@@maodijong3661 it wasn't just who he beat but how he won; in unprecedentedly dominant fashion. Roy Jones jr. was the greatest boxer I ever watched. His reflexes and athleticism we’re unlike any fighter before or after him. Problem is, once he started to age and those unbelievable skills started to deteriorate Roy fell off. That’s why Hopkins had a more successful long career because of his technical abilities. Joe Rogan and Andre Ward telling the truth and giving Bernard Hopkins his just due. I feel too many people don't Hopkins enough credit for his all time status and ability and what he's achieved. He's one of the most underrated boxers of all time and at his best, he could of competed with any fighter between 154 and 175 in my opinion. People need to remember, he was fighting and beating elite fighters in his 40s and still winning championships in his mid 40s which is incredible. Hopkins in his prime didn't have a lot of great fighters in the middleweight division and by the time he was dominating James Toney had already moved up and several others, so his competition was very thin at that time. He kept his body disciplined all those years.

Sometimes you grow up being taught certain things about people regarding race, ethnicity, sex, religion, etc. that it’s hard to shake off even when you’re much older. On that note, I would’ve loved to have seen Joe and Bernard fight each other in their primes at 168. They were basically the black and white versions of each other. Both had awkward rhythm, both could adapt to any style of boxing, both were very well-rounded offensively as well as defensively and both were extremely athletic at their peaks. That would have been a fight for the ages

Man , does he have wisdom , man does he have pertinent info to share , man does he understand the " Art of War " which is about the most influential book in history far pre dating the bible and being something very different ( not competing for bes t sellers list :) ) but an ancient text that is still read by anybody truly successful over the " long game" . Bernard is a living example of that . His story is great and he is about as inspiring as ANYBODY EVER !!! Not only does he have the knowledge , his life exemplifies it and PROVES that what was written and what he says is real . This is not a self help guy getting rich telling people old wisdom and acting like SEE , I am somebody from following this info when all they did was re sell it to you to stack cash . This man acheived what is essentially considered IMPOSSIBLE and normally is , HE BEAT AGE , not once or twice , consistently until it was un deniable . Joe talks the least of any episode ever but its not a problem , Joe respects and has respected Bernard forever and has mentioned him so many times he knows to just let him go. Bernard starts with a theme , reinforces it with story and examples and ties it at the end to where it makes a great point. They say young men dont have examples of man hood , here is one and he is neither a baller despite making money or mr goody two shoes . Very balanced and very relateable wether you grew up in the toughest hood or a silver spoon crammed up your ass sideways he has EXTREMELY GOOD, USEABLE and WORTHWHILE stuff to share that can be applied to everything and for everybody . This is a SERIOUS PERSON OF NOTE , born of the Philly Streets and in the Pen by 17 who used that experience to gain knowledge . Very Impressive and one of the Best JREs ever . Bless Joe for highlighting Bernard this way , Joe puts Bernard in the highest esteem of almost anybody I have ever heard him speak of and he is a big fan of greatness so that says a bunch . I was not fully aware what made Bernard the ALIEN and where his super natural powers came from . Check out the whole thing . its amazing and uplifting without a single moment of being sappy or a single moment of somebody fronting . THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A HARD MAN AS WELL AS A GOOD MAN , A MAN OF GREAT ACHIEVENMENTS WITH PRIDE IN THEM AND YET HUMBLE which is not that easy . Top Shelf shit.

Andre and Hopkins were similar. Disciplined and stretched the rules a bit. Rjj was an amazing athlete and if he stayed at 175 may have dominated. I think weight jumping hurt him a bit. going from mw to hw and back to lhw took too much. Rjj was the best of the 3. All 3 we're great and being from the Philly area I have mad love for bhop.

Man I remember reading Sports Illustrated back in the early or mid 90’s and they had a RJJ feature talking about how he does cockfighting , was raised on a farm, were saying he’s the best pound for pound in the world, and him saying he could beat Mike Tyson. I was like “who tf is this dude?”. Then I saw his fight and understood.

At 4:30 he almost says Terrance Crawford. Does Ward see Crawford like a Tarver because Crawford is chasing Spence the same way.

B Hops got help from the referee by being allowed to continually headbutt Trinidad everytime Trinidad was starting to get momentum. Followed up with hug/grab. Trinidad was swollen on the middle of the head because of it. Plus, B Hops corner made Trinidad wrap his hand with more padding (unconventional/never done before hand wrapping) therefore taking away his power. B Hop was set to win. Philly!....

Remember because of September 11 the Bernard Hopkins vs Felix Trinidad fight was also postponed for a few weeks forcing him to remain at 160ish really took it out of Trinidad. Plus Hopkins went home to train. Felix stood in New York donating his time and money to people suffering due to September 11. Remember Hopkins told reporters his walking around weight was 165lbs. Trinidad had a walking around weight of 185lb. In the fight you can tell Felix was a drained fighter. It was like watching Tyson vs Douglas all over again.

2003 was when Tyson knocked out Eitenne. He weighed 225 for Etienne. A full 10lbs lighter than he did for his previous fight against Lewis. Freddy Roach made Mike work hard in camp. Tyson, as long as he was still relatively light in weight, would have been too fast & powerful Roy, even at that stage. And that’s why Jones turned down $40,000,000.

I don't care if Mike Tyson wasn't quite up to being Tyson if he would have landed that left hook he would have took Roy's head off clean at the shoulders Roy has never been hit as hard as Tyson's hits hell he has never been hit as hard as what Tyson jabs and granted Roy had some speed but don't act like Iron Mike was slow Mike would walk into that ring at 205 and Roy would be carried out at 2:05 first round the only thing Roy would beat is Mixheal Spinks time in the ring against Tyson
@derrickjenkins24555 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Tyson was a legit Heavyweight. He would have retired Roy....then and there.

At middleweight I believe Roy was unbeatable. It was only after he went up in weight, while getting older that he started losing and I think that messed up his legacy.
@Montie-Adkins5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't think Roy had to get on anything. Joe said Roy cut weight to make 175. But really he did what many fighters did, sweated off 5 to 10 pounds. Roy would make 175 at the weigh in, then weigh 185 3 days later on the night of the fight.

Jones should have retired after he beat Tarver the first time. Yes, it was a close fight but he went down by two weight classes and he was starting to get older by that point and still won so he had no obligation to give Tarver another fight after that. Unfortunately, Roy went on for way too long and tarnished his career a little bit by losing fights he never would have lost in his prime, including the B-Hop rematch.

Ward is exactly correct. Jones should have never taken the rematch with Tarver. The first time any fighter tested Roy (other than the first Montell Griffin fight*) was Tarver after Roy lost the weight. Jones won the first Tarver fight by majority decision. The first Tarver fight would have been Jones's 50th career fight. If he retires then, he finishes with a 49-1 record with his loss being avenged with a 1st round knockout in the rematch. Many boxing fans revere Jones, but how much more respect would he have earned if he did not suffer terrible losses during his later years? Compare Jones's first 50 fights to Mayweather's career, which was also 50 fights. Mayweather has supernatural talent, but Mayweather at his absolute best was not better than Jones at his best. * Going into the ninth round of the first Jones-Griffin fight, the scorecards were 77-75, 76-75 for Jones and 76-75 for Griffin. Close and competitive fight.
