Been watching this for 15 years at this point. If I drink liquor I immediately want to listen to funkiest delta blues for hours

First time I heard this I thought I was hearing 27mm open ended spanner rattling away. But now after a few more listens, I reckon its more like a 29mm.

I recently learned that Alan is responsible for audio field recordings of the folk music from my region. He met Nova Scotia's Helen Creighton and loaned her a recording machine and she captured Northeast folk music in the 1940s. I grew up with Lomax music. His 1941-2 Mississippi collection of Son House, Willie Brown and Muddy Waters are possibly the greatest of all Delta Blues recordings.

Does anyone one know when this was filmed? I know it was made available in ‘66 but Bukka and Wolf look younger than that would imply. Or it could be my old man memory working poorly again 😅

I have gravestone rubbings on the my wall from Jack's grave and his mentor Henry Stuckey (who also taught Skip James) sent to me by DeWayne Moore of the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund that funds tombstones for blues musicians. Rest in Power, blues geniuses Jack Owens and Bud Spires.

Now this takes me home. I dont do church no more but when I revisit songs like these, it gives me that soulful connection to my folk and our struggles. I'm 46, and I grew up in a little town in central Kentucky. My church was a small church that my great-great grandfather, who was born in 1857, was a founding member of. I attended with my great grandparents and my several generations of our family. To me, there ain't nothing better than to hear these ol' songs without music, the toe tappin guiding the flow of the voices, the elders hummin or moanin all while they creating with perfect imperfections. LawdHaveMercy!

This video is such a treasure and we cannot thank Alan Lomax posthumously enough (who doesn´t even dare to breathe at the beginning, while holding the microphone) for this little video. As many commented Clarence Ashley was "conducting", but he also was sometimes looking around mischievously, when the lyrics make a "turn" so he audience is attentive to what is coming next in the song. Little details, but it shows that Ashley knew how to keep his audience interested. In addition, he was accompanied by excellent musicians who make this actually simple song a true gem.

Bless my older black chorus instructor for loving gospel, and making me sing it. Even more for teaching me alto, and being a hardass about it for my maturing voice! I'm agnostic, but these songs are always so empowering. I loved having the opportunity to belt this out on stage! We human beings are capable of creating music for only self-expression and pleasure. We're so lucky to live this way! _Amen!_
