When I listened to him read the letters that some of the British soldiers sent to their loved ones before the Battle of the Somme, knowing the next day they were going over the trench into a massacre of machine gun fire, I had to pull my car over to regain my senses. That whole series, especially the parts about Verdun, gave me a mild form of PTSD. Now, if I ever am having a shitty day, I find solace in recognizing how things actually could be so much worse, that I could be stuck on the front lines at Verdun.
@Mike92019848 жыл бұрын
"This western-front business couldn’t be done again, not for a long time. The young men think they could do it but they couldn’t. They could fight the first Marne again but not this. This took religion and years of plenty and tremendous sureties and the exact relation that existed between the classes. The Russians and Italians weren’t any good on this front. You had to have a whole-souled sentimental equipment going back further than you could remember. You had to remember Christmas, and postcards of the Crown Prince and his fiancée, and little cafés in Valence and beer gardens in Unter den Linden and weddings at the mairie, and going to the Derby, and your grandfather’s whiskers. […] This kind of battle was invented by Lewis Carroll and Jules Verne and whoever wrote Undine, and country deacons bowling and marraines in Marseilles and girls seduced in the back lanes of Wurtemburg and Westphalia. Why, this was a love battle - there was a century of middle-class love spent here." F. Scott Fitzgeral - Tender is the Night

Sadly, it seems to have gone extinct....which is especially frustrating during this election. His truly META analysis of current events is _as_ interesting as his analysis of history.

Late to the game here but I agree. The social fabric is dwindling and everyone treats everyone else worse, since they are far away and can shout from the safety of their keyboards. Now, people can't even agree on sets of truths in order to prompt the discussion. So it's much easier to view the world as a very simple, every issue is 0 or 1, every person is 0 or 1, there's no spectrum or complexity. It's much easier on peoples' minds to view the world this way, then they can start generating farfetched ideas and shout them at everyone else.

The racism of some Trump supporters is almost definitely down to the fact that the white working class have been systematically ignored by the Left because they stopped caring about poverty and started caring entirely about racial groups. _"the Left stopped caring about poverty and started caring entirely about racial groups"_ (a) There hasn't been a proper political Left in the United States in almost a hundred years. (b) Swapping race for class is a tactic of the capitalist elite.
@jasonsimpson13978 жыл бұрын
There is some merit to that. I jumped ship from the democrats with this whole sjw movement. It's like, not only were average white men ignored socially, they fell under attack. I know my vote won't count, but I'm voting Gary Johnson this time around, because the others want to fuck me.

One of many reasons Dan Carlin is awesome is because he uses historical primary and secondary sources in each of his topics. Is he an actual historian, No. But that's his strength. He is using the tools of historians to explain areas of history for the general public. His delivery is exciting and evocative without being over the top and all his quotes come from the written record.

Dan Carlin is a master of what he does. His Hardcore History on the Cold War was incredible. I'm starting his WWI podcast-- already blowing my mind.

He was making fun of stoners that claim they smoked pot for the high. It is firmly documented the practical use of hemp. However not pot as method of inebriation per say. Full disclosure I fully believe they did too. Mostly because I love weed, and they seemed to be intelligent so maybe they liked it too.

Love your show Joe! Would be really cool to have a list in the description of topics that you have meandered through and at what times as well. I tend to tap out after about an hour and a half depending on the topic, and I always wonder if I have missed something interesting.

I learned so much from his history shows and also it got me interested in looking into history even more. Wrath of the Khans got me to watch Marco Polo on Netflix and then read up on all that history. It's soo interesting.Thanks Dan Carlin and Joe for introducing me to him.

I don't know _anything_ about bears. Are they an animal perchance? I randomly happened upon this Joe blokes radio show on the world wide web. I'm curious...do they ever talk about bears? I know so little about them....and it would be great to learn some more. Also...does this Joe fellow ever mention werewolves or archery or the exact chemical composition of DMT? Lastly, I'd love to learn about cooking meat and if isolation tanks are worth the trouble. Is this podcast worth a listen? Just curious. Thx! ^___^

Wolves, yes. Werewolves... I don't thin I've ever heard him mention them. You can probably find him drawing parallels between anything and bjj, though.

Great episode, really enjoined in it. So much so that I started to look for some other episodes with Dan Carlin as a guest. I listened to episode #328 and it's almost the same as this episode. They are really getting older.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” -Thomas Jefferson Sounds radical, but our Founding Fathers knew what needed to be done to keep citizens truly free. Another American Revolution is the only way to "reset" the system. That's the whole reason for the Second Amendment.
@jameseverlastin45626 жыл бұрын
Too bad it will never happen. The lack of checks and balances for Big Brother has far reached the tipping point. They can and do, do whatever they want. No revolution of any kind will ever happen. The Gov. is too powerfull today, unlike the era of our founding fathers.

The problem is, who's the enemy? The military, the police, your neighbor who works for usps? If it's just politicians, which ones? All? If it's a right vs left civil war, then who are we overthrowing.
