Brilliantly put point, and is that due to the totally chaotic nature of the driving system ( the 🌪 tornado) I would think that if you had a monkey typing for close to infinite time he might type some Shakespeare, but then I would argue that system is less chaotic to start with than a tornado. For a start you have a typewriter and an already farely sophisticated life form

That’s not at all how anyone proposes that evolution works. It was never a bunch of random parts coming together like the watchmakers argument. Every living thing on this earth has been crafted through millions of trials and errors, from its most simplest possible base form upward, over several billion years. So to use your analogy, ***if a spark plug was able to self replicate, self-transform, self-assemble, and learn from mistakes and successes, then yes, a spark plug could turn into a Lamborghini in 4 billion years ***edit: Okay I'm editing it. This used to say "if you taught a spark plug" but I changed it to "if a spark plug was able to", because atoms and molecules are able to form complex structures by their very nature, and there is no evidence to the contrary.

I agree with "wesleycardinal" here. Stephen Meyer is a creationism pseudoscience huckster, and goes around continuously promoting his religion-based pseudoscience claims which have been debunked thoroughly and repeatedly for decades - but unlike a lot of his critics, I appreciate it when people like Rogan give interviews like this and let them speak, precisely so we can witness the bogus arguments they use right out of their own mouths. Of course, it would be even better if Rogan were to also interview a professional philosopher and/or a professional scientist who is familiar with the kinds of arguments creationist pseudoscience promoters such as Meyer make, and present them with direct clips of Meyer's statements and have them discuss exactly why those statements are so off-base.

As a programmer I must say that if you randomly change any code, there's a 99.99% chance it breaks, not just degrades. There's no way you can improve any code by randomly typing stuff in random places. The remaining 0.01% chance can't improve anything, your code will still run, but it will have errors like typos and miscalculations

@@harrymills2770 No. God of the gaps argument has so far had a 0% success rate. Every time people say that "God did it" but then our understanding increases and we see that it wasn't a deity who did it. For example once people thought that the Sun was lifted onto a chariot and then the god Ra raced the chariot across the sky. I'm sure that you now know why the Sun moves across the sky and it isn't because of Ra and his chariot. So no. Not falling for the God of the gaps argument takes no faith at all as saying "we don't know" demands zero faith.

I'm old enough to remember when intelligent people were expected to behave this way; and most of them did. No vituperation. No invectives. They ran their arguments past people and saw what they thought of them. We live now with a couple of generations who were taught that anything they said was simply brilliant, that they themselves were brilliant, and that no one had the right to assail either of those brilliances in any way...ever. That "self esteem centric" education has produced at least two generations of dangerously fragile egos and incredibly brittle intellects.

They haven't been given any good perspective on or ability to attribute any sort of objective meaning and value to things. Everything is subjective, whatever feels good, is good. "If I have an idea, it's a good idea because I had it". They can't understand that "equality" does not exist in nature, which we are a part of. There are many ideas, yes, but some are of much greater value and meaning than others. As a theology major, it’s pretty clear that every argument for the existence of god (or arguments disproving those against the existence of god) relies on the idea that infinity is impossible, as infinite regression being impossible is a given in most arguments. I have nothing against religion, however when you boil most arguments for the existence of god down, almost 100% of the time they contradict themselves. but his questions aren't informed as he is not equipped to challenge this creationist's assertions about the claims he makes about evolution. asking "why do you think that?" is great as a first question but then it would be even better to be able to say "why do your claims fly in the face of MOUNTAINS of evidence that has been collected from all around the planet and studied by many many thousands of people also from all over the planet?" How does the fact that countless experimental and observational studies validate and expand upon our knowledge of how evolution works not change your view of how our world works? Because...god? What's wrong with having someone interview this guy who is at least familiar with the claims he's made and is making and who is familiar enough with the field of study to be able to ask an informed question as a followup? That isn't stifling anyone free speech,, it's giving them an opportunity to expand upon their claims. It also gives us as a viewer the opportunity to think, to also question what these so-called experts say. And by so-called experts in this case I am referring to the guest of course, the guy who some are defending because he has a degree in Philosophical Science which, did he get that degree online? This is a great example of how sounding persuasive is more important than being persuasive when convincing people. For example, he mentions that changing a random bit of code, you would expect degradation long before you would expect anything new and useful to arise. But this is not a perfect analogy to what we see in nature, there needs to be one more step: any random change that degrades the code is discarded, much like detrimental mutations that arise in nature. They don't survive, and only beneficial mutations remain. There isn't just one code, there's one version of code in every individual and ones that were randomly degraded will disappear.

