Dear JD Vance, 50 years ago my suburban integrated high school in Los Angeles was open from morning till after night school every school day. This sort of thing didn't happen back then. We only had one security officer on campus, and he didn't wear a uniform. He was there to make sure some kid wasn't selling pot. Schools should NOT be prisons. Schools don't have to be prisons. Legislators in Congress are elected to listen to and promote the change that their constituents demand. In Norway, we have never had ANY school shootings, ever. Even our police are not armed on the daily. What we do have though, is a very strict gun law. Hunters can own rifles (they have to have a license, and the rifle has to be locked up) No one can just buy a gun/rifle in Norway. Kids walk alone to school, no one is being kidnapped or killed. Schools are open, no need for locks or gates.

When I was a child, school shootings weren’t a fact of life. We never had an active shooter drill until after Columbine because a school shooting was almost unheard of before that. Vance talks like gun violence in schools is inevitable and unpreventable, like a tornado or an earthquake, but he’s old enough to know better.
