Actually it does in a way… which is why people don’t get generally arrested for it. But you are responsible for the results: if your lies directly cost or harm someone, you can be held responsible for restoring or relieving the damage you caused (whether criminal or civil). For another example: people love to trot out “You can’t yell fire in a crowd…” but you absolutely can. If nothing happens, you’re good; but if someone is hurt as a result (and it can be shown through evidence), you can be held responsible. This is how it’s interpreted in decent society; i.e. freedom comes with responsibility. That being said, in case anyone’s wondering, yes I do believe many members of the media caused tangible damage to the President, Musk, and many others; and they should be punished for it.

If KZbinrs have to put up “speculation warnings” and make it super extra clear when they are stating their own personal opinions in order to not get sued, why shouldn’t the folks on tv have to do the same?? It’s easy to avoid a lawsuit: say something like “in my opinion” or “I personally believe” or “this is just speculation on my part, but…” You just can’t state that stuff as fact, which the women on the view often do. Everyone is used to the media being deflaming and slanderous but it hasn't always been like it is. Around 25 years ago, when George Bush became president, it became what it is today. Before then satire was the closest thing we would see to deflaming and slander; with satire even the person it is directed towards laughs at it because of the wit involved in satire, wit and with it satire is a lost art. To return to a more professional media something drastic does need to happen to hold it to a professional standard.