This was fleshed out well by Pope Benedict XVI who said that the world has a great 'intelligibility' which corresponds incredibly neatly to the intellectual ability of the human mind. It's certainly an interesting argument. Einstein puts it somewhat more bluntly by saying 'The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible'. Interesting ideas. I'm glad Joe is actually having serious discussions with very clever philosophers about God, rather than just poking fun at straw-men. One doesn't have to agree with the 'other', but certainly we should be charitably engaging in one another's strongest arguments, not poking fun at each other. Great interview Joe.

It's especially interesting to listen to different perspectives that may not necessarily align with views Mr. Rogan himself espouses, because he DOES give them time to explain their view and is also not afraid to counter with his own preconceived notions. It's a nice metaphor with a tornado assembling a car but it is not all accurate. For example a complete human was not "assembled" all at once. Even given the chaotic nature of the "assembly" process, at first some small most basic "parts" were assembled. Then those parts were assembled into slightly bigger and more complex parts and so on. Moreover those parts weren't completely "stupid" and inanimate like car parts. On each level of complexity they had some kind of there own autonomous behaviour and different behaviours among different parts determine how those parts may or may not interact with each other event inside a chaotic tornato. Some parts may never be able to connect while others may attract when close to one another. This factor strongly diminishes the amount of chaos involved. The more complex and defined the elements become, the less chaotic interactions between them. Overall the meraphor of tornado and junk is somewhat shallow and contains logical errors.

If a person believes something, then they are employing some degree of faith. I don’t think it’s admirable to boast of faithlessness, but that’s just me. I think “believers” are disappointed when they can’t “convince” someone to share their faith. Maybe we ought not worry so much about that.

The cell, and how all the components and organelles etc. supposedly emerged, is incomprehensible. There would be no reason, no selective incentive for proto-viruses/viruses/self replicating molecules to become cells, and then there would further be no mechanism to incorporate the structures of the organelles and varied features of more complex cells. It's like a bad joke when this gets discussed at a high level. It basically becomes, "somehow, somewhere, in an ocean of time, each structure of the cell emerged." Simply put, No. Not rational.

People often say, “I’m not hurting anyone so it’s ok to sin (lying, stealing, sexual sins, disrespecting parents etc)” The same God who said to love your neighbour first said to love Him to the best of your ability. If you carry on sinning, then you do not love God but are selfish like the devil so you will be joined to your father in hell or repent of your sins and believe in Jesus as God so Jesus adopts you as His child and you will join Him in Heaven forever.

