I'm a bit late to the party here, but am listening to a whole bunch of records from '82, so hopefully have my list ready around the time you guys do 1982 week. As always, keep up the great work! 1. Artist: The Rolling Stones Album: Exile on Main Street Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary:This Rolling Stones album is eminently listenable and probably their best. Much of it has the laid back vibe of what a drugged out recording in a dingy chateau in the Riviera might sound like. Oh wait- that’s what it is! The fact that this doesn’t include as many Greatest Hits type of Stones songs keeps the good vibe going all the way through. Key Track(s): “Loving Cup,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Happy” “Rocks Off,” “Shake Your Hips,” “Sweet Virginia,” “Sweet Black Angel,” “Shine a Light” 2. Artist:Neu! Album:Neu! Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary:This album truly takes music in a new direction and coupled with their second album, represents the finest in krautrock (in my opinion). The songs dare you to take your own twisted dark adventure and never come back. This is the type of music which will make you change the way you think about music. Key Track(s): “Negativland, ”“Hallogallo,” “I’m Glück” 3. Artist: Lou Reed Album: Transformer Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Probably Lou’s best effort outside of The Velvet Underground. Songs gel well and lyrics are thought provoking. Key Track(s): “Vicious,” “Perfect Day,” “Walk on the Wild Side,” “Satellite of Love” 4. Artist: Can Album: Ege Bamyasi Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: Everyone who had tried to turn me on to Can tried with Tago Mago, and until recently, I just couldn’t get into that album. Years later, I gave Can another try and listened to Ege Bamyasi and it all clicked. They bring the unique weird side of psychedelia to the forefront and melt your brain with this one. Key Track(s): “One More Night,” “Vitamin C,” “Sing Swan Song” 5. Artist: David Bowie Album: Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: I think Bowie got way better in the Eno era and I also like the two before this more than this one. But it’s still brilliant and a classic for a reason. You can’t deny the fun factor on this album. Key Track(s): “Suffragette City,” “Moonage Daydream,” “Ziggy Stardust” 6. Artist: Fela Kuti Album: Roforofo Fight Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: Though I had heard some Fela here and there and enjoyed it, it never got me excited in the same way as some of the other music from Nigeria. This was the case of checking out a record completely for this ranking. And I’m glad I did! Now I get all the fuss about Fela Kuti. Not only will it make you dance, the recording quality is just pristine. Key Track(s): “Go Slow,” “Roforofo Fight” 7. Artist:Deep Purple Album: Machine Head Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: This is one of those foundational albums for the hard rock genre and beyond that, it’s a belter in its own right. Each of the players really shines and it’s unlikely you’ve never heard any of these songs out in the wild. Key Track(s): “Highway Star,” “Space Truckin’,” “Smoke on the Water” 8. Artist: Captain Beefheart Album: Clear Spot Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: For some reason, Trout Mask Replica gets all the Beefheart attention. While patience is awarded in spades on that one, it’s really not a good place to start when listening to Beefheart. Listen to this one! Fantastic songwriting which still delivers the syncopated backwards blues you want. Key Track(s): “Big Eyed Beans From Venus,” “Clear Spot,” “Sun Zoom Spark,” “Low Yo Yo Stuff” 9. Artist: Curtis Mayfield Album: Superfly Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary:This has got to be the best soundtrack for a movie I’ve never seen! Curtis just brings a lot of funky r&b with some cool ass high pitched vocals. Every song seems to have its own little short story about the mean streets. Okay, I should actually watch this movie. Key Track(s): “SuperFly,” “Pusherman,” “Freddie’s Dead” 10. Artist: Steely Dan Album:Can’t Buy a Thrill Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: Compared to other Steely Dan, this one skews more classic rock and less jazz. Great songwriting and production. Must have! Key Track(s): “Kings,” “Dirty Work,” “Reelin’ in the Years,” “Do It Again” 11. Artist: The O’Jays Album: Back Stabbers Score:⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Summary: The O’Jays bring the sound of Philadelphia in the best possible way. This album has most of their best songs and with “Love Train” they’re even getting an early start on disco. I saw these guys just a few years ago and they still bring it! Key Track(s): “Back Stabbers,” “992 Arguments,” “Love Train” 12. Artist: The Carpenters Album: A Song For You Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: This one gives you a nice warm recording with love-tinged lyrics in