Philippe Grandmont He’s decent. But Interestingly, Carroll “avoided” mentioning the LEADING quantum physics theory which is the Copenhagen Interpretation (Not the first time he does this). He either forgot to mention it or.....? Whether or not he agrees with it, it’s very interesting to ponder the question ‘WHY did he do this? ‘ I recommend looking it up. And hopefully Joe will have someone come on and fill in the large gaping hole in QP theory that Carroll conveniently left out of his explanation. The Copenhagen interpretation blows the roof off science as we know it. Check it out people!

@@eduardmonroe1079 eduard monroe Copenhagen interpretation, while its satisfy experimentalist, I cannot agree its the leading theory of how we think QM really works. My professor definitely favored Copenhagen (although the idea isnt very useful for class afterwards) and those in Quantum computing relies on the wavefunction to stabilize itself. My opinion on the leading theory of QM is what Caroll said was the 5th theory. We are ignorant of how QM works in reality and the QM formulation of the wavefunction is only a tool and not a function thats realizable.

+[eduard monroe] Basically everything Sean Carroll talked about was related to the Copenhagen Interpretation aka Orthodox Quantum Mechanics. More specifically, it was about refuting Copenhagen. Sure, he only name-checked it once, but when he talks about "traditional Quantum Mechanics' or things to that effect, he's talking about Copenhagen. Also, the "epistemological interpretation" he mentioned as being the "fourth version" of QM is basically what Copenhagen is. The *entire point* that Sean Carroll is making, is that the Copenhagen Interpretation is hopelessly inadequate, because it expressly prohibits asking questions about how the Universe works and what is actually happening, and that in turn leads to the "wooha" of films like _What the BLEEP do we know?_ . It also denies Science it's very nature, which is exactly to understand how the Universe works and what is actually going on in it. Copenhagen is "Shut up and Calculate!". Sean Carroll's response is: _"No, fuck that. I will not shut up, and all those people who are telling me to shut up are ridiculous idiots."_ Those ridiculous idiots being the Orthodox QM adherents. By the way: it's an apt name, Orthodox Quantum Mechanics. Far more apt that "the Copenhagen Interpretation", in fact. Because like any Orthodoxy ever, they squash, any questions about what's actually going on or how the stuff they're telling you actually works, with extreme prejudice.

Sean Carroll is really easy to listen to and as he said, likes explaining how the world works. Brian Cox as well is quite enjoyable to listen to. So I went to Khan academy to learn the math, and somewhere around integral calculus, where he was teaching how to calculate volume of solids and things like that, I quit studying because of the circumstances in my life. It's been a few years and I haven't resumed. I hope my life gets better so I can continue.

They also can move from one place to another place like teleporting, there is a big question of whether electrons have free will in quantum mechanics. An electron's quantum leaping is acausal, we can't give a cause as to when an electron is going to jump or if there is more than one orbit or energy level to jump to, we can't say which orbit the electron is going to leap to or when. I believe personally something is controlling everything at all time or at least has programmed things ahead of time. Maybe it's a scientist and we're in a computer but I doubt it, I think the truth is unfathomable to us and if we knew the truth, if we could just pull the curtain of reality back like pulling a movie screen back to see what's behind it, we'll wish we never did. It's going to be something we never expected, something we couldn't even imagine and it's going to be too much for us to handle mentally and our minds would be destroyed by fear. I don't think we can figure it out though, I mean let's just say a classical philosopher like Schopenhauer was correct and that our entire life is a single night's dream and when we die, we will wake up in our "true life" and that existence will be no less suited to us than this one. How can physics or any science ever prove we are inside of a dream. If the Will is a thing in itself and the will to live existed before life itself did and is the reason for life, the reason a tree reaches for the sun defying gravity, the reason a small plant can break through concrete to bathe in the sun, if that will existed before life then how can science prove that? The truth is that if we submit everything to science we will be left with nothing mysterious or supernatural and what a dull world that would be. Religion is basically the last bit of magic left of Earth, only because science can't answer the big questions, philosophers can philosophize about them and possibly some of them were right but it won't ever be proven in my opinion. Philosophers knew atoms existed almost 2,500 years ago but we didn't see the first atom in a microscope until 1981 and even though that might make it seem that science can eventually prove some philosophy to be true, we are just talking about atoms here. The big questions of which there are endless: How did something (space, the universe) come from nothing? Is there is a kernel inside of us that is immortal? Why is each life and the world around us so full of suffering and misfortune? Why does sorrow accumulate throughout our lives and weigh us down, yet happiness is fleeting? If sex wasn't pleasurable then would we have ended the human race long ago for pity of our children and future generations? If being alive is positive then why are we bored when we are simply existing without external stimuli or something thwarting our will? Well I don't believe science will ever figure any of those things out, I think it'll remain philosophy perpetually and like I said, if they ever do figure it out, I believe they'll wish they'd never tried. Sorry I'm rambling, I lost every living family member except my mother in the last few months and 2 weeks ago she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer... I'm just trying to distract myself by writing the nonsensical stream of thoughts in my head which includes mostly paraphrasing (probably poorly) from memory and hoping it will be cathartic in some way, so if anyone actually read this, I'm sorry for rambling and being pessimistic. Don't listen to me. Right now I feel like life is punishment or a prison sentence, not a simulation or a dream, and this body has my soul imprisoned, I've been sent here to atone for some horrible thing I did in another world or dimension, my spirit forced into a bag of guts that has limbs to move around and consume resources to live, so that my prison sentence doesn't end early because they'll surely send me back if I don't do my time, I feel as if I was given these senses only for them to be used against me, used to harm, confuse and frustrate me until I eventually go mad.

