Yeah man people focus on his soloing, but to me, EVH was a rhythm player. His chord voicings, when in perfect tune, sound huge. And he played LOUD.
@mikesteelheart6 ай бұрын
His solos were extremely rhythmic too even though it often seems like he's just playing sporadic flashy bursts. But yes his riffs were legendary and completely his own...

Eddie's guitar playing in the late '70's and into the '80's compelled me to get back to electrified guitar playing in my early 20's after almost 10 years away from it & I am so glad he did, I'm 65 and still playing!

The difference between EVH and all the technical wizards out there was his ultra rare gift of making his parts fit the song. Knowing when not to shred is something that very few players can do.

Exactly, he'd fit those flashy bursts into such a tight window and once something became redundant he'd break it up by transitioning to something else.

Its something i have learned in my almost 40 years of playing guitar. I had guitar lessons in the mid 1980's and my guitar teacher asked me what my musical goals was were. Like, where i saw myself in 10 years: playing rock in a cover band or original band or playing orchestras, quartetes (sp?) Etc. I told him i wanted to play rock in local band like van halen did. So, he taught me how to play using my ear as well as learning how to understand tabliture. Any way, i was taught how to use my ear and to this day, i can hear something and figure out how to play it. I had no musical theory training or understanding. I was taught that this is how most of the grreat bands were. Like, the beatles. They just would jam up a riff that sounded cool and build on it untik a song was created. I say all of that to say this. There is a spot in this comment by satch where he says: EVH would play something that didnt make sense musically but it sounded cool. And that is my point. I think a lot of times, by learning music theory, you can miss out on cool sounding licks, solos, etc because it doesnt seem kosher because the theory you were trained by tells you that certain riffs, turn arounds, key changes, etc. Dont make sense. I would love to know how many VH, zeppelin or beatles songs....to only name a few bands who played by ear vs playing using theory....i would love to know how many of our favorite songs shouldnt exist because they go against real music theory. I actually was at a party one time in the late 80's and the guy who house we were partying at broke out the guitar and we were all passing it around...im sure you all been there to play n pass kind of guitar circle. Well this one guy was a music major in college and he was criticizing everyone that played "original riffs" he would say " you cant play that!! A G# minor cant be played after that, it makes no sense...meawhile, it was a cool sounding riff and this guy's music theory training said otherwise. Im glad i learned to play by ear and just have fun. Music theory is an alien language to me. (Which is prob why i switched from guitar to bass early on) i could never solo and didnt understand circle of 5ths, modes, scales and how to incorporate a solo. I know that you can solo whether you know theory or not. Another story is that i was in an original band in the mid 1990's and my dads friend had a son who played violin in an orchestra. We were recording a demo in a studio and our ecclectic singer wanted to add a string instrument to one of the break downs in our song. So we brought the guy to our studio. He brought his $10,000 violin with him and he broke it out and asked me for sheet music for our song. I know in the real world, this is how things are done But we were just a rock band, all trained by ear. So i told him we didnt have any, and he looked confused. I told him to just listen to the song and just riff or jam something. There was no age gap or anything. The guy was our age, he listened to our type of music, which, at the time, was Pearl Jam, STP, AIC, Nirvana, Sound Garden, etc. So, im sure the guy had to kinda understand what we were feeling or what we thought would sound cool. He just kinda sat there looking confused. My guitar player asked him to just play something, anything, like a scale, a run, so he started looking thru his case and his backpack for sheet music to anything. I said, "bud, dont you have anything in your memory that you can play, maybe we can give you direction off of that and we can build from there?" He still couldnt play anything. His world was alien to us and ours to his. I dont know if it was just him or his training only allowed him to play off of sheet music. We never captured anything, it was a waste of time but it hit me and i was so happy that i wasnt trained like that. I mean, even if i was trained that way, im sure that i would still jam on my violin and play along to something in my music collection. Ill never forget that night.

Been there. In studio. Dude did commercials. To sum it up, imo, no soul

@@pjotts9793 I would agree I play by ear I am pretty fluent with theory too , but if it sounds good it is good , I have jammed with theory technical guitarists and must can’t just come up with a riff or a groove to follow or solo too because they don’t have any music to read from ,, it’s ridiculous ,, yes ear training is a must for musicians so that they are not limited by just playing by what should work ie 1,4,5 chords etc . Just play guitar 🎸

Nobody beats the selection, the volume of song(s)/ album OPTIONS to choose from - and reliable results- some with chills. Since early 1980s my instrumental go to. I love some Yes, BOC ...but my 99.75% go to for EARGASM- Dr JOE SATRIANI & the great worx he & the various tune travellers mustered up along the way... plenty relish already. He has some great prodigy on strings as most reading this might know AND NOW U KNOW- his son ZZ S. makes a some awesome videos / graphics. I only found Pumpin' June 6th 2024. Kudos to the kiddo! I was fortunate enough to see Van Halen in Louisville 5or 6 times. The first one was the 1980 invasion tour in the last one was when 5150 came out. The concerts were great but there were a few of them. I think 1984 or I got up close it was still general admission… and I got to see the guitar solo from about 10 feet away… I’m 60 years old and I still think about that all the time how great that was and how good it felt to be that close. It made me play the guitar. It’s still with me.