something of a concept album package. This is how pop music should be! Key Track(s): “Road Ode,” “A Song For You” 13. Artist: Cluster Album: Cluster II Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: 1972 was a great year for krautrock. Cluster explores soundscapes of the mind and invites us to bend our minds. This might be the most challenging listen of the top 25, but will eventually make you want to dance. Krautrock beginners need not apply. I hope you are ready for repetition and ambient music. You’re not ready. Key Track(s): “Im Süden,” “Plas” 14. Artist: Scorpions Album: Lonesome Crow Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: The Scorpions debut with a 16-year old Michael Schenker is more what I’m looking for than the europop “Wind of Change” that earned them millions of fans decades later. Key Track(s): “Goin’ Mad,” “Action” 15. Artist: Blue Oyster Cult Album: Blue Oyster Cult Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: While BOC would improve on the formula in the next two albums, there’s a lot to like here. They’re laying down the tracks for what hard rock will become and they’re already dabbling in wonderful surrealistic lyrics. Key Track(s): “Transmaniacon MC,” “Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll,” “Before the Kiss, A Redcap,” “Stairway to the Stars” 16. Artist: Roxy Music Album: Roxy Music Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Roxy Music arrives fully formed on their debut with Brian Eno in the band. Art sophisti-pop. Key Track(s): “Virginia Plain,” “Re-Make/Re-Model,” “Ladytron” 17. Artist: Charles Mingus Album: Let My Children Hear Music Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Another of my discoveries while exploring 1972. Super interesting blend of jazz and classical. This seems like a combustible combo, but it truly works here. Key Track(s): “Adagio Ma Non Troppo,” “Don’t Be Afraid, The Clown’s Afraid Too,” “The Shoes Of The Fisherman’s Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers” 18. Artist: Stevie Wonder Album: Talking Book Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: The hits are really the hits! Stevie actually had another solid album this year (The Music of My Mind), but whereas that one had a foot in the past, this one has a foot in the future. Key Track(s): “Superstition,” “Maybe Your Baby,” “You are the Sunshine of my Life” 19. Artist: T. Rex Album: The Slider Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: T. Rex’s second best album. Very glittery sounding. Some think it’s better than Electric Warrior (I do not). Key Track(s): “The Slider,” “Metal Guru” 20. Artist: Joni Mitchell Album: For the Roses Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: One of the albums I hadn’t heard before this deep dive. Perhaps people sleep on it a bit because it’s very back loaded and follows her most famous album. Joni is in her classic era here with a warm recording and stellar lyrics. Key Track(s): “You Turn Me On I’m a Radio,” “Blonde in the Bleachers” 21. Artist: Nick Drake Album: Pink Moon Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Somehow I always wrote this album off as something I wouldn’t like, and I was thankfully wrong. I’m Not wild about his voice, but I’m warming up to it. Strong lyrics throughout. Also, the shorter runtime makes this an easily digestible folk album. Key Track(s): “Things Behind the Sun,” “Pink Moon,” “Free Ride” 22. Artist: Faust Album: So Far Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Get ready for a healthy amount of krautrock on this list! Not quite as out there as Faust’s first album, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Key Track(s): “Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl,” “Picnic on a Frozen River,” (sequel on IV is better, though) “No Harm,” “So Far” 23. Artist: Neil Young Album: Harvest Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Nothing really challenging about this record, just some wonderful songwriting and easy to enjoy tracks. This is not Neil in his godfather of grunge phase. It’s not my favorite, but I can’t deny how great it is. Key Track(s): “Heart of Gold,” “The Needle and the Damage Done,” “Old Man” 24. Artist: Funkadelic Album: America Eats its Youth Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Somehow I only really knew Maggot Brain and then some of the Parliament-Funkadelic greatest hits stuff, so I never got around to this one. I was missing out. This is funky, but still carries some of the great psych on Maggot Brain. Definitely a transitional record and one to put on for a party. It’s a double record and by the end it lags a bit. Key Track(s): “You Hit the Nail on the Head,” “Loose Booty,” “If You Don’t Like The Effects, Don’t Produce The Cause” 25. Artist: Black Sabbath Album: IV Score: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Summary: Compared to the three earlier albums, this one dips a bit more for me, but hey it’s still Sabbath in their classic era Key Track(s): “Supernaut,” “Snowblind”