Sorry but I think it's all bullshit and they have no fucking clue what is going on. Real physics is always driven from real engineering and not the other way around. Electricity and chemistry are still absolute mysteries, but engineers kinda found out some rules that you can apply to create super cool stuff. The paradox that is the study of quantum mechanics is that high level professors will only engage with their students to a certain degree about these topics without encouraging them to pursue them after they finish their studies, and the outcome is the scarcity of people in this field. It's risky to pursue because there isn't a direct application as of yet that will net a high income apart from what Sean is doing. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who find these topics utterly fascinating, myself included, that if given enough exposure to this subject will eventually pursue it either crudely or through the academic system directly. I wonder how many people that are already in the system have been discouraged from tackling these issues, because I imagine there are a lot. KZbin is a great medium for getting exposed to stuff like this because although it looks incredibly dry on paper, as in the concepts are very hard to understand, when someone who's passionate begins explaining them to a laymen like myself, the pieces start falling into place. So although there aren't many physicists as of now who are passionate about this subject, I'm sure that in the near future, these youtube videos will reach a much broader audience of potential researchers. This video has only been watched 1.8m times yet there are billions of people in the world. I believe we'll figure it out, we just need to find the right brains to get us there.

It is problematic to fit it into the scientific method. In fact dare i say he over-states many-worlds to say 'the math says...' when its mostly philosophical conjecture. We could do experiments to test what a manyworld maths model is...yet we couldnt verify the existence of other worlds, so potentially the maths might points to something else? What mechanism does the world split? What happens to double the energy, does it not break a law? Extraolating this from the math may be as non-falsifiable as a God! But for real, i think the best thing to happen is to actually make science students take philosophy modules. Epistemology if not already doing it of course. But also these more metaphysical implications even IF they are involving speculation.

This simply isn’t true. Physics as a whole does not have tons of people studying it because it’s perceived as hard and inapplicable outside of academia. However, within academic physics a substantial amount of the research goes to quantum mechanics with the other substantial amount of research going into cosmology and astronomy. Today, very little physics papers are being published about classical mechanics. Quantum information is a budding new field that has high paying jobs at Microsoft, Google, IBM, and most other large computer companies. Because of this, quantum mechanics is becoming the most applicable field of physics (not counting the fact that mechanical and civil engineering are technically just applied classical mechanics). Edit: Just so I’m clear I’m talking about the study of quantum mechanics not the philosophy of quantum mechanics.

Sean fascinates me more than many other Quantum Explainers. Listen to his podcast, he talks about wine and philosophy as well as why Copenhagen interpretation is not as accurate as many worlds. Edit: I really want to say he is a great philosopher.

You have to be careful of not being convinced because of a persons charm. As a physicist I can tell you that more or less everybody knows that the Copenhagen interpretation is not the end of the story when it comes to Quantum Physics, but many worlds interpretation is not an interpretation many find convincing or useful in any way. Sean might argue that it's because most physicist don't think about the foundations of quantum physics, but even the people that are experts in foundations are not big fans of many worlds. I did my PhD at an institute that has one of the largest quantum foundations groups in the world, with the top experts in that field. They would often consider people like Sean Carroll as having very unsophisticated approach to the question. The way modern quantum foundation experts talk and think about quantum physics, is very different than the standard approach that every other physicist uses (including Sean). Don't get me wrong, Sean Carroll is a really great physicist (his main expertise is mainly in no-quantum areas of physics, like classical gravity and cosmology). I personally own his general relativity book, which is great. But I think that he should be careful about misleading the general public about how 'obviously true' a relatively fringe and unpopular idea within physics is.

Sean’s mic stand lines up perfectly with my charger cable when I turn my phone sideways. Looks like his mic is coming from outside of my phone. Did my phone know the mic would be there in that position? Or did the mic stand know where my charging input would be?