This is the problem is that some of the concepts of Darwinian natural selection are counterintuitive and conveying them in layman's terms to people that do not understand the complexities of the arguments make it easy to bamboozle people. It inevitably takes the form of a God of the gaps argument. There's no doubt he has a brilliant mind and seems like a personable guy, but his mind, in reality, is made up already. I listened to the whole thing as I was very interested in seeing how this would go given the guest's known convictions. I write this comment after having read a bunch in the hopes that someone on the Rogan team captures significant themes from these comments/responses and Rogan thoughtfully considers them. I realize that I am assuming the theme of "Rogan seemed different and navigated this interview in a way that came of to me, and many others it appears, as having a difficult-to-pin-down negative edge to it" is significant. - I agree that Rogan seemed off and coming from an unusual place in this conversation. - I am not sure I heard Rogan say anything like, "I don't necessarily agree with you, although that is a great point, and a worthy argument" when many of the points seemed to merit that type of acknowledgement regardless of your beliefs or bias or possible animosity. -There seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm to learn and reflect in the moment that Rogan is known for (in my opinion) -It seemed as if Rogan came in expecting to confront someone who was going to proselytize and he didn't get that and so the points he made came of as pre-meditated and scripted and ill-timed. -Meyers explanation of his "Divine interventions and guidance" came off as flat and mundane and were seemingly downplayed by Rogan as "growing up and maturing and simply getting better" to put it my way (although they were in question form). -Recognizing selfishness and moving away from it to selflessness is a big freaking deal and not everyone comes from destitution or horrific (or even mild) trauma and has a redemption story that is universally compelling. That is not "anyone's fault" per se just as being born a crack addict or an alcoholic is not a child's fault (or ever their fault). And that does not diminish the relative impact of one's character defects on their life and the struggle to overcome, and what is necessary for some to overcome them. Are there first world problems - sure. That said, selfishness, regret, shame, fear, guilt and all the rest have trashed many lives that were at one time revered and desired. -Meyer showed openness and tact when Joe went into psychedelics and fertility rituals as the basis for Christianity, and his own experiences with the "other" via psychedelics. Talk about a major curve ball if you are hearing this for the first time. It seemed like an in-your-face challenge born of a kind of snooty defiance. Like, "go ahead, deny the authenticity of my experience". Meyer was open and respectful used a Biblical reference to leave room for this as an avenue to God. -I would have expected the same level of openness and acknowledgment and respect for Meyer's religious experiences and their impact on his life. It is all relative. -Those are just some examples and others have noted more. -It just felt different, especially with Meyers' approach. -It felt like there was a strange and dismissive and antagonistic type of undertone that resulted in leaving a lot on the table. Maybe the topics themselves were not compelling more broadly and Joe was trying to spice it up...and I feel like that is reaching pretty far on my part. -Maybe Meyer pissed Joe off in the run-up...???

If you want to feel security, connection, and confidence in every aspect of your life, then you MUST learn how to solve the conflict/repair cycle because that’s the foundation of it all. This is the principle of the extended phenotype. Point is, nobody is reaching for some weird alternative explanation to avoid what you think is the obvious. Then, as I got older and deep dived into the nature of reality, I really saw the power and beauty of reality, and then god made much more sense as an explanation. Either their are gagillions of universes most of which dont work and we inhabit one that does or something made this. So reality works the way it works because it has to work that way, so whether by chance or by design the dominoes all fall just perfectly from the very tiniest scales all the way to the incomprhensibly large scales. Anyway. I am grateful to exist. I think it is appropriate to tell the chef they made good food, and I hope I get the opportunity to tell god that this existence thing is pretty neat.

And 33 years old and since I was about 11 12 years old I have known of Dr Kent hovind, and relayed some of his teachings from the Bible from a scientific stance to my friends at the time to kind of see what they saw in this world. I knew the stuff I could make sense of was from my growing up in a Bible teaching church and the stuff I didn't understand was from my lack of years on this earth and knowledge there within. What that said I had gained a lot of confidence in the fact that I believed in something that couldn't be shaken to eventually be broken down, and had a fair bit of truth I was believing in. And though Dr Kent hovind has his pretty far out there beliefs on certain things, the things that I really hold true and dear to my heart is the stuff relating to the truth of the almighty God, the one true God, creator whom is here and everywhere and has always been and forever will be. I sense the truth spreading and it comforts my soul. This guy hit it on the nose in this video here from JRE ... God bless.

God is the epitome of Holiness because He is sinlessly perfect, A sinner (liar, sexually immoral, taking the Lord’s Name in vain, thief etc) cannot be in the presence of God or else he will be utterly consumed therefore repent of your sins and put your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Saviour to go to Heaven.

You know you're in trouble when your guest says, "Just hear me out, and a lot of what I am about to say, I outlined in my book "Darwin's Doubt."" This man sounds solid.

we are evolving in how we think about evolution! I really like how he dichotomized the specific aspects of evolution theory that he disagrees with. I have felt the same way but never had the vocabulary to express it.

Meyers does a good job of attacking the unknown gaps in scientific knowledge, bearing in mind this approach is literally filling any knowledge gaps with a presupposition.

Joe is asking questions for people who question everything he’s arguing for them just in case they feel like this man isn’t saying the goods. Atleast thats what I think

I have debated this on occasion, but never as much during this episode.

Rogan is human and has biases, beliefs, etc. He is insecure when his beliefs are challenged even indirectly by Meyer, who is not out to get Rogan. People are like that.