Great list Joe and once again throwing in some surprises. You guys have done another great job here with a nice balance of the familiar and the less mainstream. Such a strong year that there are at least another fifty albums that could make the cut. One of mine that didn't make it here is Chick Corea's band Return to Forever with their beautiful debut album. Thanks fellas.

Thoroughly enjoyable week! A very memorable year for me personally. The three picked a number of my favorites, but a greater number that escaped my attention at the time of their release, partly due to my meager discretionary budget in those days. There's enough material here to occupy me for the rest of the year.

Great topic choice and nice changeup for the channel. Really enjoying the discussion of this wider selection of albums. What an Amazing year 1972 was (best ever, perhaps?). There are around 60 albums that year that I consider genuinely great albums. I don't know of any other year that can match that. Thus, even with the top 25 list, many great albums are left off. I waited to hear Joe's list before posting mine, because I figured he would be the only one to show much love for Prog, and yes, he delivered. Anyway, Here's my favorite 25 (at least for right now). 25. The Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn 24. Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees 23. The Kinks - Everybody's in Show Biz 22. The Guess Who - Rockin' 21. Nick Drake - Pink Moon 20. Renaissance - Prologue 19. Van Morrison - St. Dominic's Preview 18. Chicago - V 17. Wishbone Ash - Argus 16. Nektar - A Tab in the Ocean 15. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars 14. Paul Simon - Paul Simon 13. Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything 12. Gentle Giant - Octopus 11. America - Homecoming 10. Neil Young - Harvest 9. Randy Newman - Sail Away 8. Elton John - Honky Chateau 7. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Trilogy 6. Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill 5. Big Star - #1 Record 4. Jackson Browne - Jackson Browne 3. Yes - Close to the Edge 2. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick 1. Genesis - Foxtrot Yes, that's right, no Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, T.Rex, Stevie Wonder, Mott the Hoople, etc. here, who all made great albums, but they were just not among my personal favorites for the year. Two major (and contrasting) themes here: #1 - Progressive rock rules (I have 8 Prog albums in top 25, including the top 3, which are 3 of the greatest prog albums and rock albums of all-time); #2 - So many great singer-songwriters emerging and thriving at this time (I also have 8 singer-songwriter-type albums in top 25), including debut albums from Jackson Browne and Paul Simon, and early career gems from Randy Newman, Elton John, Todd Rundgren, Neil Young, Van Morrison, etc. Note: I did not consider Live albums for my list (there were a few that may have made it, including The Band-Rock of Ages, The Guess Who-Live at the Paramount, and Procol Harum-Live in Concert), as there were just too many great studio albums to have to consider live albums as well.

This is such a great new concept, really enjoy it. And 1972 is a fantastic year for music. When I first heard Jason’s list I thought it was great (and still do) even though I missed the prog. I especially appreciated the inclusion of the Colin Blunstone album. It’s fantastic, and his first is even better. Then Kramzer’s list included a could of great prog albums like Thick as a Brick and Close to the Edge, and Made in Japan which may be the best live album ever. And then Joe comes along and gives som love to Sandy Denny and includes Foxtrot and Octopus which are among my favourite prog records ( but Supper’s Ready actually is the best prog epic ever, Joe). It all goes to show how incredibly stacked the early 70s are. Lolling forward to more deep dives like these

