I’m a retired correctional officer. I remember training in take downs, use of mechanical restraints (cuffs) and “Positional asphyxiation”. When a combative inmate is placed in mechanical restraints, being placed face down can cause asphyxiation. We were taught to roll them on the side so they could breathe. Then you assist them to the knees, then on their feet. You DO NOT put any part of your body on top of the combatants body after restraints are applied.......period. As soon as they are cuffed, it’s game over, you’ve won. We partnered up to show how dangerous this actually is. Within 30 seconds you can pass out, in 60 you can die.

Berkeley police department has a Zen Buddhist Temple/Sanctuary a block from the station. Officers on duty are encouraged to go in there on their lunch break (or any time during their shift) to unwind - decompress - process feelings - get a better perspective and meditate for an hour. BPD officers get tons of sensitivity training and have dozens of resources to get help from stress on and off the job. The list for that department goes on and on when it comes to keeping the community safe from overzealous, good old boy type policing. The days of getting out of your squad car and pulling out your nightstick as you approach somebody are over. Good law enforcement can be done. Keep up the good fight. Things have to change. Some Can't DECIPHER the difference between protesters (peacefully) & anarchists (looters)
@SamXander234 жыл бұрын
Anarchists are still protesting. They're just destroying what capitalism values most. And if you don't understand that police actually work for the corporate State and aren't here to protect civilians it would really benefit you to educate yourself on their activities, both recent and historical. A recent video even had someone convince one of them to March with them & the only excuse he could give not to was that he also needed to protect the businesses. Among the biggest values of most anarchists is a desire to get away from capitalism. It's destroying human communities and the planet with it's infinite greed and lack of empathy.

These people have just come out of lockdown and now they don't have a job because people have in to those temporary feelings of rage and failed to beat their own negativity. Fighting an injustice with more injustice doesn't make a person better but just another asshole. 2:14 Good jails, with good training, and good CO's can handle crowds efficiently and calmly. All police officers should work corrections first before they are allowed on the field. A jail teaches you great verbal communication, adaptability, and overall you get first hand experience with the people you'll deal with on the outside. Cops may get one confrontation every now and then. Corrections officer its a daily thing and you learn to use your words and respond accordingly.

Out of the many things people don't talk about when they criticize police, this has to be a major factor. These departments are built on local idiots whose daddies were in the force before them or otherwise unqualified veterans who just got out of Iraq, and if somebody who is smart comes along then they reject them immediately.

YES, yes, this is the conversation I like to see. Both of you recognize the very real issue of police brutality and how it infects the whole police system, yet also recognize that good cops exist and should rightfully stand with the protesters in this fight. I'm about equally tired of the conservatives who pretend the police system is perfect and the leftists who chalk every good police action up to "copaganda".

I spent most of my life in the Twin Cities. My last 4 years as a MNtan were spent in North Mpls. For those unfamiliar, it is a predominantly minority, working class neighborhood. Being white & male did not prevent me from being stopped & detained at gunpoint 3 times in that period. My only crime was matching the description of a perp in a neighboring town. Mpls loves to think of itself as a beacon of cosmopolitan progressivism on the prairie, but those same "voices of progress" have a long history of abusing their civic authority. And I'm not refeering solely to law enforcement. The political class has spent decades stoking fear & anger among the minority & working class residents while quietly dismissing the abuses of power among the bad actors in law enforcement. I wouldn't say the overall culture in Mpls is overtly racist, but it definitely reeks of the soft bigotry of low expectations. Whether Floyd was targeted & treated so horribly simply because he was black is up for debate. I am convinced he was another unfortunate vicitim of the disgusting abuse of power that has been part of Mpls' political culture for a good 60 years.

I think this pretty much encompasses all similar issues. Take gun control for example: plenty of people think it's absolutely abhorrent to own a gun, that they are some root of evil and violence, etc. Yet if someone was breaking into their house with a gun while their family slept, first thing they're going to wish for is a way to protect themselves; a gun.

When I was a kid I always looked at adults as people with inherent wisdom, strength, and maturity. When in reality, they’re just bigger and they know more things about the world. I think people look at police officers that way: as if they have inherent social superiority, when really they just decided they want to be a cop and got some training to become one. They are just as human as us, and as the criminals they arrest, and that shines through when you see what the stress of the whole country against you feels like. Like Joe Rogan likes to say, it’s one of those “us versus them jobs”, that requires a ruthless, tribal mentality to some degree. I’m not trying to defend the cop that choked out Floyd, that guy is a jerk of course, but rather all the other cops that find themselves in trouble. I hope the protestors-as good as their intentions may be-understand that policing is inherently flawed and cannot be changed too much. There are already regulations at play. If something *can* change, then I hope it does.

Yes police officers are humans, however they should be held to a higher standard and should have stronger repercussions when they commit a crime and not have that crime swept underneath the rug. Look at the military, when do you hear about a soldier humiliating a combatant and doing such gross acts that our police get away with everyday. Police officers need more training , in WAR there are atleast 3 different levels of engagement that a soldier must due before firing and they are calm the entire time because of the extensive Training they go through. While cops rely on there weapon and is usually there first resort

I met a kid in college who was a young cop and he took classes for Psychology, Communication, Sociology, and Hispanic and Latin American Studies, he spoke Spanish from high school and he wanted to be a good cop here in AZ. It’s crazy that this community college education was blowing him away ( I had him in Communication and Sociology) we both took 4 classes but he was a working recruit who had been a cop for like 2 years. I was surprised he hadn’t learned this kind of stuff in the Academy but he said it was mostly criminal justice related, not a lot of communication or social awareness

I used to date a guy who applied to be an NYPD officer. They do an extensive background check and even more extensive mental health check. My ex failed the mental health part and he was way more cognitively healthy than a lot of officers I see. I think the abundance of power does something to the brain, especially people with a propensity for psychopathy... like the murdering officer(s). There needs to be an obfuscation of certain checks and balances in each precinct. They should allow an internal investigations to be carried out by a higher ranking third party (FBI branch?) Instead of this police, policing themselves, they have too much power and with too much power comes a propensity towards corruption... and this sick shit.
@sigbrotum21914 жыл бұрын
Theo look at larry lawton’s video on this, it has some great ideas for police reform, but i agree with you. some people are just bad people. but people (including many cops) forget the job of cops is to help the community.

The problems is officers are expected to jump into action in the cases of emergencies. They're expected to completely squash the disturbance on arrival. The other problem is most of dont know what police training is like or have the experience working on the streets.
