You know it's interesting how much more sounds of hot then cold there are recorded. If you've never heard a body of water bending and roaring like thunder. Go to a cold place and hear it. Nothing like it. I do love the sound of heat though.

Yes. Alan Lomax and his associates are some of the most important historians of our time, and the fact that they run a KZbin channel, it's a blessing to all of us. This music changed the course of my life

Just as white Appalachian music can be traced totally to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales I'm wondering if anyone has done work tracing this music back to Africa. Or perhaps it is an entirely new music itself.

Field holler came from westafrican tradition where itinerant singer travelled the country singing good and bad news. Very old tradition still happenning nowadays. But the suffering from slavery and the english language made it also entirely new

White appalachian music can't be totally traced to the nations of the British Isles. There's a huge component of African influence in the very way the notes are carried. The banjo is physical evidence of this. It's the very difference between Australian folk music and American. If nothing else, the existence of the mountain dulcimer implies some germanic influence.

I recently uploaded a KZbin video tracing Appalachian music back to Africa... but unfortunately it has been removed for copyright reasons. Hopefully it will be up again soon, so keep an eye on my channel! Here is some "bluesy" African music: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIKxo39tataBha8 This is the African predecessor of the banjo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n53QdqGJa52kgMk

Sorry to have implied that white Appalachian music was descended solely from the British Isles. It was a large generalization on my part. There are certainly clear call backs to African and other origins. As an aside the bouzouki often used in traditional Irish music circles has a fairly recent history related to Greece first but apparently influenced by American banjo.