@ihavenoquarrelwithyou32492 жыл бұрын
The solo format and deep diving into a single year have given all three of you a chance to shine. And the most surprise from Joe who away from the Top 5 format shows some unexpected opinions. The Band - Rock Of Ages Truly one of the great live albums. Full credit to Allan Toussaint's horns and arrangement and Garth Hudson's keyboards. They both carry a lot of the weight. Big Star - Number 1 Record The finest release from Big Star and Jason is correct. The loss of Chris Bell hurt the subsequent albums. Can - Ege Bamyasi Following up on the impeccable Tago Mago was always going to be challenging. And while this doesn't reach those heights it is a worthy successor. The longest track is barely over 10 minutes! Are they even trying? Captain Beefheart - The Spotlight Kid Captain Beefheart - Clear Spot One of four acts to make two great albums in 1972. Unsurprisingly neither of these make a showing on anybody's video lists. Yet neither of these albums demands as much from the listener as their earlier releases. Clear Spot suffers from john French's absence but is still nowhere near the failure of the following two albums. Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come One of three soundtracks to make my 1972 list. 5 songs by Jimmy Cliff as the star of the movie he gets the whole album credited to him. But he is ably supported by The Melodians, The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, etc. Nick Drake - Pink Moon After the addition of accompanists on Bryter Layter, Pink Moon is a stripped-back affair and it makes sit all the more powerful. Aretha Franklin - Young Gifted & Black Aretha Franklin - Amazing Grace The studio album made all three lists I believe, but I am very surprised at the lack of Amazing Grace. A tour de force that has been made even more transcendent with the film of the two shows finally seeing the light of day. Marvin Gaye - Trouble Man Squeezed between What's Going On and Let's Get it On, the Trouble Man soundtrack can be overlooked, which is a mistake. Al Green - Let’s Stay Together Al Green - I’m Still in Love With You Aided by Willie Mitchell and his Hi Studios, Al Green released not one but two classic albums in 1972. Both are full of some of Green's best-loved songs. His version of The Bee Gees, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart is a definitive version. Elton John - Honky Chateau Quality albums were flowing out from Elton John/Bernie Taupin, in fact so many that this is an often overlooked gem. Curtis Mayfield - Superfly Known for its two massive hits, this soundtrack, is funk with a true social conscience. Joni Mitchell - For The Roses The second in Joni's four album run of classics. A transitional collection that points the way to the more pop-oriented Court & Spark. Van Morrison - St Dominic’s Preview Second only to Astral Weeks in The lengthy Van Morrison discography. Listen To The Lion may be Van's best song. Randy Newman - Sail Away Pointed social commentary where Randy inhabits and almost sympathizes with his often damaged protagonists. That approach would be taken to its extreme on Good Old Boys, but it's never better than on Sail Away. Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St It is hard to dispute Kram & Joe's love for this album. But it feels sold short to be taken as just "a rock and roll record that sounds like rock and roll" Did rock and roll ever sound quite like this before Exile? Roxy Music - Roxy Music An impeccable debut that sounds both of its time and from some yet-to-be-charted future. Paul Simon - Paul Simon The follow-up There Goes Rhymn' Simon is better, but this is a great step away from the mawkish offerings of his previous duo. Steely Dan - Can’t Buy A Thrill l can't say anything that the great commentators on TLM have said. An amazing debut. Bobby Womack - Understanding The early 70s were so full of male and female soul funk legends that it is easy to forget just how good they were. There are a couple of ridiculous songs here (Harry Hippy, Sweet Caroline) but Womack's genius transcends the material. Stevie Wonder - Music Of My Mind Stevie Wonder - Talking Book One two-punch from all-grown-up Stevie Wonder. Gaye's What's Going On kicked the door in allowing Wonder to be appreciated and start his amazing adult journey. Townes Van Zandt - The Late Great Townes Van Zandt No room for Townes in all your country picks? A huge talent that never could get out of his own way.

Even though I only rate the Pure Prairie League at 3,5 stars myself, I highly recommend it to anyone who likes the genre more than I do - it is surely one of the best in that soft country rock pop yacht category. Sandy is her best solo album...the sad truth is that for many reasons (in her biography) she never achieved the masterwork that so many had hoped for. This album is as close as she came which is still more than the majority of artists ever reach. For everyone interested in her, I would recommend the compilation No More Sad Refrains that also includes the highlights of her work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay and The Bunch apart from her best solo tunes.

Next year when you do 1973, I hope the similarly structured Passion Play ranks equally high. Never a Dull Moment is a very good album that had the bad luck to follow one of the all-time great albums (Every Picture Tells a Story). But it stands up very well today, especially the killer guitar chords on Angel. I have very pleasant memories of the heavy radio airplay of "Isn't Life Strange" from Seventh Sojourn in 1972.

And the way I would understand "Top Album" is to also include longevity, influence, power in my rating. You guys covered the great ones. I would have most of same names. probably would have "Superfly" by Curtis Mayfield, "Trouble Man" by Marvin Gaye, and "Neu" by Neu in there. But 'Exile" all the way.

Most surprised to see 'Transformer' on Joe's list, most curious to see 'Sandy', an obscure title to me from an artist I know best from her one-track collaboration with Led Zeppelin. 'Honky Château' and 'Talking Book' are two of my 1972 essentials, and I liked the nods here to the Carpenters and Pure Prairie League, exemplary of the softer, gentler sounds that were just as vital for this period as the harder rock now-classic numbers.

