettering themselves, compare yourself to no one and embrace your individual journey whilst appreciating every fuck up and success that this life gives you. You might not even make it but at least you won't have as many regrets. Sounds cliche as fuck but it's what I try to follow at least.

There are more serious systemic problems in the United States and the rest of the world that cause those people to be homeless. Mental illness is a lot of it, but more and more it’s people who just couldn’t keep up. I don’t remember exactly the statistic but something like half the country doesn’t have an extra $400 in an emergency, I don’t think joe can understand what that is like anymore. Honestly I usually appreciate what Rogan has to say, and I would even go as far as to say that this segment is 99% right. However, there are plenty of people in the world that can’t catch a break. People die every day. Just because Joe has been in positions where he can land million dollar contracts through hard work, and I’m sure his fair share of lucky breaks, doesn’t mean that everyone is in the same position. People that have this attitude in the long term that default back onto negativity as an excuse not to improve are an issue, yes, but it is absolutely true that people run into relentless injustice for sometimes years on end. If there is someone out there who feels like they’ve been running into some serious difficulty and don’t know how to improve their life, please know that that doesn’t mean people in your life should flat out reject you instantly, or cut you out for being negative. Do what you can, and be honest with yourself about how much you can do. If you can do more, do it. If you can’t, accept it for the time being and don’t let people tell you that you can’t feel the way you naturally feel. And overcome when you can.

i dont think joe is talking about the people who had zero opportunity. there's a big portion of ppl living in america who has the opportunity and always complaining, there are so many of those people and that's who he is talking about. hearts out to people who are living in 3rd world countries where their opportunity are much less, but having said that, the point of it is they still have to think of a way to get out, and by complaining and saying "i can't catch a break" all the time it does not solve their problem, and it puts them in a delusional place
@rizekitty1484
@rizekitty1484 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate your sentiment mate but this concept has to be looked at from a case by case basis and not as a general 'rule of thumb'. Let's run your scenario for argument sake: Individual A has been dealing with marital problems, the death of a child, overhanging debt and a lack of faith in himself, his God and his community. This man can never pull himself out of the "woah is me" mentality and constantly makes excuses or shifts the blame to deter from having to conceed any involvment in these matters. Then this scenario would apply. Let's say Individual B is going through the exact same scenario BUT he has never deterred from his mission in life. He can view his life objectively and understand how certain events caused other more traumatic events to transpire. He understands that not everything is necessarily happening 'to him' , rather these events are happening because of the choices he makes in life. Then this scenario at face value would not apply. The moment you begin to see your life as a constant stream of decisions that you objectively understand in some small or large way happen, and have happened because of your involvment you can then begin to change the conversation in your own mind. Joe is speaking straight facts. Even if from time to time I don't want to hear that advice and just want to wallow about some nonsense scenario that doesn't even matter in the grand scheme of things, I always hold these words true in the back of my mind. You know... They say we men live by a code. A code of honor and brotherhood. Well I can think of nothing nobler than attempting to remind your brothers when they have run a miss and gone off track. I have mad love for Joe and the manner in which he preached this message. He took everything into account, provided a variety of different avenues to help people grasp the concept but there will always be those that don't want to hear the message because they feel shame for what they have done or how they feel about themselves. We brothers that preach the message never look down on anyone... We have nothing but praise and sometimes your brother needs to give you the hard truth so that you understand what is at stake. It's tough to hear but you're the one that has to live in this body and experience life in the matter that you do. If you have the means and opportunity to alter the course of your life, which we always do... Then you should do it, whatever it may be. You owe it to yourself and I would go as far as to say you owe it your brothers to step up and carry the weight too. Much love.

@IRISHninjaCOW
@IRISHninjaCOW 2 жыл бұрын
@@ba9695 Yeah, because things like starvation, crippling poverty, and negative externalities of the status quo don’t exist! (*sarcasm*). If I think Joe is 99% correct, and you agree with his notion, how could I be 100% wrong? 😂 it sounds like you just need to re-read the comment more thoughtfully. I’ve done my reading and I’m aware that most people aren’t in circumstances where negativity is warranted, but it would be an unbelievably ignorant thing to believe that unjust suffering doesn’t exist in the world, or that a self-help book would be applicable to people in those positions. For people that a self-help book would work for, you’re right, and I already agreed in my comment, which explains why I said he’s 99% right. Most of those people don’t have real obstacles in life they can’t overcome themselves, hence it being called SELF-help. But there are plenty of individuals for whom the SELF is not enough to help them. Intervention is sometimes necessary, as you would know if you have friends or family that struggle with substance abuse, for example. I suggest reading something other than a self help book for insight on that if not. :) Thanks for your reply anyways! If someone less successful than me is in need of support, I will absolutely recommend some self help books, so thank you for your suggestion.