Joe, the man of the people. He out of the three TLM members is the one I tend to gravitate more in terms of musical taste. My top 10 would be (too lazy to do 25 and I'm not an expert on this year compared to the year before and after) 1. Exile on Main St (Rolling Stones) 2. Machine Head (Deep Purple) 3. Harvest (Neil Young) 4. Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) 5. The Slider (T. Rex) 6. #1 Record (Big Star) 7. Vol 4 (Black Sabbath) 8. Paul Simon (Paul Simon) 9. You Don't Mess Around With Jim (Jim Croce) 10. Talking Book (Stevie Wonder)

Premiata Forneria Marconi - Per un Amico 7. The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers (I do this with albums released long after they were recorded, like The Beach Boys Smile and Big Star Third) 6. Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything? 5. Five + stars (top 100 all-time) - Stevie Wonder - Talking Book 4. Nick Drake - Pink Moon 3. Yes - Close to the Edge 2. @@TastesLikeMusic I clearly disagree with you three in that I firmly believe Big Star get better as they go. They probably would have been even better had Chris Bell stuck around, though - it wasn't an addition by subtraction thing necessarily. In any event, #1 Record was a 4.5 stars beginning. Three excellent albums. Of course, for me, Nick Drake's three are even better. The Band That Shall Not Be Named in Front of Joe is still my greatest pound-for-pound artist due to having just two studio albums, but Nick comes right after that for me.

@@TastesLikeMusic I'm also the opposite of you in that, for me, Foxtrot is made by "Watcher" and "Supper's Ready" and I find the other four tracks quite a bit weaker. Still glad it made your list in any event. Also, I'm not on board with the "they get better" thing in that I would rank Nursery Cryme higher than Foxtrot, although still just below the next two albums. The first two Phil-leds are five and six for me.

Finally, I redid my best albums yearly database a few years ago from scratch, and somehow the Gentle Giant albums got left out. Octopus is a quite high four star honorable mention - which means that '72 is now tied with 1970 for me as the deepest four-star-plus year for me ever, and will surely surpass it assuming that I give Bored Civilians and Ennismore four stars or more on repeated listenings.

I had to look up my notes about that album...yes, it is their best in my book (3,5 stars) saying "Side A would make this a classic but sadly side B gets pretty weak after the first two tracks. Still, they reached a peak that Poco or Eagles never even saw from a distance." (For a soft country rock album this is pretty good given that I have little love for what later was called yacht rock...)

I thought about doing my own Top 25 but since there are quite many albums you already mentioned that would figure on my. I decided to rank 17 albums that wasn't on either Jasons, Kramzers nor Joes list. I rank them in "Decent", "Albums I really like" and "Albums I would put on my Top 25 no matter what". "Decent": 17. Got to Be There - Michael Jackson Yes, he was young and there are quite many covers on it. Though still a fun listen. I wouldn't rank young Michael Jackson nor The Jacksons/Jackson 5 amongst Motowns most important work.. But it is cheerful and puts me in a good mood. 16. I'm Still in Love with You - Al Green Just a very pleasant album. Far from all the more gritty early 70's soul albums. Great production and a warm sound. 15. School's Out - Alice Cooper Perhaps the most iconic Alice Cooper song as the title-track but a rather strange album. Not an easy album to get into but quite interesting nonetheless. 14. Trouble Man - Marvin Gaye Perhaps the most anti-Marvin Gaye album he ever did. Doesn't sound like anything else in his catalog. Quite dark and surprisingly little vocals. Should be experienced in a certain darker mood. 13. Lonesome Crow - Scorpions Their first album and it's so far from ALL the big hits. This is something else and has a cult-following. I saw someone rank this as their best as late as today. 12. Shades of a Blue Orphanage - Thin Lizzy Often ranked as one the bands weaker moments. I wasn't thrilled with it on the first, second or even third listen either. With time it has grown on me though. I would say it's more misunderstood than anything else. "Albums I really like": 11. Squawk - Budgie Like many bands. These guys' first handful are considered their classics. I get the impression that this is the least ranked amongst the classic bunch. Maybe so. Still an entertaining and rocking album. 10. The Magician's Birthday - Uriah Heep Some of the band's best tracks and some rather forgettable. 9. Trilogy - Emerson, Lake and Powell Perhaps their most accessible album? You don't need to be a prognerd to enjoy it! 8. Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond A classic debuts in some circles. Many hold it as one of the best albums of the 1970's. I like it but haven't heard it enough to rate it on such a high level. Maybe in time! 7. Saint Dominic's Preview - Van Morrison All the shorter songs would fit fine on a Greatest Hits record. The trouble is the longer songs. I don't really get those. I don't hate them, I don't like them and I don't love them. They are just sort of there and drags the album down. 6. Jeff Beck Group - Jeff Beck Group Unpopular opinion: My favorite album of the four from Jeff Beck Group. "Albums I would put on my Top 25 no matter what": 5. Paul Simon - Paul Simon How do you go on after Simon & Garfunkel at their peak? Change direction enough and make a fun and light album. 4. Demon and Wizards - Uriah Heep Often hailed as their best album and I think it is.. Very cohesive. Not my favorite by them but a classic! 3. Super Fly - Curtis Mayfield He spent the 60's with The Impressions and like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and others made a very fruitful career later on. To have a soundtrack as his perhaps greatest album is a bit strange... But what a soundtrack! 2. Blue Öyster Cult - Blue Öyster Cult Spooky, different, odd and just a personal favorite. The band would get better in several ways but like a few debuts this caught something specific and I really like it. 1. Argus - Wishbone Ash At this point (year 2022) the band has released 25 albums and yet. This is basically the only one which seemed to reach a bigger audience. Listen to it and hopefully you'll understand why. I love it.

Here is my 3rd package, now in 4 star territory but still pretty high/solid 4 stars given the year...maybe in some other year some of them may have gone to 4,5 stars but my rating for the 70s is very strict. # 44 Flash - Flash 4,0 (Peter Banks and Tony Kaye were essential for the sound of Yes and here is the proof for it. Their second album of the year, In the Can is my #145) # 45 Fela Kuti - Roforofo Fight 4,0 (There is still some James Brown influence on this early album and he would get even more radical in later years, anyway, his 1972 album put afrobeat on the musical map.) # 46 Birth Control - Hoodoo Man 4,0 (I gave Gamma Ray already some mention in the SOTY series but anyone into Deep Purple MK II will feel at home with this band. Again a German band not playing krautrock.) # 51 Soft Machine - Fifth 4,0 (With Robert Wyatt out and Mike Radledge the only founding member remaining after five albums, the band has evolved - progressed - far from their roots but still were unmistakably Canterbury's main representative. The album was their weakest so far but at their high level this still is excellent.) # 52 Ian Carr - Belladonna 4,0 (His suberb band Nucleus had just lost some key members to Soft Machine - see #51 above - so this was released under his own name and the trumpeter is joined by some musicians that would again move to Soft Machine in a while...) # 55 Amon Düül II - Wolf City 4,0 (This is the fifth and last of the great classic albums from the krautrock pioneers but still very good. The LP side long jams make way for shorter tunes, harder rocking than before - this may be their most accessible album that still captures the original spirit of the band.) # 56 Brinsley Schwarz - Nervous on the Road 4,0 (Their forth album and by now they moved from British country rock to what would be labelled pub rock in a while. The album establishes Nick Lowe as a substantial writer and the band as a powerhouse ready to back up Graham Parker under the Rumour name.) # 58 Bo Hansson - Lord of the Rings 4,0 (Originally released locally with a Swedish title and Swedish track names, the album appeared on the Charisma label in 1972 and found the right audience there. The progressive, folk-inspired, organ/moog led tunes were paving the way for bands like Camel. Great melodic stuff and never pretentious. Remember that the whole Lord of the Rings hype was still decades in the future back then.) # 61 Randy California - Kapt Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds 4,0 (After four fabulous albums, west coast legend Spirit broke up when Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes started Jo Jo Gunne. Hendrix friend guitarist Randy California teamed with Noel Redding - under a moniker - for this unique solo album. Psychedelic fuzz-drenched hard rock that includes Paul Simon and Beatles covers - Hendrix did that as well - but also originals like the unforgettable Downer. The Black Keys paid close attention.) # 65 Allen Toussaint - Life, Love and Faith 4,0 (New Orleans legend as a songwriter and producer but it is still hard to find a really good album of him as performer. Victims of the Darkness or On Your Way Down alone are worth to have this album.)

Yes yes YES, so glad to see the Moodies make it with Seventh Sojourn! I'm a young(er) MB fan (born in the late 80s), but love digging back into the decade before. Got a love/hate relationship with them as a band - their blend of folk, psychedelic rock and soul prog rock and electronic music can sometimes seem a bit too "grey', muddy and wayward - but when they get it right, they really get it right. And they nail it on Seventh Sojourn. The track Kramzer is after is 'New Horizons' - Justin Hayward is a superb singer songwriter and the track is so beautifully evocative. You're right that there's no a single dud on the record. Ps. I think Paul Simon s/t should have crept in there somewhere. Other than that, love this list!

Totally agree w/your assessment of "Alabama." It was in my top 10 Neil Young songs. You can say the same thing about "Out On the Weekend" or "Words." Then again, you can say it about virtually every song on the album. Damn. Pretty difficult to pick five more albums from Joe's list because of the many overlaps ofcourse. I had to replace Big Star on Kramzer's list by T Rex (don't know the entire album but I really love the singles). Below I will add five picks of my own that weren't mentioned by the three protagonists. I have to admit that I don't have many albums of 1972 in my collection. It's a bit of a "lesser" year. JOE: Gentle Giant / Big Star / Jethro Tull / Elton John / Steely Dan KRAMZER : Stevie Wonder / Lou Reed / Yes / T Rex / Rolling Stones JASON : Roxy Music / Neil Young / Randy Newman / Deep Purple / David Bowie * The J. Geils Band - Full House One of the most underrated American bands in America. They were use in the Boston and Detroit era but they never crossed over to the rest of America. They did cross over to Europe (where I live in little Belgium) with their 1981 album Freeze Frame. The title track was the first song I ever recorded on cassette. I dived into their whole back catalogue and they became one of my all time favourite bands. Their firs two albums consist half of covers and half of original material. They were good players but still looking for their sound. Their third album was the live album Full House that compiled the best tracks of their first two albums in blowing live perfomances. One of the most energetic live albums I know. * Focus - Focus 3 Staying true to a band from neighbour country The Netherlands. With guitarist Jan Akkerman and flutist Thijs van Leer. And with Sylvia and House Of The King as local prog "hits". * Paul Simon - Paul Simon His first solo album with classic tunes like Mother and Child Reunion, Duncan and Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard. Can't believe nobody picked or mentioned it. * Townes Van Zandt - The Late Great Townes Van Zandt This is an artist I would definitely hear your opinions about in a ranking show. The lonesome cowboy with his heartfelt lyrics about mourning and grief. Personal favourites include Snow Don't Fall, Pancho And Lefty and the gorgeous If You Needed Me. I almost start crying by writing the titels down. So much beauty and consolation in his work. Give him a chance. * Jacques Brel - Jacques Brel Let's do the most famous Belgian artist with. On this album he covers some of his best known songs with more stripped bare piano arrangements: Ne Me Quitte Pas (his most famour composition), Marieke, Le Moribond (that became Seasons In The Sun when Terry Jacks covered it) and La Valse A Mille Temps.

My top 5 of Joe's 25 1 Harvest - Neil Young. All songs are good great. Maybe I hardly listened to "there's a world" but it's pretty good too. Goldrush too has all good to great songs. The best on Goldrush is 1 "When You Dance I can really love / 2 Birds / 3 After the Goldrush / 4 And Don't Let it bring you Down. Also love the endings of side 1 & 2 with "When the Morning Comes and "Cripple Creek Ferry 2 Ziggy Stardust - Bowie. I am not into glam rock much but this great record overcomes the limitations it has for me. There is not a bad song but I don't get the love that "Rock and Roll Suicide" receives. On glam rock: Other than the songs themselves, which is mostly the case, it's often image over substance; visual impact over music with mawkish, trite lyrics for teenagers. 3. #1 Record - Big Star 4 Something/Anything - Todd Rundgren Very uneven as Joe said. 5 Never a Dull Moment - Rod Stewart You Wear it Well and Hendrix's Angel - great songs. HM: Can't Buy a Thrill - Steely Dan. Sandy - Sandy Dennis and Yes - Close to the Edge

Top 10 for 72 1. Clube Da Esquina - Milton Nascimento/ Lo Borges 2. Ziggy Stardust - Bowie 3. Something/Anything? - Todd Rundgren 4. A Song For You - Carpenters 5. Close To The Edge - Yes 6. Pink Moon - Nick Drake 7. #1 Record - Big Star 8. Transformer - Lou Reed 9. Return To Forever - Chick Corea 10. Exile On Main Street - Rolling Stones

Great to see Joe get his say - this will be interesting - I will be reacting in real time to this viewing. 25 With The Raspberries pick, is Joe mirroring Jason here? 24 One that Jason hates !!! Octopus by Gentle Giant - the first prog pick - never heard it 23 Lou Reed's Transformer - glad you liked it but it's a bit low to me - MY NUMBER 2 22 Carpenters A Song For You - interesting pick! Goodbye to Love - my song of the year! - hope to see it make an appearance in Joe's songs of the year 21 Ojays Backstabbers - liked the single - never saw them as an album band really Like Jason's comment of picking the Carpenters over Lou Reed but, to me, song-wise, Goodbye To Love nails it like nothing from Transformer but Lou's album is better for sure 20 Bustin Out Pure Prairie League - never heard it 19 Young Gifted and Black Aretha Franklin - well argued Joe with all those killer contributors 18 Big Star - a unique sounding album - indeed, like a pre-punk record. MY NUMBER 4 17 Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything - too weird? It's in my top 5 - I know what you mean about Song of The Viking but I think it just adds to the colour and makes the souldful ballads stand out - MY NUMBER 3 16 Thick As A Brick - predictable prog pick Interesting comment from Kram about Joe trying to please everybody rather than picking his favourites but I agree, Joe, there is a lot of diversity in this era and you're right - it's all so good! 15 Moody Blues Seventh Sojourn - interesting take on what I would consider a totally irrelevant out dated prog record (even for 1972) 14 Rod Stewart Never A Dull Moment - good to see. It may not be perfect but like you say with Ronnie Wood and Rod's personality, it's ramshackle and charming 13 Genesis Foxtrot - a renowned album but so much for me is verging on inaccessible even for a musician like me - you feel like you're listening to a jam and saying hello, I'm a listener, do you care about us at all? 12 Exile on Main Street - a band strutting at the top of their game but surprised to see it so low for you 11 Honky Chateau - again surprisingly low for you - MY NUMBER 9 10 For The Roses - good to see it here, as Kram said, often forgotten, MY NUMBER 15 9 Machine Head - Highway Star is so good it gets MY NUMBER 13 comfortably 8 Music of My Mind - not a surprise Joe, no - MY NUMBER 20 7 Volume 4 Black Sabbath - I didn't considered it and maybe due a re-listen as you all picked it 6 Sandy from Sandy Denny - what a curveball and worth a re-listen 5 Can't Buy A Thrill - agree agree agree! MY NUMBER 5 TOO. 4 Harvest - a solid album but certainly underwhelming compared to After The Goldrush - it's my NUMBER 10. I Like your observation about country influencing the rock - spot-on. 3 Bowie - Ziggy Stardust - Bowie's peak but why number 3? MY NUMBER 1 comfortably 2 Close To The Edge ???? Above Bowie??? The musicianship is undeniable but the relevance? Not for me. 1 Talking Book - good pick. Innervisions is better for me but this is his peak period. MY NUMBER 7 The score for me is 12 on Jason's list, 13 on Kram's list and 10 of Joe's. It's the prog which brings Joe's list down for me. The musicianship in this era generally is a revelation to modern ears but as a child of the punk/new-wave era, I struggle to see the relevance of a lot of 70s prog. Even at the time, the likes of ELP were legendary in their self-indulgence. Rush and Pink Floyd and later Genesis stands out from this era. The rest are a mixed bag. Look forward to the songs - Jason has 4 of my 25, Kram 6

To reiterate, I don’t know or care much about music in ‘72, but here are some notable albums from this year that failed to make any of the 3 lists: Can - Ege Bamyasi (19th on Pitchfork’s 70s list and top 5 on RYM) NEU! - NEU! (25th according to PF) Miles Davis - On the Corner (not really surprising in this case) Milton Nascimento & Los Burgos - Clube da Esquina (probably the most acclaimed foreign album of 1972 online) Novod Baianos - Acabou Chorare Charles Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music Wishbone Ash - Argus (apparently this is regarded as proto-Iron Maiden, so I thought Joe might sneak it on his list) Glad that Big Star and Black Sabbath made it onto all 3 lists. Never cared much for Bowie or Elton John except in a “greatest hits”-type of format.
